Is is US only? I live in Canada
Same question, im from Europe
I'm also interested, based in Europe as well. I've been begging to feel one for as long as I remember
I would venture to say the VR4 was not designed to compete with the NSX, STI, or Supra. They set their target on the Skyline GTR, the VR4 even had rear wheel steering, just like the GTRs. But the GTR was a better car than the VR4s were
@@dznutsification Probably right in markets that had GTR's but in the US we couldn't get the STI or GTR in the 90s so it's competition was really the 300zx and the Supra.
These cars are either the most prized possession in someone’s garage or sitting in a field rotting away since 2002. No in between whatsoever.
You're right.
I can confirm. One of my neighbors has one in his yard clapped out and it's been there for a few years now
Literally. Out here in Phoenix you will see them rarely but it's either in someone's yard not moved for years or clapped out on the highway
Simple he wasn't trying to get you to enter to win one then now he is. Just skipped right over that whole reliability thing these cars are famous for lol. They are super cool cars and ls1 f body fast but they are always broken and a fortune to fix. Nothing is as expensive as old high tech.
Makes me think of the Pink Stealth that was found abandoned at some airfield.
Owned a BMW E64 with an S85 and a 3000gt VR4. My kid will attend community college.
😂
Worth it.
Your E64 would spank it. Right. I know my F80 would
College is only useful for stem, law and medical to even get work.
Community college is good enough god dammit!
" everyone has a Hank hill, no one has a good Hank hill" lmfao ahh that's some nostalgia

Good point! I wonder if there was an A6M2 edition…
If I had one, I’d drive it past the naval base to make the old-timers nervous.
I mean Mitsubishi still makes fighters to this day lol, they're licensed copies of F-16 and F-15s, but they're still fighters nontheless

@@Beer_Dad1975 well yes but they still work under the same name no? Afaik they're a branch of the Mitsubishi company as a whole
My neighbour has one of these. Every sunday, the building shakes a bit when he turns it on and goes for his weekly drive. Brilliant sound.
one of the teachers at my high school had one, i walked by it and stared at it every day for four years
No Eclipse on Eclipse Monday...
Yeah for real? He could have reviewed one of those and would have gotten way more views.
That would have been a genius idea.
A nice GSX would be great
Nope, gotta hype the raffle.
That was slick my friend..lol
I've got a 95 VR-4 with 52k miles. Garage kept, sunday driver. Such a fun and beautiful car. Always the eye catcher at every car show i bring it to, and always the only one. To find one of these in the wild, let alone in good condition is near impossible.
Wow, still shy of the 60k service, that is amazing. Seems like 1995 was the best year for those cars. My base model was an awesome daily driver. Made crappy days good.
enjoy it in good health my dude
My mind's tellin' me NO!
But my body, my body's telling me YES.
This!

