    FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
    I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

      Right on! I really appreciate this feedback! My goal with these productions is to create engaging and immersive flying content - and when able , with in context of the story, I fit tasteful product placements in for sponsors (such as ForeFlight and Bose in this one). In this case, Daher was clearly part of the story too, despite not being a sponsor (yet? :).

    As a 18,000 hr. plus airline Captain, and a commercially rated pilot for 31 years, I like listening to Osama explain the what/how he handles his flying. FlightChops you are fortunate to have found and fly with such a professional and detailed oriented Private pilot. Such attention to the small details are often very rare. In my years as a CFI/II/MEI, Instructor Pilot, Flight Safety Instructor, etc. I find Osama refreshing and very impressive.

    One thing that is becoming an eye opener is in congested RVSM airspace you’ll only have 1,000’ separation but could be overtaken or passed opposite direction from a “heavy” which has a max gross takeoff of 300,000 lbs or more! Last year you may have read about a Challenger 604 which has an MTOW of 48,200 was rolled over and dropped 10,000 feet before recovering. Imagine what that would have done to that TBM! So, even though in Class A & in RVSM traffic & wake turbulence avoidance is still a HUGE subject that is often overlooked.
    I was flying into Atlanta last year in a CJ1 and was being vectored on a downwind behind a Boeing 757 about 5 Miles in trail that we were not made aware of. We felt two shudders and without any notice we entered a 45° bank & increasing even when the pilot was at full opposite aileron to prevent the roll. Although that wasn’t in RVSM airspace that was definitely in my top 3 scariest moments in my flying career.

    Good day. I love the channel and the work you're doing. I am an Air Traffic Controller with 8 yrs experience working in the Piarco FIR (TTZP) but always dreamed of becoming a pilot and this is definitely inspirational stuff. So keep up the good work. In watching this video there is one thing that really stuck out to me given my experience and I would like to comment on it for the sake of sharing knowledge/experience etc.
    At 20min49sec ATC gave a clearance to descent when ready to Flight Level 290... to which Osama only read back "290 Xray India India"..... To some this may not seem that serious but reading back an ATC clearance as given and with proper phraseology is very very important for safety. It shows the Controller that you thoroughly understand the instruction and allows him to better pick up on errors and correct you if you read it back incorrectly OR correct himself if he made an error issuing the clearance. Therefore Osama should have read back "descend when ready FLIGHT LEVEL 290 Xray India India" . Last year (2018) around November i believe i was working enroute traffic and there was a JBU going into Barbados who was ready for descent. I told him "Jet Blue &&& when ready descend Flight Level 250".. which is to the bottom of our airspace and top of Barbados' airspace.... the pilot ready back "descend 250 Jet Blue &&&" .... I thought the pilot understood the clearance. But can you guess what happened when he was descending and reached FL250?... He continued descending..... I caught him when he was passing FL240 i think or there about. Although he had already entered Barbados' airspace Immediately told him to stop descent (he was still on my frequency.. i would have transferred him if i saw he was maintaining FL250 or prior) and contacted Barbados to recoordinate. Luckily there was no traffic at FL240 opposite direct etc and Barbados ATC was cool about it... we have a relationship. The next traffic below him was at FL160 opposite direction... sigh... Cleary in the pilot's mind the clearance was not "descend FL250" but "descend TO 50 (fl50)". If there was a loss in separation(or worse) between him and another aircraft due to this misunderstanding it would have been my fault. So my fellow airmen please read back clearances properly. And if a controller corrects you or insists on getting a proper read back they are within their right and it's to avoid situations like these. Best believe from then on I repeat clearances and ask for proper read backs if the pilot does not do so himself. Safe flying everyone.

    • @osamaarafat
      @osamaarafat Před 5 lety

      There is a BIG difference between busting an altitude (which I've never done) and not repeating "when ready". I agree I should have said "when ready" irrespective but I was ready and the controller shouldn't care since he's blocked off that airspace for me. I'd like an example where not reading back "when ready" has caused a safety issue?

    • @antosdesantos
      @antosdesantos Před 5 lety

      @@osamaarafat you are correct. if i tell you "when ready" it means the way is clear. but that wasn't my point. sorry i think you misunderstood. the problem was not the "when ready" part.. the problem was the "250" part. if you say over the frequency "descend FLIGHT LEVEL 2-5-0", it can only mean descend to twenty five thousand feet (qnh 1013 etc). but if you just say, "descend 2-5-0".... just listening.....it can sound like "descend TO 5-0" ..... what takes away the unclearness is saying the term "flight level". you would agree that flight level 2-5-0 is not flight level 5-0. so when I give an instruction to descend flight level 2-5-0, and the pilot reads back "descend 2-5-0", the pilot could very well mean he is going to descend TO 5-0 (5000 ft....phonetically the word two and to sounds the same) which is not what i want him to do. did i clear things up?

    • @osamaarafat
      @osamaarafat Před 5 lety

    Sweet flying! Great landing! Impeccable video production! Definitely going to watch again just for the knowledge and preparedness of this pilot. I can tell both of you love what you do.

    Osama is so on top of his game. I've seen him mention multiple things that were accident case studies where unfortunately pilots lost their lives. I would be very happy to soak up some knowledge from him.

    Steam vs glass - it's all about knowing where to look when the pressure is on and the brain is reaching saturation point. You tend to quickly revert to instinct under those circumstances, so the key here is to slow down, be deliberate in your actions and use a checklist so procedures aren't abbreviated or overlooked. I have just returned to the cockpit after an 8 year hiatus and conducted a check flight in a G1000 C172. I found that far more difficult and frustrating (having never actually flown glass) than flying a Mojave 2 days later with a familiar analogue cockpit despite the huge disparity in aircraft performance!

    As an older pilot looking at all the information Osama is offering to share with you as a younger pilot that is huge!! Be a sponge an soak up as much info as you can from him. You are very fortunate to have this gentleman in your life, to pass on this technical information to you 😀. My generation was stick and rudder. I greatly enjoy your channel very much, its very interesting and informative. 👍

    That's a hell of a jump up by Osama. He's gone from PPL IR on a single TBM, to a twin jet Phenom via ME rating, which he had to get first, on a piston twin! He also took the CPL too. Then there's the ground school behind all of that. Impressive.
