The fishes' wariness of feeding at the surface is most likely due to their place below birds in the food chain. Man has done a lot to ruin the natural order but I don't think we're to blame for fish epigenetics. Just to put your mind at ease. 😊
Meanwhile koi fish: (gulps large spoon)
At the Monterey Bay Aquariums roof tank, they put stands of silver wire over the water surface. It was a fairly loose random pattern, not a net, just random almost ornate strands.
The reflection of the strands (or something) messes with birds and makes them avoid the tank. It's bizarrely effective. Easy way to keep birds away from a pond or garden area.
This may allow the fish to feed under less stress and avoid predatory losses.

It's Thursday the 25th and never in my life have I been more afraid of a man taking care of his pond of fish
I have a hundred dollars into a fish in my pond, a fish I had to get a license for from Texas Parks & Wildlife before I could buy it. It's a Triploid Grass Carp and algae is it's preferred food. It's been doing a great job keeping my pond clear for several years. No more chemicals or dye needed.

@@jaredhebert942 I have never laid eyes on that fish since the day I released him. The only reason I know the herons didn't get him yet is because the algae is still gone. 😂. My pond is like 100 x 200 and 9 feet deep, so he has plenty of room to hide in.

Louis you should add an above pond jar or tall/large fish tank tower that they can swim up into. Im not sure what the proper name is for them, 👉 (inverted Pond Aquarium) 👈 or floating fish dome... but I've seen installation videos where they are installed with the opening facing the pond a few inches below the waterline resting on corner supports or a large jar mouth ring frame below the water. Then you snake a wet/dry shop vac hose inside the tank & suck out all the air. Its a really cool effect watching the fish swim out of the pond up in the air, It's a real trip watching the big ones✌👍

I can't really talk on his behalf, but I remember a good handful of technical problems. I'd guess he may get back to it, but has to take time and decide and acquire some better gear first. In the meanwhile the plantings added will help with the nutrient cycle and starve out the algae while still providing oxygen, so the water will be a lot clearer by then. I'd think Louis has a plan, we just have to be patient.

We used to have a guy that kept a koi in his city apartment bathtub. He'd come in once a week, buy the most expensive supplies, talk about his fish, how much he liked to watch it while he took a shit, and how it cost him thousands of dollars. He didn't like it when people told him that a bathtub was a terrible place to keep a fish even with constant water changes and treatments. After a few months, it eventually died. He came back to blame the fish's death on the highest quality food pellets we sold. He seemed pretty corporate.

That is an impression pond. In the UK you would have to contend with Heron's stealing the fish. As soon as they get to know the location it is game over, unless you cover it with netting.

My landlord has a cramped shallow square tiled hole in the earth for his fish. No plants, no waterfall, not even a sky over their heads. And the smell, oh the smell
Ok so you see, these fish live in a socialist Market economy, where Louis is the state. Louis guarantees enough food for them all to live, as well as room and oxygen. The fish are the people, who have all of their basic needs met. However, there is still an aspect of market economics, given that how much food a fish will get above it's basic need is up to competition and skill. The most competitive fish will have a bit more than the least, but all of their needs are met.

Louis, you know, I say, what would happen if the boat sank from its weight? And you’re in the boat and you have this tremendously powerful battery and the battery is now underwater and there’s a shark that’s approximately 10 yards over there? Would peaceful co-existence still be possible?
I did not know they made cheese doodles for fish, do they have an underwater movie theater in that pond as well? Can I come hang out with the fish, I'll bring my own cheese doodles :)
You should train these fishes to eat the food directly from your hand. It's a funny feeling to have them eat directly out of your hand and whenever you get close to the pond, they'll start to all move towards you and when you hold your fingers into the water, they'll suck on them which is quite fun.
I grew up with a pond like this in the garden. Most of our fishes had names, too.

When I was getting my horticulture degree I had the opportunity to build/learn pondscaping and I loved it. Using "biofalls" is the best way to go so you're definitely on the right track.

You might want to look into getting a polarizing filter for filming the fishies. You can filter out the surface reflections very effectively with that and it makes the underwater goings-on a lot more clear to see.

Try to find some lily pads for your pond. They provide shade for the fish too. And you can buy fish that feed on algae to help keep it from taking over the pond, like plecostomus.
