Maintaining My IFR Proficiency | Flying To Airport I've Never Visited | VIEWER REQUEST

- I always talk about maintaining proficiency and a day like today is always perfect to practice instrument flying skills! My ATC members chose for me to fly to an airport that I haven't been to. The one I chose was Melbourne in Florida (KMLB). It's quite close to my home airport in Orlando (KORL) but for some reason I have never been there. Until now! The landing in Melbourne could have been better, but overall I'm happy with the way the flight went.

I absolutely love how how the clearance controller was talking at a normal pace and super clearly.
murph is a homie
@@Winglets68 muchos Grassias.
He sounds like game show host. Love it.Great job
I think it was the sloth from zootopia đ. Of course it is nice to be able to hear the clearance without super focusing and half-guessing.
Murf
Melbourne ATC: â042 where do you wanna park?â
Lewis: âOrlando please.â
Itâs a fairly long taxi can I get progressive?
@@LewDixAviation Noel is learning that IFR flying is just a set of progressive taxi instructions in the air.
@@N1120A Vectors.. That's all it is haha
@@LewDixAviation You need an airplane to keep up with that traffic flow
That aerolux map is actually the coolest thing I've ever seen.
Iâve never heard a controller talk that slow and calmly lol 2:50
was thinking the exact thing
Sounded to me like the clearance controllers radio voice knowing he was going to be on a Lewdix Aviation video đ€Ł.
All clearance guys should talk like this
@@onthemark40 hehehe...thats me everyday. You got to adhere to the ABC's of flight and controlling..... Always be Cool
FAR 91.169 states that IFR flight plans must include an alternate airport unless the weather is at least 2000 ft ceiling and 3 miles visibility, from one hour before to one hour afterwards
..and thereâs an instrument approach at the first airport of intended landing.
Yup. 1, 2, 3.
Just got my Instrument rating last week. Felt so good when the DPE said, congratulations!!!
Excellent! Congrats!
Congrats!! Iâm sure it was well earned(:
3 year instructor here loving these videos, learn alot about improving my teaching style from you
Great to hear, thanks for watching!
I absolutely love your channel. I'm starting my PPL in a week, and really enjoy the CFI perspective on things and your general antics.
The guy who issued your clearance must just brighten your day immediately. Hilarious hahaha. Also, Panda Express ftw.
Ah thank you! Great to hear.. That controller is a legend.. watch me fly with him here: czcams.com/video/Jlgc8RXO8TM/video.html
I dig those maps Lew! Thanks as always for the video, always appreciate the effort and the educational value...not to mention the entertainment. đđâ
I love your videos! Perfect audio mix of your voice and ATC, good explanation of radio work, and excellent editing of important parts vs. boring stuff!
Fantastic video to see procedures and your way of going through flows. Keep these great videos coming!
Glad you liked it!
Itâs all about the little green light! Classic
It took me 6 days to finally watch this, but I love the IFR flight experience! I'll be looking out for more IFR videos, Lewis!
Already hyped for this!
Awesome video Lewis. Never thought MLB LED going from red to green would be so much fun and entertaining đ. Really learned a lot during that video. Iâm going to try that flight on Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 with the Just flight PA-28R Arrow III. Keep up the great work!!
Excellent video as usual! Iâm on flight #4 these videos are very motivating.
Thanks for making them, I shared with some friends.
Safe flying!!
Thanks for sharing!
Agreed. Good to stay proficient in actual IMC. MY 2 favorite parts of flying IMC ARE GETTING ON TOP AND SEEING THE RUNWAY WHEN YOU BREAK OUT NEAR MINIMUMS.
Awesome approaches... thanks for sharing
Hey! Melbourne is were I'm learning! Cool to see you payed us a small visit.
Interesting commentary throughout Lewis. Lapsed IMC rated but that was a long time ago now but my Jodel is not equipped and the hill at Nayland is something very different. Great video as always. Thanks for posting! đđ
Thanks for reminding me about the taxi instrument check. I do it standard for every flight out of habit, but I haven't stressed it as a separate item on the checklist for one of my IFR students. Going to start drilling it more diligently for sure.
Nice video. Probably best one yet. Great "Actual" Flying
These videos always help with my flight training!

Great video as always! NUFF SAID. đ
Cheers!
As always great content
Man canât wait to do IFR one day đ€©đ€©
Great video as always LEWDIX!!

Loved the info. just started taking lessons. Keep the content coming! And I would have went for Panda Ex.
Welcome to the clouds! :-)
That ATC is awesome!
Love to see more of this because Iâm watching very close on IFR flight
amazing videos mate. you are the kind of instructor id love to have. i drive trains but def want to fly planes. hope not too old at 54... fantastic work, u make it seem so easy to learn. Thats the mark of a top instructor. Cheers, Terry. Hampshire UK
Thanks so much Terry!
Really enjoyed this Lewis đđâïž
Great to hear! Thanks!
