Netflix has "ReMastered - Devil at the Crossroads - a Robert Johnson story". I thought it was really good.

It’s really good. They go a bit hard on the ‘hoodoo’ stuff but it’s still great!

Jeremy, here’s link to a deeper documentary about Robert Johnson called Can’t you hear the wind howl here on you tube. czcams.com/video/rGIIZx72Gf0/video.html
A lot of the footage from the Netflix one is pulled from this documentary. It’s an older doc so some of its dated but still worth a watch. Cheers!

Agree with you regarding the, Hill Country documentary. There is an earlier documentary by Fat Possom! It's Bad you Know, The Blues according to Fat Possom Records. Sure you've watched that one as well, Martyn. The Pursuit of Tone, Buddy Guy, is another good watch.

Hi Martyn. With all due respect i feel you missed the best three in my opinion. Tops , Maxwell street market 1972. second Lightnin Hopkins in 1968. and third, Blues like showers of rain. Three of the purest blues films ever in my opinion. Still have my first Lightnin record bought in 1963. Have some Shreeveport releases from 1968 still in cellophane Three or four Blind Blake. etc, etc. If ever you are around here love you to pop in for a chat. Regards, David.

Glad to have found someone closer to my age that loves the blues and the history of it as much as I do! Your videos are great tributes to the blues.

Les Blank made excellent films on Lightnin Hopkins and Lipscomb.
He documented music and folklife of various Texas and Louisiana communities, some with French and Spanish flavors
Excerpts may be found on CZcams. For the full stories invest in Criterion streaming

Heya Martyn! That is a fine list of Blues documentaries! Two I enjoy are; "Georgia Blues: Blind Willie McTell" and "In Search Of Robert Johnson" narrated and hosted by John Hammond. He interviews Johnny Shines and Honeyboy Edwards!

Five really good blues documentary films. I think I have viewed them all, some multiple times. The hill country one is very special as it shows the depth of blues musicians, musicians that are everyday working folks but wonderful players, writers and singers. Once again, thank you Martin for creating these videos/lessons/stories. Cheers from Ottawa.

Hi Martyn! A very good selection of flicks I'd never heard of, which is very ngood news indeed: a lot to view, hear and to learn about.
I suggest another, older documentary, produced in France in 1972, shot by the Greek director Robert Mantoulis (a political refugee from the dictatorship years in Greece), 'Along the Old Man River'. It's a two-part work, following the route of the blues from the Mississipi delta to Chicago, with Texas penitenciary work singers, footage of Bukka White, Robert Pete Williams, Furry Lewis, Mance Lipscomb, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, BB King, Willie Dixon, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee, with interviews of all these gentlemen about their history in and with the blues. You can hear BB King tell the camera that at one point in his career, 'playing the blues was like being black TWICE'.
It was still recently available on DVD in France. Maybe it's somewhere on the web. To me, it's a must see. I first saw it in the late 70s as a student in a video library, and have never recovered from it ever since.

Thanks for this, I'll definitely be checking them out. Another one that I liked was the Martin Scorsese documentary series called "The Blues". There are 7 episodes, and each one has a different director and point of view.

My favorite (on CZcams at least) is "Georgia Blues: Blind Willie McTell" I love the way they did this documentary, pure content/not much filler. And Blind Willie McTell is incredible of course, but he's not in my top 5 blues artists i don't think, but the documentary is just that good. (Link below:) Thanks for the new video, and list of doc's to check out if i haven't yet.

Thank you, some interesting documentaries to look for!
For people who want to really dig deep into the subject of blues history, I would recommend a series of 12 informal lectures by Adam Gussow - he is a pro harmonica player and teacher and is Professor of Southern Studies in Oxford, Mississippi. They are all on CZcams. His books are also very informative.
