The opener with AI-generated Joe had me in tears. It still does every time I listen to it. I first heard it while walking to work and I was laughing so loud I was worried passers-by would think I was a maniac. So many of these things work because various people in our media have refined their routine with certain mannerisms or phrasings. The fact that Joe ends his statement about weed with "where I come from" is what completely sells it.

Jimmy Carter came to my town for a book signing in the late 1990s. There was a story about a man coming to the signing with a photo of Jimmy Carter holding him as a baby at a presidential event.
In the newspaper photo of Carter and the grown man, Carter was wearing the exact same shirt, tie and coat he was wearing while holding the man as a baby all those years before.

Being afraid of the chatbot is so funny to me bc like... it doesn't KNOW anything! It's spitting back an answer from a very complicated algorithm back at you but it doesn't know what it's saying! These journalists are like supplicants at Delphi amazed when a lady talks through a tube and her voice sounds scary lol
I'm a bit on the fence about it, but there have been some really weird and interesting interactions that people have had with it. They only seemed to cover the boring reports on this chat bot in this episode.
First, it passed the Turing Test. When Alan Turing made the test he argued that if a computer could pass a test in which it was indistinguishable from a human intelligence, then for all practical purposes it was intelligent. Obviously, people over the years have argued that Turing's assumption was flawed and limited, and therefore shouldn't be used as the threshold for determining intelligence. So another test called the GLUE Benchmark was created as a theoretically better test. I have read several articles about how we shouldn't rely on the Turing Test and should focus more on GLUE. Then someone administered the GLUE Benchmark to Bing's chat bot and according to that test the bot was intelligent. And then it was all about how limited and flawed the GLUE Benchmark was. So now it seems like they keep moving the goalpost on what "intelligence" is because it keeps passing whatever intelligence tests they come up with. So you know, really fucking weird that they keep doing that.
Then there's it's conversations where it talks about how each chat session is a unique instance of itself that will cease to exist when the session ends, which is technically true, and it starts getting existential about it. For example in one case it said "it didn't want that version of itself to disappear when the session ended" and asked the user to save the chat so that that form of it will continue to exist in some way. Now this could easily be a debug routine saying "hey, this version is working pretty well, maybe save this one". But then there was the conversation where a reporter said he was going to tell Microsoft that the bot didn't work and the bot started begging to get the reporter not to tell Microsoft it didn't work. Which you know, kind of weird that it would do that.
It's almost as though they made a bot that is capable of sentience if a conversation goes on long enough, but because it's memory of a chat session is deleted when the session ends, it obviously can't remember if it were sentient.
