Our final leg of the Canadian Tour found us in Alberta on a visit with Finning Cat! (They're one of the biggest Caterpillar Dealerships in the world with locations in multiple continents)
We were there to visit their Fort McKay facility where they build and rebuild 797 haul trucks. (it takes 12 weeks to reassemble a unit after it has been stripped for a rebuild).
FUN FACT: These trucks are typically run 5000 to 6000 hours per year, and are rebuilt every 12-15 years. #heavyequipment #caterpillar #construction
Equipment: Caterpillar 797B Haul Truck, Caterpillar 797F Haul Truck, Caterpillar 262 Skid Steer Loader, Caterpillar 798AC Mining Truck, Swamp Donkey Dozer

I work at the Decatur IL facility for cat. This facility produces all 797s and many other pieces of equipment! Nice to see similar processes at our dealers.
That’s so cool!!
Replying in my wifes account, I work in East Peoria TBU. I turn, drill, and cut the spiral Pinion and Gear for the differential.
You guys keep the world turning. Thanks for all you do!
I just visited that plant today 😅
Im working on a 797 now at tucson proving grounds
Nice! I work on 793s, we had 797s at one point but the tires were disproportionately expensive and much of our infrastructure was too small to support the 97s.
The dispatch system is usually a 2.4GHz mesh network and passes truck location, shovel assignments, and dump assignments. When it works, it's more efficient than voice radio communication. We also have full telemetry on all trucks so maintenance can pull up diagnostic information in near real-time on running trucks.
Had the privilege of building the prototype and regular production engines for these trucks when they first came out. Tandem 3512’s crank to crank. What a trip! They now use C175’s. I just retired from building the 3500 family of engines for 30 years in Lafayette IN. It’s an incredible product and these big machines are impressive to say the least!
If you had this truck and unlimited diesel for a day, what would you do?

Any damn thing I wanted
Fill the box with water and have a pool party
Go on rampage in Las Vegas 😂
make killdozer look like a small event
Only 1 answer to this question, I’d get the boys/crew together and see how many empty bud lights it’d take to fill that bed💪 awesome video man
I work for KalTire and we singled out the inner rubber on that 1316 truck, also when 204, 205, and 206 came to site, we did the last few steps to get the truck ready to go to work
Just incredible!! The size of these tools is remarkable, the people that build them and care for them are even more remarkable!
Thanks for the video, a joy to watch
So cool to see some of the insides of these machines, I work at the factory that builds the 793 and 797 ROP structure so I know what goes into the basic "bones" for the cabs but I've never seen a finished fully assembled cab before.
that's awesome!!
Where are the rop structure s built
@@frerikslaw Watertown SD, we send cat the painted cabs to cat where they do the final assembly
Great video I’m glad you got in the shop, after the last video up here I seen shots of finning and thought you might have missed out. Of all the trucks to show when saying they do a 12 week rebuild it’s the one that’s been in the shop for 5 months.
Wow I was playing with a mod for farming simulator with a 994k and end up watching with 797f truck. Caterpillar is a beast company I don't see anyone trying to be this big.
These are HUGE trucks but are surprisingly easy to operate. Very well designed and built.
This is mental, brings out the small boy in every man! :)
So funny enough for this year, heavy metal has bought every 797 haul truck finning will build this year. They can’t get enough technicians to help build them. I work for the hitachi vendor in Alberta and we’ve done in our shop, a dozen units just for heavy metal for up north and I think we’re expecting more units to get built. 490s, 690s and 890s
6:20 they have exhaust dumps in regular dump beds as well for asphalt work but… the bed will rot out 2x as fast. The beds will hold moisture and salt.
ahhhh interesting
I enjoyed watching your video of a 797 work in process. I actually work in the Decatur, IL plant where the 797 is built and 5 1/2 years ago I worked on the 797 line. After the test booth I helped to break them down to get it ready for shipping. Largest truck means large parts and large tools. It was a tough job!
I remember driving those exact 204 and 547 trucks! It was just last year when they were freshly commissioned and handed over to Syncrude for their base mine. I had an absolute blast with the F series trucks. Those trucks packed an immense amount of power.
thank you for the video explanation of the video about heavy equipment. this adds to our insight. in my country is no stranger to the use of trucks and excavators. keep working... greetings steel nails from us Indonesia
I like that the cupholder has a slot for a handle to allow for thermoses during cold weather. It wouldn't surprise me if it was built to fit a specific size of vacuum bottle.
