In this video, I show you what works for me in regards to completing slow flight, stalls, unusual attitudes, steep turns and a steep spiral emergency descent to landing. This is by no mean comprehensive but it's how I have success when maneuvering. Let me know your thoughts. See you in the comments!

I've been watching your videos since I started ground school and still do now that I'm a licensed private pilot. I usually learn something useful and I just want to say thank you for everything you do to support interest in aviation!
Ah thank you for watching and supporting me!
You flying solo and describing maneuvers is a great change of pace from when you have a student flying with you, Lew. It feels more instructional (despite the disclaimer at the beginning). This is a good thing. Well done!
Glad you liked it!
I'm so lucky to have an instructor that took the time to teach me these things properly. Loved the emergency decent to land, it's one of my favorite maneuvers and really fun if it's a grass field. Can't wait to see the impossible turn... (I've done that 3 times now) GREAT video Lewis. Show these instructors how it's done! So many schools won't teach the "hard" stuff. That "hard" stuff might save someone's life!
Thanks for making this video. Going up with my instructor Tuesday afternoon doing checkride prep in a warrior. Really appreciate the steep turns!
Great video man! I am working on commercial and CFI together. I have been struggling a little with not only brushing up on the basics, but also with the "how" of teaching it. You do a great job man. Its like you made this one for me. Thanks for what you do.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks man!
27yo leaving law enforcement after a little over 4 years in law enforcement and a criminal justice degree. Aviation has always been a dream of mine and I am taking action to make it a reality. I always let the money scare me away but no more. One life to make shit happen!
Great video Lou. Ironically I've been thinking of looking up steep spiral descents to practice them in the Archer. Thanks for your instruction. I'd love to fly with you again soon! Keep up the great vids.
Going for my private pilot license next Tuesday! Your videos help me visualize the maneuvers, and I am that much more prepared when I am in the plane! Thank you for everything!!
Not a problem! Good luck!
I am not a certified private pilot, onto instrument training!!
Oops, autocorrect. I am a certified private pilot
@@nathanhoft9352 Hows the instrument training going?
Great vid as always Lew. Also an FI, but in Europe and barely a year of teaching experience, here's a few things we do differently:
Accelerated stalls, while not a requirement for PPL, i do like to demonstrate these, though for the recovery I'd emphasise lowering the nose first (unload the wings) before adding power or leveling the wings. So I'd go nose down, wings level, then add power, to show that as soon as I unload, stall warning stops because you lower the AoA.
For the unusual attitudes nose high, I think this was recently changed because of all the emphasis on Advanced UPRT. They focus now on changing the nose high upset to a nose low first and power actually goes idle. In a SEP it barely makes s difference, but I think the point is to prepare people for jets, because if you go full power in a jet when nose high, with the engines under the wings, it will actually pull your nose higher and make it harder to get the nose down. Anyway, the nose high isn't even a PPL requirement here, so it's more CPL stuff.
For steep turns, we don't use trim since they're considered a transient manoeuvre. Funnily enough I still see the mistake that students tend to leave the back pressure in during the rollout, and end up climbing after the steep turn, even when the trim was left as it was for straight and level.
I want this guy as my PPL instructor. The knowledge he babbles is more than most pilots know!
That’s very kind!
Passed my checkride 2 weeks ago. The DPE had me do a power off turning stall. I had done power on turning stalls but never power off. It wasn't tough to do but caught me off guard. He also wanted a emergency decent put straight down. No turning.
At least you did not have to remain on the same heading. You can not bust the heading after recovering from the stall. Like P+/- 100 Feet. It is easier to stall in a turn as you are not judged on holding the heading.
What a great video Lew and excellent explanations/descriptions. I remember these manoeuvers from my PPL training years ago and although I can no longer fly RW I will have fun doing them in MSFS2020.
Thank you!
Tap dance on the rudder! The way you describe things helps me the most in my flights. Ever since I started watching your videos, my flight training became effective. I wish you were my CFI 😊😊
I truly enjoy your teachings. I’m a new student with an only a few flights. I’m struggling with my training because my first few flights has had me flying in 25-30 gust winds. I’m still trying to to fully understand how to coordinate the plane and how everything works together.
Nice job! One item that would be good to see on a power out spiral is wanting to stay a little high and then having to slip to lose altitude to land. One thing I got to learn from getting tailwheel endorsement. That would be another cool video, something in a tailwheel.
Excellent my brother. A good pilot is always learning. I can never get enough of learning aviation. Thank you. It is always more to learning everyday.
Thanks man!
Hey Lewis I wanted to say thank you for the incredible content and keep it up man! I passed my instrument check ride 2 days ago and I thank you for the tips and tricks you offer in your videos. Your IFR content helped a ton so keep up the good work brother.
Nicely done, Sir.
I'm an ex-pat, too (from Grimsby!), flying from KIWS (West Houston). I recently passed my CFI initial and this video is just the ticket!
