$248 Mongoose Durham 26 Mountain Bike from Walmart - an Affordable 26er with an aluminum frame

  • Budget bikes are returning and this review is on the Mongoose Durham 26, an affordable mountain bike available at Walmart. Priced at $248, the Durham features an aluminum frame, trigger shifters, disc brakes and double wall alloy rims on the 26" wheels. I like the old school feel of 26" wheels, but the Durham is budget, so what are the tradeoffs? Check them out and comment below if you want to see the Durham turned into a project bike - Project Pork Chop.

Saw a grown man on a BMX bike today. I asked him why he rides it, and he said, "Because it's fun!"
Moral: Who cares what size you bike is, as long as riding it is fun.
    Ride on, Kev!
And good on you for giving the 24-inch to the local non-profit. That's a pro move!

Years ago I was driving downtown and told my passenger to “look at that old guy on a skateboard.” They laughed, but I was impressed. Forward a year or so and I ended up meeting him while riding my Vespa. It turns out he looks older than he actually is - skateboarding must be rough 😂 - but he’s a super nice guy and a wiz at wrenching on vintage Vespa scooters!

26ers are fun. I've been on 29ers since 2006, but recently built up a mid-late 90s Proflex full suspension. Ripped that thing atound the trails with some 29er and 27.5+ riders and they were shocked an old 80mm travel bime could keep up. Long live 26!

I just did a store pick up from Walmart of the Durham. You would have been much happier with the 29" version. I'm 5'7", but because the 29" version has such a low standover height, I went with it. I actually own the Specialized version of the Durham; the Specialized Rockhopper. I bought the Durham because some of the parts are actually interchangeable. Between the two bikes, the front wheels match and even the brake rotors are the same diameter. The Durham will be my beater / bar / grocery / winter bike and if it gets stolen, I'm not out much, verses the $700 pre pandemic price I paid for the Rockhopper. I love your reviews man keep up the great work!

  • @Taser3141

Oooh! Project Pork Chop! The rear dropouts are quick release compatible so that means the Durham could handle a 9 speed cassette (theoretically). Microshift makes a very nice 1x9 shifting system. Some low end hydraulic brakes if you're a hydro fan, or Avid BB7s would be a nice step up.

Bought the 24” for my daughter. Already ditched the 3x for a square taper 1x off of Amazon and replaced the drivetrain with an 8 speed freewheel and some SRAM X4 components I had laying around. This is a decent, inexpensive entry bike for a lot of people. I’ll eventually replace the fork. I really like the frame expect for the derailleur hanger-major bummer.

Was debating on whether to swap the frame out and get a real 1 by (as opposed to my just keeping the taller sprocket of the original 3x. It does go fast down a hill...but I do miss the walking gear for the steep climbs...but I still have not purchased the 29 size YET. I did buy a Mongoose Ledge X1... have not done any upgrades yet. Another thing I noticed is the rear brake mounting is a "suicide brake mount". If the rear axle isn't tightened down properly, the application of the rear brakes coud cause the rear axle to drop out of the bike. I haven't wrenched on or ridden my new Durham, but it is currently sitting in my basement right next to my Specialized Rockhopper. Another thing I noticed is that because of the way the rear brakes on the Durham are mounted, installing a luggage rack will be a challenge, but I plan to use a large chainring spacer to maintain distance between the luggage rack and rear brake.

Put a Fox shock on mine, recommend used parts to rebuild. Trails idk, but to ride around the city hitting everything to get the it's a decent starter. Crank, seat post, seat, neck and bars are heavy. Front fork being twice as heavy as the Foxx one installed. Lose the weight, swap front derailleur and these might be decent...just the fork change made a huge difference for me.

I beat on this bike when i got it, i've already been through shifter cables and derailleurs, the shocks barely travel at all for me, and the seat hardware isn't the greatest, but it still works ok. I really hate the left trigger shifter on mine, so I'd wanna replace it with a twist shifter, since it makes a snapping noise when i try to go into 3rd, so it's technically a 14 speed as of now. (I replaced the front derailleur with a Shimano Altus 3X7 Derailleur, and it works just fine when you only use the clamping bolt.)

The entire reason i got into mountain biking was the '19 aluminum comp
Of course the freewheel deleted itself after a couple months and i didn't know how to work on bikes so my stupid a** threw it away
Im still in possession of my 2020 aluminum comp but it sits unused as its bb, fork & headset and completely keked
    Bb is stiff when rotating
Fork vibrates profusely under any front braking aswell as the headset no matter how tight cracks loudly under braking.
If anyone is in the ATX (Austin) area and wants a project for cheap im willing to hand it off!
Schwinn holds value to me for getting me into biking.

@@Elena14204 yanking the bottom bracket isn't too bad. the BB22 and crank puller can be had for like $11-$14 and is handy to have around regardless.
The hard part is that Park Cycles tigheened the hell out of the bracket, so you'll want a breaker bar to get it loose. There was a lot of swearing in my case. But yeah, I can see it ending up pretty stiff because it's got loose bearings and not sealed, and wasn't well greased in my case.

Indeed there are some out there that'll disagree Kev, but less face it...
The brand name is now known as a Walgoose rather then the actual name Mongoose, but before their singing with Walmart that name Mongoose was leading the pack ahead of Red-Line and Diamond Back and PK Riper and many others...
It was a huge mistake on Mongoose to sell their brand over to Walmart...
But in any case Kev l like what you've done with the up grades, and l believe if Mongoose were to buy their brand back and announce that they cut ties with Walmart and announce that they're re-modifying their brand, then without a doubt Mongoose will be the best leading brand again...
But that's all I have to say on that note, thanks for the great content...

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  Před 10 měsíci

Thanks for watching 👍🏻. It is appreciated. A couple of notes: Walmart doesn’t own Mongoose, they just sell a big box retail line of bikes. They still have their pro line bmx bikes and increasingly better spec mountain bikes (review coming soon on one that is not sold at Walmart).
Also note that Diamondback was big box until the past few years. I can remember when people looked down on a Diamondback at the trails like they would look down on any other big box bike. I had a friend with one we bought at DSG and it was as good as the Trek I was riding at that time. He’s gone, but the last I heard the bike was still rideable 🤓