Drip, drip, drip.
I listened to my body on this.
$56. No regrets.
Back when Mitsu was a major player in the game...now the normal versions of these cars are taking up space in a Dollar General parking lot somewhere, with a floor covered in broken-off fake nails and cigarette packs
this whole thing smacks of effort man
*And every ebay and pep boys part known to man. 🤣
Not only they were huge, they were on the Bleeding Edge at the time. What they did with the 3000GT was, to me, on par with that Honda did with the NSX
UUUUGH That my friend is too acurate.
An Ex friend of mine did a full 100% build on a base FWD version. Yah made 600HP. open diff FWD still with shitty paint.
The official car of Facebook Marketplace over-promising and under-delivering.
I keep looking at them but then deciding it's just not worth the headache, especially knowing they're pretty much all mangled by previous owners.
They're also INSANELY overpriced here in Norway, which helps keep me in check
This one def has some iffy paint
@@natedetailscarsAlmost every 3000GT I’ve seen has bad paint, whatever Mitsubishi used on these did not hold up
It needs to weigh 1000 lbs less. But then it would be an evo coop.
@@leadfoot8593 It'd be an eclipse basically or the predecessor to the 3000gt; the Starion (If you're fine with only having RWD). Now, tbh, people typically see the Starion as the predecessor to both of those cars, but the eclipse is an American market only car assembled domestically with imported parts and the Starion was Not. Outside markets did get a Starion with a 12v Cyclone DASH 4g63 turbo though, which I'm jealous of, because I'm stuck with the torquey, but valve floaty forklift engine and wideblock 4g63's aren't easy to come by.
The VR4 was the Sega Dreamcast of the 90's turbo charged Japanese sports cars.
This is a perfect description.
Also love Brian’s enthusiasm. He’s an old millenial and these are their muscle cars
Am I an elder millennial or the tail-end of GenX? I was born in 1981
@@RegularCars
I was born in 80 and I have the same identity crisis. I think they call us Xellenials. That makes sense because we we are old enough to appreciate Nirvana but didn’t have smart phones until our 20s. And realistically, we are old enough to understand the way 911 changed everything.
The same as Silents look at Winga Dinga's and Boomers look at Muscle cars (Woovy Groovy?) As a 70 Gen-X I loved 60's muscle but even in the mid 80's they were getting out of reach for H.S. guys. But early Malaise were right there. 73 Z/28 was my groove.
@@seththomas9105 I still appreciate the winga dinga cars for the design aspects, and what they represented to society.
As a firm Xer(77), I can vouch for the Xellenial statement 👍...80-82 counts as it's own generation
I own a 96 Galant 2.0 V6. Mitsubishi definitely peaked in the 90s
Yep! If you owned a Mitsubishi in the 90s, you were on your game lol
1991 Lancer GTI 16V here! Its so fun to drive, and has a surprisingly comfy ride to it. Love the thing, even if being FWD means it understeers a bit, its very easy to drive fast, planted.
every japanese company did as far as sports cars go, they were all making multiple unique sports cars. Now there's like 2 per company and some of them are shared between companies like the BRZ/86 or Supra/z4.
I had a 92 galant 2.0gls. was a very nice car to drive but rusted away from nice looks to big holes within 2 years. They are set up to fall apart everything at the same times
That gallant was no joke
That Award is the Motor Trend Car of the Year, which is a tiny bit more meaningful than JD Power, but still akin to a Grammy.
1991 Import Car of the Year. I had that cover on my junior high binder.
The original Gran Turismo in 1997 gave you $10,000 to buy your first used car. I sh*t you not, mine was a forest green Mitsubishi 3000GT.
... I still want that car to this day.

Techmoan had already explained that the notches on top of the cassette tall the player what type of tape is.
It's always odd when you find out a channel you watch is apparently the go to about a topic that everyone knows.

The 3000GT was the Demo car in Gran Turismo. It was the first car I drove and it was fastest one after the GTR and then Impreza.
Fun to drive, NIGHTMARE to work on.
As a longtime VR4 owner, they're not nearly as bad as you think. I will say that working on the INTERIOR can be challenging but a Z32TT is FAR FAR worse than any 3k
That's an understatement. This thing is just evil for a mechanic.everything on that engine is just hard to access.
Amen to that.
Man I entered to win on this one so fast …I literally stopped everything I was doing and jumped on this one. First (and maybe only) rcr giveaway I’ve entered but if there was ever one for me to enter, this is it. I’ve got a garage full of 90s era Mitsubishi parts and learned the basics of engines on this engine. Always wanted the 3000gt but never able to get one so the old gen 1 montero restoration has practically been my life outside of work for the past two years. Would LOVE to sit this thing in my garage next to its big brother from the same era.
@@davidkeetz Good luck! I'm sure it's not too bad once you do it a few times 🫡