I agree with the statement below. I got my PPL in Feb 2024 and I still love watching your videos. Keep making them fun and informative my friend.
Thanks man! Will do 🙌🏻
Great video Lou, I learnt something and have booked a dual with an instructor to try those spiral dives..
awesome maneuvers...great stuff! keep up the awesomeness!! CPL training now, but this stuff is still very relevant!!!
trimming in steep turns is something my instructor taught me in the 172 after about 22 hrs in the DA40. it made them incredibly easy. Im gearing up for my stage 1 check now and solo. so im trying to gather as much input as possible for it. I got to say my man, id love to have you as an instructor.
Thanks for adding some excitement to this otherwise rainy and gloomy Monday, LewDix. Besides, I wasn’t about to watch the ATC landing video a 12th time…(it was hilarious).
😂 glad I could brighten up the day a bit
Great video. Just passed the oral part of my ppl check ride today and got discontinued for wind. This definitely will help for my flying keep it up 👍
Loved this video! It's a good review of different maneuvers plus some pointers to keep in mind! LewDix welcomes us to the sky even when we're stuck on the ground😂
😂
9:00 if you are preparing for your PPL, don't forget to establish Vy/Vx on recovery. It's not an arbitrary climb (check your ACS)
Your stall techniques are exceptionally smooth. Nice!
Thanks Lou! Good refresher for my check ride next week!
Prepping for my PPL checkride in just over a month. I enjoy watching your videos, but this one by far hit the spot. Thank you talking through the maneuvers and for breaking down climbing and descending in steep turns. Do you ever fly over to KCOI?
Great video, thanks! One thing I haven't practiced yet are steep spirals.
I like this because it's a very concise demonstration of each maneuver.
Awesome video! My check ride is coming up soon. Great review! Thanks!
Fun video. I just got my PPL in May and want to start my Instrument training soon. Could you do video demonstrating the maneuvers for the Instrument checkride? Thanks!
there arnt many new maneuvers encountered during a instrument ride, perhaps a few stalls etc with a hood on, other than that its just a hold or two and usually 3 approaches.
Great video, loved every bit of it - keep it up! I’m getting ready for my CR soon, everything helps now :)
Cheers mate!
It was 1988 again and I was training for my PPL while I was watching this! Brilliant, and thanks for saying "disoriented", not "disorientated"! 👍👍✈✈
Haha great! Thanks mate!
Drove by there just yesterday. Was looking for 670MA as I used to fly Van Anda when it was at my hometown airport. Your video's are funny and dare I say, informative. Cheers from across the beachline!
Haha great stuff! Cheers mate
Absolute genius mate, it’s helping really. 👍🙏
Love it Lewis it really helps
Great to hear
Just love your videos I’m coming to Orlando in March and I would love to fly with you. This video is very educational then the playing around with your students. I’m retired and love to get my pilots license but I’m a big guy and I don’t think I would fit in them training planes.keep up the good work.
There seem to be 2 camps with trim and steep turns. My instructor insisted no trim because it’s a quick maneuver, and he wanted me to get a better feel for the airplane. I did that all the way through to my checkride. Then there is your way with trim. I’ve tried it both ways, and my DPE put quite a pause between left and right which would have had me fight the trim to get back straight and level. On a power off stall, you only need to take the power out and hold the plane level and you’ll stall. This is more probable getting distracted on downwind. Just my two pence. I have enjoyed your videos very much!
Hoping to sit for my private in a few weeks. Steep turns are tough but adding the trim helped me a lot. Great video LD.
Great to hear! Cheers mate
Prepping for my solo stage check on Thursday and this video pops up…… nice 💪🏽💪🏽
Great timing!
What a incredible job! Thanks
Lovely Lewdix. Good stuff. 🤙
One of the best videos you've done Lew
Wow, thank you!
Yes, everything is relative, but being from Chicago, I always get a chuckle when someone in a warm climate says it's cold. Please give me Florida cold come January.
Very useful revision - haven't been able to fly for 3 months because of lockdown so it's a nice refresher
That’s rough!
Wonderful video as always. Would you happen to be doing something similar for people working on their instrument? Like holds, tracking VOR and ILS properly.
I certainly can. That's a great idea!
Watching From Australia, close to going solo. Love all the vids
Cheers mate!
Your videos are helping me soooo much…. Checkride next week
Great to hear! Good luck 🙌🏻
A great pick me up video after the 5-0 hammering yesterday. When u coming to TX dude?
That was tragic lol
Nice video. Must ask, why the right seat ? Keep'em coming mate!