Thank you very much for the taxi check! Prepping for my check ride next month!
Most enjoyable and fun instructor of all times... I crack my pants laughing with your videos đđ€đœ
âșïž thank you so much man!
"Touching the Doughnut.." hehe stuff like this is why I love this channel. And the awesome aviation of course.
đ thanks mate
Chipotle. Always Chipotle. One scoop white rice, two scoops black beans, tomatillo, hot sauce, corn and lettuce and you're good to go. Simple and healthy. Keeps you alert ;)
"Good afternoon, Mr. Dixon. Just calling to check you'll be plugging Flying Eyes in your next vid?"
"But I'm flying in IMC, I won't need shades..."
"We don't care if you're flying on the dark side of the moon - and don't call em "shades"; they're Flying Eyes. Just tell your viewers clouds are bright or somet."
Hey Lew!! the Florida Aero Club North Perry Chapter and FAC Millennial Chapter are HUGE fans of yours! We hope we can catch you at a fly-in soon!
So cool to hear! Thanks man! Say high to the members for me
love your ongoing commentary...
chipoltly!!! great video!
Excellent as always
Thank you!
Good stuff đđŒ
I LOVE this channel!!!!!!!!
Another great video.
We laugh, love, and enjoy our skies within our passion đ©đ©đ©
One way these vids are helpful is bc of the little, unexpected things that happen that happen, like tower asking "say parking" when you are touch and go. Seeing Lew handle it like a boss helps make me more comfortable when you get the unusual coms from ATC
Ah thanks.. Glad you gained something from it!
Learning to expect the unexpected from ATC is one of the advantages of practicing in the system.
The Controller at ORL working ground is the best.
From Melbourne, Australia
Thank you for pronouncing Melbourne correctly
N32042. That's cool - My first Cherokee was N32054. 1974 140. I bet they were roommates at the factory.
Awesome đ
Haha the controller was just too funny. 100% sure he watches your videos!
Lewis just forwarded me this video. Muchos Grassias !
Your reaction to the controller at Melbourne was just great!
Caught me off guard haha
Give the Orlando Executive Ground Controller a raise!
Grassias....its easy money mi hermano
Youâve been to brooksville regional? Thatâs my home airport nice!
I have, many times!
2 reason why on must file an alternate on IFR plan
1. No IFR APCH at destination
2. Destination does not meet 123 rule
Remember, itâs just a plan, not a commitment
MyFlightBook FTW!
Just completed my IFR ticket 2-weeks ago. What a feeling to pop out on top :) I noticed you did not use your pitot heat before going into the clouds. Is that because you are in Florida vs. me in the upper mid-west? Thanks for all the great videos. Well done.
Chipotle only before entering a Cessna. Well flown xc. Love the content. BTW I couldn't tell if you had pitot and/or carb heat on during that IMC climb out. Thoughts?
Step down Approaches is challenging because you can still be in IMC on some levels and definitely depending on the ceilings
2:00 - Clap on... The Clapper!!
I haven't done IFR yet, but I'm thinking an alternate is needed if the ground conditions at destination are really bad that you don't see the ground at minimums. Something like that.
I remember my CFI said I should also have an alternate even for VFR - just in case a stray animal or small child caused the airfield to shutdown for a couple of hours or something.
12:07 - No Otto-Pilot. Don't lose your shirt, Lew... It'll be OK.
Panda Express - definitely. Probably orange flavor chicken... standing about.... waiting for a fresh batch to come out.
Slick mapboard you have.
DEFINITELY wait til a fresh batch is out. Too many times Iâve had the bad dry batch.
123 rule for the alternate!
Working on my IFR now. Can't wait for my first IMC experience
After doing 50-some hours of simulated, did my first actual last week. At night. Super cool!
The refurbished dash looks great!
Yes!!
Thanks! Next comes the 2nd Garmin 430W.
@@vanandaaviation3826 Iâm gonna be overwhelmed! I wonât make it off the ground because Iâm gonna be playing with both of them
You need an alternate in case last nights bean burrito dinner starts begging for an early release. đđ©
Thatâs no joke!
@@LewDixAviation Curious though, what's the best course of action if it comes to that lol. Divert nearest airport ?
@@IVANWONG1989 Autopilot on, arse out the window.. Make sure youâre not gonna cause undue harm or cause a hazard for anyone on the ground đ
@@LewDixAviation Duly noted. Lol. Request ATC clearance to dump "cargo". xD.
btw your videos are amazing. one day. one day I'm gonna go get my PPL when I'm able! thx for the inspiration
Thanks
Mate, I cant believe your not at 50k subs already đ
Trying to get there as quick as I can âșïž
I did my IFR cross country in a Piper Warrior with my CFII and loved it but it wasnât easy inside the milk bottle flying
Think the taxi check is something a new private pilot should start doing? (Not instrument rates)
Build the habit early
Definitely. Itâs such a simple thing to do, so build that habit early
Bernard Matthews turkey roast! đ
chipotle for sure.