i love the reverence to that
Did you tune them? Cause they are very reliable if you don't mess with them and service them properly
@grunkohlaktionar7474 It was the late 90's/early 2000's. Had the HKS alphabet in it and tuning wasn't as advanced as it is now. Was one of my favorite cars to this day regardless. The AC controls were so futuristic at the time. The active aero. AwD. Such a fun car.
@@grunkohlaktionar7474 ... or clutch drop... but that's usually not the engine
Wow, this car still looks absolutely fantastic
Totally
I owned a Stealth RT, which is a less complicated version of this car. I loved it. It was an incredible car with incredible memories. And I would never own one today, even given away. The maintenance and repairs on these is insane and wallet-draining.
U should go watch his review on a stealth r/t.
I had this car right after highschool it was so awesome. I still miss it 20 years later. What a beauty. Definitely ahead of its time.
My best friend growing up got a Dodge Stealth r/t for his first car, then later sold it and got a fiji blue 3000GT VR-4. The years we spent driving around turning heads with that thing are some of my fondest memories. I just found out late Friday night that he died suddenly. RIP buddy, you'll be missed. I hope to get a VR-4 someday in Fiji blue and relive the memories.
He loves it, so much that it became a proper review
I’ve had 5 vr4’s, 2 spyder vr4’s (which I don’t like as much tbh) and currently a 99 VR4. These cars are NOT as unreliable/hard to work on as everyone says they are. I love them and will keep my 99 vr4 forever. Glad someone gives them some love in the reviews . If you’re ever in the Grand Rapids MI area, you’re welcome to my 99 vr4 (completely stock, I daily drive it though!)
I was a tech at a Mitsubishi dealership for little while. Got to drive these basically new. They were VERY FUN to drive. Insanely horrible to work on!
EDIT: That is a Pioneer CD cartridge rebranded as Mitsubishi, neat! Also these cars had ACTIVE AERO!!!!!
Dodge Stealth R/T / 3000GT VR-4 are classics that never really had the respect they deserved. Too bad they are so hard to find these days.
I miss the relationship Dodge had with Mitsubishi in the days in which Chrysler had a stake in the company. Not only could you order up this badass car as the Dodge Stealth, but my first car, a 1990 Dodge Colt, was a base model Mitsubishi Mirage. I bought mine for brand new for $6500 out the door- crank windows, no AC, no air bags (motorized seat belt alternative) manual transmission. It got 45 MPG. Loved that car!
What a joy it must have been to have money in the 90’s to purchase such well tuned and balanced cars.
I thought you would have paid more attention to the Dodge Stealth R/T in this review. 5 years ago you called it overpriced, overhyped, overly complex, and slow. You described the engine as if it's made out of glass. Is there something I missed in this review that sets the Dodge Stealth and 3000GT apart?
It's literally the same car with different aesthetics
Yeah. The difference is he wants you to buy his merchandise for a “chance” to win it. Pro tip: you ain’t winning this car. A buddy most likely is.
The difference is that now he is scamming a giveaway for this car
Yeah this is sad. I love my stealth r/t turbo and he was not kind to it at all in his review. This is a bit of a slap in the face.
I remember riding in my aunts Saab 900 in the late 90s when a 3000GT flew past us on the highway in the north of Sweden. When we arrived at my grandmas cabin in Finland a few hours later I told my my parents about the car and my aunt goes “That guy in the ferrari drove like a maniac” to which I still can hear my 7 year old self answering “That was not a ferrari, it was a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4!”
I had seen those tail light hours upon hours playing Gran Turismo and would recognize them in a heartbeat.
I rarely see Mitsubishis from this era, but when I do they are all leaving behind a thin-to-moderate haze of blue smoke.
valve stem seals are toast. All turbo charged Japanese engines from this era have the same problem.
That's the 3.0L Mtsu V6 from the 90s that I remember. For sure.
I remember my $600 98 Mirage I bought to learn stick in like 15 years ago was already on its second smoky engine, in it's defense it did hold up to my constant abuse for several months before I sold it along.