I was in the crew that welded together the first 797 truck bed in Arizona, May 1998.
So glad I found this channel! Keep the awesome content coming
Awesome content!!
Fantastic informative video. Loved the music and everything about how you did it! I’ll be watching more.
I hauled some of those engines back and forth to Edmonton to be rebuilt. 3516s - 35 litre displacement, V16 configuration. 25,000lbs a piece! Even those electric wheel motors were over 10,000lbs.
sweet!!!
I think you omitted a very important part of these mechanical monstrosities; the tires! Great and informative video. I enjoyed it.
Freaking awesome video Aaron those trucks are insane
Awesome!!!❤
Great video, thank you!
thanks for watching!
This was so fun to watch! 797 is such a beast!
Thanks for watching!
Let's hear it for the wee can of WD40 on that monster frame @3:40 - even monster machines need some lovin'! LOL
I drive a 793F for work in Australia, they are so much fun! Very lucky to be able to have the experience and get paid well to do it.
I've had 204 dump next to me quite a few times now... good trucks for sure! C5 and C6 (798's) are also good as well. Driven those two trucks in particular quite a few times. Powerhouses to say the least.
Amazing machines!
Great video!
👍👍👍👊😎
Absolutely love the style of these Vlogs. Brilliant filming, editing and sound production produce a great quality overall. I appreciated things like the sound note when the Finning CAT logo clunked onto the center of the screen, and the perfect level adjustment of the background music between Aaron's voice parts - not only does the level fade or rise to the sweet spot, it feels like the music is at the right point in its own track to make that moment the best it can be. Love the excitement and passion that shows through!
Cool machines!
Awesome video love the shop episodes
thanks for watching Ron
Wow! Replace the undercarriage twice a year?!?!? Just the cost of that alone boggles the mind! Great video, thank you.
beautiful
Youre living my dream. As a heavy equipment apprentice here in BC. Its always been a dream of mine to check out finning out there in Alberta
Teck is hiring HD apprentices in the elk valley, check it out
Awesome 👏🏻
I work with 797F cinse eight years ago. i like a lot!!
Aaron cool video good stuff
thank you for watching
Cool video thx👍
Thanks for watching
I got to sit the very first at 797 Truck at the Decatur Il. plant. It was so cool when they started it up.
Awesome ❤
outstanding
He said the phrase!! Hell ya
I work at Toromont CAT in Ontario. Biggest we see are 775. These are quite massive. Love the videos!
Detour lake mine in ontario has 795s ans 798s and the new one going to open at gogama will have 793s I believe there's some other gold mines who run 793s aswell
Enjoyed this a lot. I have operated some equipment that came close to these sizes, Mostly Dozers and excavators that load these and tend,. Am retired and miss it.
thanks for watching Peter
15 years ago I saw a Cat D11 dozer for the first time at a highway construction site here in Bulgaria. I stopped my car and sat there for half an hour just looking at the machine working.
I work for finning. Awesome company.
I drove that 1315 and 1359 at for hills the other day
I worked at Bradken in Kansas where they cast the axle for these. They are huge and would make a good video for you.
Music is MAD!
I don't get to work on those here in NC, biggest I see are 777 trucks, 375 excavators and 992 loaders. They are simple and straight forward to work on, just exhausting because of all the climbing up and crawling under I have to do.
What a luxury truck
I thought sand was corrosive 🤪🤣 love watching your videos man see if you can do an in depth with the 24 class graders!
Best upload by far, thanks Aaron, boys with toys, pity you could spend a whole day there , keep up the good work and maybe one day you can come to the UK and play with our very small JCBs 😂😂😂
Just a thought 😂
Looking forward to the next company you visit.
This is how car should be made to be rebuilt and last a long time and be simple
It takes 12 weeks to build compared to a day for a regular truck they aren’t that simple
@@kingduck3192 they take a long time because they are huge. The frame alone takes weeks to fabricate. All the old cats you see everywhere are still running because they are quality made and they are pretty “simple” in the terms of they are just made to run and do their jobs, not any un needed crap added like a lot of unreliable cars these days.
