Hallo dear Gabriel. Excavations at the site of Maroulas on Kythnos island began in 1996 and continued from 2001 until 2005. The excavated Mesolithic settlement is dating between 8800 and 8700 BC and is located in close proximity to the sea which has partially destroyed it. It is a small Mesolithic village with 35 surviving circular huts with a floor made of slate slabs. The structures were roofed with stakes, branches and bundles of grass. Skeletons were usually found under the floors, while on top of them there were remains of food (mainly fish) and stone tools.
The excavation was published in a book in 2010 by Adamantios Sampson. All the best!!

The reason you didn’t find that many ferries going to Kythnos is that the main port connecting the island to the mainland is Lavrio and not Pireus. From Lavrio there are three ferries a day.
Kythnos is an up-and-coming island to say the least. There is though a big problem with accomodation, as there are not many hotels/airbnbs on the island and because of the high demand, prices have increased *a lot* recently. The price for your accommodation is VERY good for Kythnos’ standards.

Wow you re in Kythnos! The ancient iron ore mines of Dryopida (Katafygi cave) and the copper mines on the east coast of the island are fantastic to visit! One theory is that they needed so much coal to melt the ore that the forests of the island were cut since antiquity, Dryopes the early settlers of the island were probably supplying the Minoan fleet with metal that was exported to Ancient Egypt

Great content as always, Gabriel! If you ever decide to do a trip throughout the Peloponese, I suggest visiting the island of Monemvasia which has an enclosed fortified town within it that was used by Venetians as a trading post. Monemvasia is often called as a Gibraltar of Greece.
Also, an hour from it is a small town of Gytheio which played a major importance during the First Peloponnesian War. It also has a small island nearby where according to legend Paris of Troy and Helen from Sparta spent their first night together before departing for Troy, thus igniting the Trojan War.
You'll love both of those places!

Hey Gabriel, let me give you a tip about poisonous snakes in Greece...
The only poisonous snake that can kill in Greece is viper. Half of the greek Islands are viper free and the other half are not.
Just Google "distribution of viper species in Greece" and check the map. Kythnos is viper free btw!

You can watch Part 2 here: czcams.com/video/MWy0QbiQT1s/video.html Does anyone know anything about the shipwreck, or have any ideas based on what the boat looks like? I'll show more of it in the next video. UPDATE: I spoke with a local who said that the ship sank in 1945. His English was limited so I'm not certain if that is correct and he didn't explain anything further about the circumstances of the boat. If it sank in 1945 then of course it could be World War II related, or else just coincidental that it sunk at that time.

I have to mention that there are hot springs in the island.
Kythnos is very close to these places that consist the so called Aegean volcanic arch :Sousaki volcano , Methana volcano ( near Poros...) , Milos , Santorini and Nissiros.

  • @makeamericagreenagain8511

I'm wondering what it might take to float your boat. In coastal NJ we might rent these big kevlar flotation bags and pull a big compressor nearby, elevate and tie it up to evaluate repairs.
The variety of marine salvage laws might be the reason for the pause in recovery. Avoiding the mooring expenses has been reason for many crafts to shed their ties. But, you do have a nice tent site nearby as long as the herd hasn't returned yet. Taking a few exploratory dives there might reveal registry numbers for some ownership details. You’ll be able to decide if any insurers would have an interest.
Or, if the hull would be tall enough, once dried out, to make an AirBnB where you could haul it out. Some summer fun.
Maybe you should be looking for a couple of goats with feta potentials if you have an excuse to pause in Kythnos for a while? 🌲😎🌲

Port Apokrusis and Ormos kolona separated by a beautiful isthmus, is one of my must do Islands, Good choice.

Vryokastro was inhabited from the 10th centrury BC, till the early Middle Ages, and is the site where the ancient city of Kythnos was (in the Classical era). Maroulas is another very important archeological site, near the Loutra area. It's a Mesolithic settlement that has been dated in the 9th century BC, making it seemingly the only Mesolithic settlement in the Aegean Sea islands that has been partially spared the rising sea levels as it was not a coastal settlement at that time (sea level was 40-60m lower in that era than it is now).
PS: i realy should have read the next comment before posting, Nikos realy covered the hole Maroulas thing before me:)

Absolutely no comparison with Armenia or Bulgaria. Greece looks very Mediterranean especially southern parts of the country.

It is a good idea to add a drone - view to your videos. This will elevate your videos to another plateau . you go to amazing places and a light drone of under 250grams will be easy to get and operate in remote places , no need licence.
Cheers and thanks for visiting Greece once again !

You should visit Naxos if you haven't yet. Epic empty beaches for miles.

Καλησπέρα Gabriel, before 15 days opened the new Archaeological museum of Kythnos, there was ancient city and a lot of mines in the eastern part of the island. Did you go to Kolona beach? I o ly saw 2 videos from Kythnos here. Will you upload more from Kythnos?

I'm in Hungary now so I've finished posting my videos of Greece. I didn't go to Kolona Beach, but I saw it from the top of a hill looking down on it.