Thank you for doing RCR. These videos bring me lots of joy.
What coincidental irony that you recalled the Pontiac GTO as being a wild factory car sold to consumers when the 3000GT is literally named the Mitsubishi GTO in Japan lmao.
I'm also a car journalist and i recently drove the dodge stealth rt twin turbo and i was mind blown by how good it was. You're so right this car is the most underrated car ever and where i live, Quebec Canada, collectors have starts to collect them
This was one of my all time favorite car interiors and I always liked the overall car design. Turbo 6, AWD and longer and sleeker than the Eclipse, it was the working man's supercar. The ONLY short coming making it less than some Italian supercar was the engine placement.
I think it was a very, very underrated car and it deserves all the collectable and classic status it gets.
Glad to see you come around on these! Your dodge stealth review was pretty savage 😂
You don't even need Techmoan, cassette tapes have cutouts on their spine that denote if the tape is type 1, (ferrous), type 2 (chrome) or type 3 (ferrochrome) or the hallowed type 4 (metal).
It's not wizardry, very basic tape decks will be able to distinguish between the different types.
The real kicker here is that the car stereo is capable of recognising and type 4, not every tape deck could do that, so it's something special.
Anyone born after about 1980 that isn't an audiophile wouldn't know that though. It is however common knowledge for all of us old people 😂
Own a JDM GTO TT6 in the UK. Been waiting for a regular review of one of these!!
I still have mine. Lately, this car is turning more heads as I go down the road and getting more thumbs up from people as I drive by. To see a running example is rare these days, since most of the kids from 2001-2009 kissed them with trees trying to be "fast and furious". I'm so glad I kept mine all these years, I wouldn't even want to begin to search for one unless it came from a known good standing member in the 3S community. To get a 3000GT/Stealth today, will require deep pockets to keep it running, and I'm by no means bulls87tting you on that. This is not a car you just decide to get into. It's a commitment.
I would know, I just wanted a nice cool, rare car for my first car, so I got the 3000gt, needless to say I've already put over 6k into a brand new paint job, tires and wheels, timing belt, valves, serpentine belt, head gaskets, etc etc, but thankfully I'm able to do this because of my small online business
I love that the ball cooler vent is adjustable so I can manspread and still know my car has me covered.
Damn i miss mine...
Twin Turbo V6, AWD, 4 wheel steering, active aero, digital AC, crazy stereo equalizer. The 95 is the best year.
i had the same 6 cd changer on my pioneer disc player, freaking incredibly satisfying pulling the disc trays in and out
YEAH
I know it's controversial, but I do like the pop up headlights better
1st gen is by far the best looking.
This makes me so happy that you loved driving this car. As an owner, I always had to "explain" why this was my favorite JDM legend.
I absolutely LOVED the 3000GT VR4 back in the 90s! We got this instead of the Skyline GTR.
FM diversity is just a fancy way of saying it had multiple antennas. The Subaru SVX also had that, but it's not advertised on the head unit. Basically, the radio can switch between the antennas, depending on which one has a stronger signal at the time. It's pretty cool how well it works, but you'd never really know it was there unless you installed an aftermarket head unit since most of them only utilize one of the antennas.
Oh cool, didn't know that. Thanks
Yep its called a Diversity Booster in the Audis
"This motor is more fragile than a Proud Boy's self-efficacy."
-RCR reviewing this car in 2018.
He better be careful before he riles up the MAGAts.
Overblown imo. Kinda like how an Altima doesn't automatically make you a bad driver, it attracts that certain type so you associate the two. 6G72TT doesn't automatically mean it's gonna blow up, it attracts the type to trash it or make it unreliable with dumb mods. With time people also figured out how to mod them reliably, it's easier now than ever to not blow up.
The adjustable ball cooler is the entire reason to own the car, everything else is just gravy

