  • Check out this interesting comparison between the 2020 Dodge Challenger SXT V6 and the 2020 Dodge Challenger R/T V8. I run through many of the features and differences between these two muscle cars and give my impressions after driving them both. Which is actually better? Let me know what you think.

Coming from someone who's owned both...
I literally just upgraded from an SXT to an RT with the STP a few months ago after having the SXT for about 3 years. Even after getting the V8, I'm still an advocate for the V6 depending on what you want out of it.
The V6 does have a good amount of power for the average daily driver and it looks great. I got so many compliments on the road when I had mine. Gas mileage was great. I used mine for the most part driving 50 miles a day to work. Even still when I stayed off the gas, I'd end up with around 29-30 highway mpg and about 20mpg on the street. I even took it to the track a few times. I will say that from a dig, especially in the 1/8th mile, you'll pull on an RT because the SXT is a few hundred pounds lighter and you hook better but once that V8 torque kicks in, it's gap city. lol. Stock, I has able to hit 14.5 quarter mile with a 5.8 0-60 time with the SXT. When I modded and 91 octane tuned mine(just bolt ons and exhaust), I was at 13.9 quarter mile at 5.2 seconds.
With that said, the 5.7 is much different. First off the exhaust note is just beautiful and the increased torque makes a hell of a difference. It still has a very smooth ride but you don't feel that sort of laggy feel that the V6 has...when you press the gas, you're gone. You don't realize it until you sit behind the wheel of the RT. Alot of the time, I have to feather the pedal otherwise, my wheels chirp from a stop like crazy...which is why I said that the SXT will take an RT from a dig. MPG on the highway is usually around 27 if I'm taking it easy and on the street around 18-20.
My best stock 0-60 was 4.7 seconds. I've taken the RT to the track as well. After adding the Hellcat airbox and high flow filter, exhaust and Hemifever 87 octane tune (because premium is getting expensive), I'm down to 4.4 seconds and with a 13.4 quarter mile.
Sorry for the lengthy post. I hope that anyone debating on getting the 3.6 or the 5.7 reads this. There is a lot of enjoyment to be had from the V6. If it's your first car, first entry into Mopar or just a daily driver you won't be disappointed. Just try not to listen to the dickheads that say the V8 is better JUST because it's a V8. The Hemi is great but everyone might not want that at that point.

I too have a 2013 R/T, base model, Bright White, 6 speed. Bought it new in Nov '12 for $28,500 out the door. It is my "toy". Bought it as a retirement gift to myself. Love it and have no complaints! I don't thrash or abuse it. It has enough power to be fun to drive and I don't have to ever nail the throttle hard for power. Furthermore, it is very insurable at $65 mo for full coverage. For those that are concerned for fuel economy, I live in the country so my mileage is affected by a better balance between country and city, since I don't spend a lot of time in the city.
I get a combined figure averaging 21-22 mpg. I have conducted fuel economy tests and these are my figures: Cruising on the highway @ 70 = 27 mpg, @65 = 28 mpg, @55 = 33 mpg. Engine rpm's at 70 mph in 6th gear = 1650-1700 rpms! I spent 3-4 months before purchase, just reflecting on what I was sure I wanted and I am very happy with mine.
I was a Mustang/Cougar fan for decades, hopping them up and even building engines, but I always loved the looks of the '70 Challenger R/T.

After owning my V6 Chrysler 300 S for a year, I can confidently say I'd opt for the V6 every time. Currently pushing 349hp and 290lbs/ft with: 91 custom dyno tune, AFE Power intake, custom tube making use of the charger/challenger ram air hole in the airbox, ported hemi throttle body, PUG lower intake manifold, 8-hole fuel injectors from FWD Pentastars (atomizes better, unproven gains though), freer flowing dual exhaust using 2 27" glass packs and 2 12" vibrant resonators (for once this actually sounds good), and I swapped the rear end from a Scat Pack so I have a 3.09 LSD and respective axles.
She scoots. I'm not even done yet! I can't wait to finish my list and get re-tuned and hit a drag strip/track, but what's next on the list is an Unorthodox Racing lightweight crank pulley that unfortunately is rarely available but makes a decent difference, alternator pulley as well but that's bottom of the list as it's expensive for maybe 1hp and 1-2lbs torque, high discharge ignition coils, bigger brakes cuz those are still stock for some reason, and eventually a supercharger. Likely RIPP, possibly Sprintex, undecided and it's at least 1-2 years away.
As the list stands, without the super charger, I'm hoping for at MAX 370hp and 310lbs/ft. Each mod should scale the effectiveness of those before it, so that's my goal. I'm also ready to accept 360hp and 300lbs/ft. Supercharger WILL make my ultimate power goal, no higher than 480whp. I can't remember my torque limit, but the engine is strong however the transmission is the weakest link. I know of a youtuber that's broken 2 going higher than that. I know it was in the mid to high 500's but I'm playing it safe.
Moral of the story is I get 31mpg and hurt people's feelings at the same time.

Most of the people who talk down on v6's are former v6 owners who upgraded to v8's, or people who don't even know about these cars. If you look at it completely neutral, the v6 is not a bad car at all. Of course a v8 is faster and louder than a v6, but then there's also a bigger, faster, louder v8 than the one you have. As long as your car make you happy, that's all that really matters.

Great review. I will share my personal experience. My wife currently drives a 18 SXT Plus (like you test drove but in silver) and I used to have a 13 RT Charger. Besides the obviously lovely V8 rumble the only real difference between the 2 for me was when you floored the gas at speed. The RT definitely pushed you back in the seat where the SXT doesn't. Off the line they honestly felt very similar. Now mine had the old trans and not the new 8sp so that definitely helped the V6 feel fast off the line. She is currently wanting to upgrade her car but it would have to be a ScatPack cause to me the RT just isn't enough of a difference to me to justify the price difference. Your review pretty much says the same thing but if someone doesn't need the power it's hard to beat the MPG the V6 gives you .