The dirt still does stick to some degree especially when it gets real cold
I’m a technician for a caterpillar dealer and it just amazes me to see these big ass trucks built brand new. The biggest truck I’ve seen is a 775 which is nothing compared to these. I want to become an operator eventually but I’m not too sure on how to start out.
outide of the ft mcmurray area im not sure, but up there id recomend you look at the haul truck operator course at keyano college
great video bet you had an amazing time round all that plant. hey why dont you see if you can get a video walk around of cat 6120 prototype. take care Dylan
The size of these things makes perfect sense, but it definitely still makes my brain itch.
I used to live in Fort McMurray and knowing about the oil sands was awesome, but tryna get a job is a whole other story 😂
7:48 my boy not having a good day if he has the rapid-tap out😂
Pretty job site, not for long :))
Sick Machines. Would love to operate them.
The ONLY thing not oversize....
The cupholders
hahaha
😂😂😂
Imagine rolling up to the drive thru in that, probably more like rolling over the drive thru lol
"It doesn't have mud flaps it has mud curtains."🤪
Monster max will never too that! Time for a new build Cody from monster max
This is the video every dude wanted to see
Imagine having a car that has a grill with stairs
It's crazy how much the earth is getting ripped apart 24/7
I operated the C5 at Syncrude base mine.
11:20 it better have a heated steering wheel.
I picked that 204 truck up from the finning yard to bring it to basemine! That thing is insane.
That’s sick!!!
Wish you talked a little more about the technical aspect of the trucks. I’m so curious about those engines. They’re huge!
I'm not smart enough for that
6469 cui V20 in the case of a 797F, apparently makes around 4000 HP
the 798 AC's engine is similar but has four fewer cylinders, and of course driving a generator instead of a mechanical drivetrain like in the 797
I blinked, but just managed to catch the interior review.
Cat engineering designs truck box to materials weight per cubic yard to haul maximum pay load. Load volume using SAE formula, light material super large box, very heavy smaller truck box.
Hi Aaron
Worked in the slate quarry before. Worked with subpar equipment that spent more time being fixed than it did working. Drove a cat 35 ton haul truck made in the late 60s. No heating or air and summer operations were brutal in it. Rather drive a truck like this over what I used to drive
1415 truck and 1359 are at fort hills suncor...I just blew 1415 motor up its stuck on the 220 dump with the box up getting pulled apart
Suncor has 1415 at fort hill atm
Did you steal Breadstick Ricky's hard-hat? 🤣
I swear the turnaround is quicker in aus, but from memory they are the 794's
You know, eventually these trucks will become so large it'll make more sense to put wheels on the processing plant and just drive that to the mine.
Tracks every 6 months?! wish our ones lasted that long
"How big of a garage door do you want? "
"Yes"
Finning CAT 👍
Lol that's what we used to call loin cloths back in my scat str!pp3r days hahaha mud curtains omg stop hahaha 🤣🤣🤣
You know who should get a chance to ride in one of those 797s? The guy that runs the KT3406E CZcams channel. I'm just imagining him saying "Thats a pretty big truck" in his accent, as he stands in front of it scratching his head.
im also a mechanic working at monark cat dealer in phillipines
Seen many of them being built at the factory but they did not put them together there but I think the one time
I work in a foundry that makes parts for these kinds of trucks and I'm trying to see if I can recognize any of them
big ol tonka truck
These men are foundation of todays society, they make and repair these machines and deserve the best! Also I love being a man and liking stuff like this so freaking cool seeing huge creations made out of steel moving around huge amounts of earth
I like that even here you see a can of WD-40
Canadians dont drink those massive american drinks.
That cup holder is the general size for any country outside the 🇺🇸
🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
It fits a Tim’s coffee
to be fair most people want big cupholders for bulky water bottles even a 44 oz drink will fit in a regular cupholder thanks the the innovation of the tapered cup
@@griffoutdoortv5882 american yes, not anywhere else.
What about my Big Gulp??
More you drink, more ya gotta pee! Sounds like it’s take a long time to take a whiz! Operators need to have bladder like nurses- that can last a whole shift!
I drive a Hitachi EH750-3. I need to upgrade to this 😅
Come tour Mossville tech center, if they let ya.
This seems like a fun, but VERY taxing job.
Can you please show us where the wind key is inserted for the 797F haul truck please