my Ex got one of these back then, parked her 89 Turbo TA to keep miles of it, and got this car. i really miss it, was a 91. really handled, fast, and the active exhaust thing was pretty cool.. hit a button and it got louder. and i think the rear spoiler flipped up when you went over 45, 50, something like that. was pretty sweet! ☮
Eearly 2000s I knew a guy in high school who had one of these, about 500 horsepower. Local police pulled him over and ripped up his seats convinced that he had drugs somewhere in the car. He did not in fact have drugs, and explained that this car was bought for him because he was a rich kid not a drug dealer.
I love opening CZcams and seeing a retro review of one of my favorites
I used to want one of these at one point at time not a vr4 just a 3000GT in general so I used to ignore people telling me that parts are few and in between and how cramped the engine bay was. One day i was at a car meet and met a guy with a blue one he popped his hood and i took a look at the engine and said damn it really is cramped in here
I daily my base 3000, car really doesn't give me any issues.
You flip flopped like CRAZY from the stealth video and actually spoke facts this time.
The Stealth was beat, as anyone who knows these cars could tell third hand.
This is what a GOOD one feels like.
@@Leightspeed_nope. The dodge is still driven every summer and I push it hard.

I still love these so much. One of my dream cars growing up, got a non-turbo in HS, begrudgingly sold it after college, now the nostalgia bug has hit me hard and I'm lusting after a proper VR-4 before they're unattainable. Maybe I'll go buy a mug..

I saved all my pennies as a kid and bought one of these for my first car. It had issues but i drove the balls off of it down PA back roads having some of the best fun of my life... then i totalled it. I will always remember that car and always consider getting another one. Thank you for shedding some much needed attention on such a legend ❤
The VR4 with snow tires is the most amazing vehicle to drive in Minnesota winters.
The 3KGTVR4 is one of my favorite cars out there despite it's short comings with the reliability. It and the 300zx both aged like a fine wine. Both look like new cars still today. But the 3KGT had so much tech from active aero, damping, and 4ws. The interiors are great as well. But to me a 3KGT is a bit of a forbidden fruit. You know you want one, but you know it's going to come with downtime, and hard items to service. If you can't do it your self, its going to come with hefty service bills as well. If you want to modify it, you know it's fragile and already built to it's limits from the factory. (unlike the Supra which was overbuilt) I think we all want one, but sometimes just know better than to buy one. To me, it's on my bucket list of cars, but at a low priority.
Spotted you on the road in Ardmore today in crazy taxi. Looks good!
Love these cars! Every time i drive by one sitting in the field rusting away, I get a little misty eyed. As a child of the 90's, these will always be special to me.
I have so many RCR mugs at this point, but the 3000GT VR-4 is my unicorn, and it's my birthday this month.
Amazing that there was ZERO mention of the 300ZXTT considering it was the progenitor of the six cylinder twin turbo GT car. When the GTO here was designed, there was no 4th gen Supra; it was gunning for the Z. It even ripped off Nissan tech like all-wheel steering. It's a far more apt comparison than a 4th gen Supra or a NSX. Heck, with all the mentions of fighter jets and ad talk, you didn't even mention that the Z32 ad FEATURED a fighter jet. I think the lack of recognition lends creedence to that car being the ACTUAL dark horse of the 90s.
It's 2024 and they haven't done a single Z33. These guys seem to dislike Z lineage heavily, for whatever reason.
Brings me back. I remember in the late 90s in high school oogling the Dodge version of this thing for sale at a dealer next to the school. Just to tease all us teenage boys they made sure it was right out front and of course as close to the entrance road to school as they could put it. There was many a sad boy the day it finally sold.