We drove both, but chose the SXT. Don't get me wrong, some days I wish I would have bought the RT, but the biggest determining factor was the noise. The Hemi was so loud cruising down the highway that it impacted radio sound and the ability to have a conversation with each other. The SXT is just nicer for a couple hour cruise.

I think the largest issue with the SXT and GT are that people think they are slow, and I think the reason is because the original 2009 Challenger SE with the 3.5l V6 was not a fast car (I won't say it's slow, but it's for sure not fast) and people still think of those cars when they think V6 Challenger. The SXT runs mid 14 second 1/4 miles, that's not bad for $30K and 4000lbs. Sure there is a Japanese V6 sedan that is a bit faster, but my Scat Pack is faster than those, so there is always a faster car. The SXT/GT is fast enough IMO. For a DD they are great cars.

    • @Fade2BlackSS
      @Fade2BlackSS Před 4 lety +2

Facts, the older model SE's were pretty bad. I think they only made around 240hp or something like that. The newer ones with the A8 and 3.07 gearing aren't bad at all. V6 muscle cars just get a bad rep all around though. Camaro and Mustang guys get it too.

Although I absolutely love my Hemi, and all the modern Hemi's for that matter, Dodge did an awesome job with the 3.6. I have the same engine in my Wrangler and it's a great motor! It might not have the snappy torque of it's bigger brothers, it's still decently powered and makes the car fun to drive. If you think about it, the entry level 305 hp V6 is making around what some of the high trim level muscle cars were making back in the day for power. A little lighter on torque, but none the less still impressive.

Excellent video, very accurate. I have owned the V-6, the R/T Hemi and my son owns a Scat Pack, so I have driven all three extensively. The V-6, before the Hemi was a nice ride, surprisingly quick and super dependable getting 32 mpg driving from NY to Florida. Drove the Scat Pack, as stated a really fast car, it thrilled me. But I wanted a bit less and I got the R/T and boy did I choose well. The R/T in my opinion is very fast, pulls like crazy upstairs sound awesome and handles really good. But unlike the Scat Pack, it has cylinder shut off at highway speed, takes mid grade fuel and gets 25 mpg. It is so much fun. My first advice, buy a Challenger, it is just the best car for the money out there including high end imports. Second advice, if you want a beast, get a Scat Pack. If you want a tamer beast buy the R/T it’s an 80% Scat Pack with some compelling differences for average performance drivers like me. You got it spot on in your review.

This car is absolutely the best long distance road runner I've ever owned. The Pentastar and 8 speed eat up the miles effortlessly, delivering 30+ hwy mpg, and I never get tired behind the wheel. Im a working class guy, and its my daily driver. Still get multiple compliments weekly from complete strangers. The leather interior is very attractive and the seats are super comfortable. Fuel economy is good, the 8.4 infotainment works fine. Ive had the car up to 136mph where it seemed to top out. Acceleration is fine for me especialy in sport mode. The car is simply drop dead gorgeous and to this day puts a smile on my face every single day. For a person in my position it was the right choice. Would I prefer the V8? Sure, but only in the sense that we always "want" more than what we have. Dont you think a 5.7 guy would prefer a scat. And after awhile doesnt the scat driver envy the hellcat??? And on and on... Considering that 90% of driving is under 45mph the V6, especially when well equipped, makes a compelling case... At any rate all of us MOPAR ppl should stay positive and support each other, happy driving!

I've had my 2011 v6 since 2013 and love it. It has enough power to get out of it's own way and is plenty for me not to mention most people can't even tell the difference. Besides, I know what I would do with anything more and this keeps me honest.

I have the 300hp v-6 in my Chrysler 300C, and I added a K&N Typhoon air intake which really woke this engine up! The biggest gain was the throttle response and torque, not to mention the great sound ! My car sounds more like a V-8 yet still gets close to 31mpg on long road trips. If you can’t afford the Hemi, try this mod on your v-6 it’s well worth the price!

I rented an SXT challenger for a trip to Florida in 2018 which started a love affair for Dodge. A few weeks later I bought a Charger SXT and had it for 1.5 years until a kid hit us head on at about 60 mph. We walked away from it relatively unscathed. On the side of the highway my wife and I were like we gotta get another charger. It saved our lives undoubtedly. We bought an R/T charger in 2019 and then upgraded to a 2021 Scat pack widebody challenger and it has been amazing. Didn’t matter the trim level, they are all fun! Love your content racerx!

See as a 20 year old trying to get into the car community, I’m looking into an SXT, firstly insurance is way more expensive for me regardless, but the SXT is both less expensive, cheaper on insurance, and still looks good, but I feel like this is a good start to drive something that will handle different, and has a little more power than I’m used too, kinda work my way up I guess

It was nice to see a review on the two lower trim versions of the Challenger as the higher output engines in the Scat Pak and Hellcat get all the love. It would have been nice to have the city/highway fuel economy numbers of the V6 vs. the V8. I prefer Japanese cars to American cars but this was an informative review on the cars most people buy due to their lower price points. Lastly, I live in the northeast and want to commend Chrysler for being the only American pony car manufacturer to offer AWD in the GT version.

For those of us who live in very cold snowy climates, the GT and SXT allow us to enjoy the vehicle year round. I would love an RT but hate to spend money for something that would sit for many months out of the year. My GT is amazing and has plenty of power.