That clearance controller was a bit too chill đ€Ł
Hahaha Heâs a top bloke!
Heâs hilarious. Always like that.
I aim to please....just another day at the office.
If the visibility is less than 3 miles and/or ceilings or below 2000 feet, within 1 hour before and after the time of intended landing, you must file an alternate. If the alternate has a precision approach, it must have ceilings of 600 feet with 2 miles visibility. Non-Precision must have 800 foot ceilings and 2 miles visibility. You can file an airport as an alternate without any instrument approach procedure if you can descend VFR from the MEA. Some airports may have their own alternate minimums or even prohibit it. That info will be found in the TPP. Of course, if weather takes a turn for the worse in flight, you can still land at your alternate if it's below weather minimums.
I know itâs a small thing⊠but thanks for getting the pronunciation of Kissimmee correct.
Hey man thanks for another great video.
Can you elaborate on what the controller told you when you landed in Orlando ? What does it mean to take the next four high speed ?
Thanks !
Bro...Panda Express / Chipotle, ugh, neither...I know you have Whataburger in Fl... :)
mark 6:20 on the vid, I'm guessing it was about 3:30 PM from my time living in Orlando haha
Lewis thank you for sharing this. I have to fly with you now so you can put a face to the name.
Letâs make it happen man!
Great as always mate but my one and only point of criticism is...Cessnaâs are more fun to fly. đ€đđŠđș
(FAR 91.169) Alternates are always required unless:
The destination has a published instrument approach and
â1-2-3 Ruleâ
1 hr before and 1 hr after the ETA
Ceiling: at least 2000â
Visibility: at least 3 SM
Nothing like a lubed trim wheel đđđ
"It's starting to break up over there"
Things you don't want to hear in a Cherokee
An alternate is required when the ceiling is less than 2k feet or 3SM viability between 1h before and 1h after the ETA
one hour before or after, less than 2k feet agl, 3 mils vis for why you need an alternative. Now give me that swag Lewis! ;)
Got a fresh box of O2 on its way
@@LewDixAviation nice! The can type from Spruce? Those are spendy....you really do love your fans! ;)
@3:26 nice
Great stuff as usual Lewis, Panda?
Any tips for keeping the gopros cool-ish and rolling for a fellow cherokee driver? Dash cam with audio in lasts about 10min before shutoff, haven't found a solution yet. cheers!
Thanks! It was Chipotle, but Panda was a few nights later haha
I donât have a solid solution for the gopro overheat issue. I use Hero7 Blackâs and have only experienced one overheat with one of them. I do most of my flying in the mornings when itâs a little cooler and recording at 4K 30FPS hasnât been a problem for the most part. Battery life is terrible though
@@LewDixAviation thx! For sure on the battery so I have power in also via audio, I suspect this is part of the issue. I reduced to 1080p 30 fps recommend by someone else but no joy.
when you're not glad with your touchdown, just touch and go đ
Requirements for IFR Flight plan alternate (basically, there are two)
1 if destination has no IFR APCH
2 if destination does not meet the 123 rule
What source does that electric sign use for ifr/vfr assessments at airports?
Great video dude! You seem like a thicc burrito kind of a guy! Chipotle is my answer!
Hahaha Yea but what about some chips and queso blanco?
I disagree. Times are tough these days--so ya got more for your buck with Panda Express :0)
Its a little late but i would go Panda Express!
you have a foreign accent I was wondering where you are from if born out of the U.S ? and possibly how you got in to aviation ? excellent video BTW!
Have you ever considered doing one of those one week or 10 day IFR courses?
What do you do when you got two radios and you are listening to weather in one radio and there is a bunch of chatter going on in the approach on the other radio?
Turn the other one down a little bit but not so much that you canât hear your call sign if spoken to by ATC. Itâs definitely not easy when thereâs a lot of chatter
Are you going to Sun N fun this year?
Also, an alternate is required when it is squirrelly
Answer to the question:
Filing to a brown airport
An airport that only has a GPS approach
Within 1 hour after and 1 hour before your estimated arrival time ceilings are less than 2,000 ft AGL with 3 SM visibility.
I have an Instrument ride in Dunnellon tomorrow. Im so nervous.
Come back here tomorrow and let me know how good it feels to be IFR rated
@@LewDixAviation Passed my checkride this morning. Damn it feels good to be instrument rated.
@@rileyshullanberger1728 I knew it! Congratulations! What a feeling
123 rule.
You're required to file an alternate when within one hour of your ETA there is forecasted less than 2000 foot ceilings and/or less than 3 miles vis.
Did that off of memory so if in wrong let me know please.
123 rule indeed! 2,000 feet and 3sm
@@LewDixAviation
Great thanks!
when you flip the vid for the break it totally screws with my IFR flying brain.
Panda Express for sure. Their Panda is tender and not gamey at all.
You legally require an alternate if you've proven to be quite fickle in deciding where to land