Was looking for this comment. Otherwise I would have posted it myself
I've been fascinated by the 3000GT VR4 since the mid-90s. Never got a chance to drive one, though.
A kid at my daughter's high school drives a really well-preserved base model 3000GT in dark blue, which is kinda cool. It occurs to me that would be akin to one of my classmates having something like a 60's Mustang or Camaro back in the day. Damn, I'm old!
Perfect review for this car. What that car came with was crazy for its day.
For those that went right to rage posting: he does address his previous sentiments on the stealth at 19:27. I went back and watched the Stealth review since everyone is up in arms - he still praises a lot for the same weirdness and echoes the sentiments about Mitsubishi shooting their shot with all their tech, and it looking sharp. In this one, he actually seems to drive the vehicle, forgoing the criticisms about the MSRP (which was one of the biggest hangups), how the Stealth RT was overshadowed by the Viper, and the forum-echoed sentiment of their powertrain fragility and comes away with a new appreciation from just driving it. By separating his usual nuanced views on value and society and whatnot, and just driving the car - he learned to really appreciate it, or maybe HE SALES PITCH GIVEAWAY AND IS BAD.
He could have driven the dodge stealth. I didn’t stop him. So yeah this is all about making money.
He also doesn't have the owner, wary of their engine or whatever blowing up, sitting right next to him. It's also a different series and spec. Or maybe his opinion changed, considering what he says at 17:27
@@updog4L and a later year, the 1991 stealth he drove back then had all of the fancy but fragile features except active aero(the stealth never had active aero), this 1995 one only has the active aero(removed in 96) and 4WS

Yeah I just rewatched the stealth video and something seems off with it. Maybe the owner told him not to go crazy?
@@aldo9923 nope.
This is back when Mitsubishi still had passion and soul for their vehicles. As a 90s kid I remember seeing this back then along with the other JDM legends (that were sold here in the US)....also I had this car on the original Gran Turismo back in 1998 😆
that cd changer cartridge is compatible with 90's pioneer home units. i have one and it still works flawlessly.
Bruh, that mic in the engine compartment was a terrific idea. Fuck me
It's ironic that you said the car is like being in a fighter plane, because if you didn't know, Mitsubishi made fighter planes during WWII. 😊

I’m just an overall 80’s and 90’s Mitsubishi fan, and have owned a bunch of them from DSM’s to my current Galant VR4 and 94 Stealth Twin Turbo. However my friend has owned the same 94 Stealth Twin Turbo since right out of high school, and I bought a twin to that car when one popped up local to me. We personally think they are some of the most overlooked cars of the 90's mostly because people got so caught up in the Supra craze
I knew someone that had one of these back in the day. It had a lot of features that i had never seen before. It was the first car with active aero that I had ever seen. The spoiler moved as you increased speed. And it would pump up the front shocks under hard braking to keep the nose from dipping. It was an amazing car for it's time.
I remember when yall reviewed the non-VR4 and the entire review was about how fragile these are, how expensive repairs are, and how parts are hard to find.
He reviewed my 91' Dodge Stealth Turbo and shit all over the same dam car.
@@crisbwilliams Yeah but didn't you insist that he couldn't rev it or give it any power whatsoever? Why even both bringing your 90s Japanese muscle car out if the reviewer has to drive it like it's some precious antique? Wasted the dude's time and he was probably super annoyed by you lol - you deserved it.
@@thrillhousecycling7260 Where you there with us? nope? So stop with the bs lies. Dude could do whatever he wanted and he was in a bad attitude that day. Wore flip flops that day too. All information about the car was told to him and he didn't even include anything I told him, but he did mention everything in the 300gt review.
@@crisbwilliamsman flip flops while driving is comfortable as hell.
@@crisbwilliams lol the flip flops comment is so weird. You said "he gave it some gas" as if it was some huge privilege. Ehhhh nah, your car was a bad example, this one wasn't 🤷
Good luck finding someone willing to work on this thing when the time comes.
I can do it
Become your own champion wrenchlet.
For the right price you can find a skilled mechanic
I currently own one of these, wanted one since the first Gran Turismo. Absolute stellar driver's car. Made for highway trips. Its depressing we will likely never see Mitsubishi like this again.
First time watching one of your videos. Really enjoying how weird you are
I’m a little confused because you certainly didn’t have as glowing of a review of the TT dodge stealth….?