Baby stalls. I was in a fuel injected 180HP Decathlon and I would pull up to stall the airplane and then kicked full left rudder to get the wing to drop and enter a spin. Fun Fun Fun. Your site picture is like brown the ground. Then you recover by power idle, Neutral Aileron, opposite rudder, stick forward a bit Then recover by pulling up but not to aggressively. Then you look at the G meter to see how many G's you pulled. This airplane has more capability than my body. I am going for my private pilot and I have spin training included. We first started out with, slips, skids, Knowing where the Relative wind is, then stalls and having the plane weather-vein in the the relative wind. Then we got to the fun part of the spins. All this to help make me a safer pilot. A couple not the sharpest pilots in the shed when not aligned with the runway, will bank the plane to 45 degrees or a high bank, at that slower speed, use to much rudder for the rate of turn ( uncoordinated) and pull up as the bank takes away some of the lift. This spills stall / spin. Not good when that close to the ground on approach.
The only thing that i would have done differently is the accelerated stall. I would have unloaded the aircraft, given full power and then wings level. Like you said, it is all about the angle of attack. Therefore, I would always unload the aircraft first. nice video though as usual!
Top job Lewis
Great video, thank you! One question - you said you rotate at 65 knots, is that per the POH or is that more of a personal choice, like a speed close to Vx? I only ask because I am training in a Cherokee 140 and Vr is listed as 48 knots. Thank you again for the great content.
Thanks! 65 is a personal choice. I add some as a safety buffer.
Very impressive extremely interesting and helpful, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
One of my instructors was gentle with his unusual attitudes setup. His thinking was it had the advantages of both easily confusing the student and also making it less likely to make them sick. I tended to agree with him after having another instructor who did the yank and Bank setup.
Funny, PS, When I was pre flighting the airplane for a flight, I found a Partly filled Barf bag in the side pocket where I was about to put my brand new phone. Gross.
@@kimberlywentworth9160 Yiiiikes
I wish the trim and flaps were easier in a PA28 - i keep unbuckling my CFI 👀 - im in UK and also those bloody US switches - are they off / on / off - also now that the ink has worn off they could be anything. Same problem in the 90s with the IBM PS/2 with their bright orange on off switch. I was always switching off peoples machines when wanting to turn it on. Thanks fully the fuel switch is well signed.
Great video as always. I have thoroughly been enjoying your channel. Question for the group, does anyone else enjoy slow flight more than they expected they would? For whatever reason, I really enjoy doing slow flight especially when I’m near anywhere scenic.
I love slow flight too!
In what type of flight do you not pitch for airspeed and power for altitude? It’s so simple and I can never remember for some reason
Made it look easy, good job!
Cheers Bob!
How can i mount my GoPro cam in the wing as you did? 2:51
Great content! Do all UK solo pilots fly from the right seat? LOL Multiple camera angles are brilliant!
Do a video like this on ground reference maneuvers!
I felt like I was back in flight school. I so need to hit the lottery so I can fly again. Nice video.
Last time I was at Executive I flew in the Harvard. Now that has some power. Have you flown one yet?
Aloha Lewis! I enjoy watching your excellent flying videos, as I recently earned my PPL wings just a few months ago! Thanks for sharing your expertise throughout my aviation journey. I am based out of KSRQ and look forward to flying with you to demonstrate my skills. Maybe I can travel to the Orlando area one day soon. “P.I.C. - O- Double T” Phil ✈️👍🏽👨🏽✈️😀
Turns around a point is the hardest for me.
Great video. Only complaint is you didn't make it when I was a student pilot!
How rude of me!
I’m ready for training when you are
I like the Piper Cherokee. 🛩🛩🛩🛩❤❤❤❤
Must be nice to fly in Florida, I'm in Washington state and my flight lessons have a 90% chance of being cancelled during the winter. I need to move to Florida or Texas!
Awesome 😎
Are you at Orlando executive?
How can I contact?
And can I do my flight training with u while in college ??
19:05 That’s wallpaper worthy
Piper Cherokee in cooler weather doing power on stalls:
1. Pilot - Pull Back....wait for the buffeting.....wait for the stall, an......waiting, waiting, waiting. Back more, more, more.. ALL THE WAY BACK!
2. Cherokee- Yawn...
Lazy eights bro ! I know it’s not a PPL maneuver but would be cool to see with a student
Rogaaaa
Wow, that Nick guy seems really cool. You should give him some free Flying Eyes since you have so many extra pairs at home :)
Yea that Nick guy is such a cool fellow! He has tons of money too so he shouldn't have a problem using my 10% discount code to get his own pair of Flying Eyes sunglasses. He would look great in a brand new pair!
2015, Lew it’s time to get your own plane!
Grow your channel around your personal plane!
That is the dream man. Been wanting this for a while!
Welp, i will use this to my end of course tomorrow
Hey Lewis, just looked in the description and can't find the Vananda Link. Definitely looking for a better rate for my rental needs. Enjoyed the video as always! :) 1:35
Good catch! Rectified
@@LewDixAviation Much appreciated! See you in the Orlando Sky! :)
Great Content! Keep it coming. I’m PP out of KCOS. Sad I missed you while you were here.
Thanks man! Watch out for my videos from there!
Have you ever used the grass part of that runway at Orlando north?
Nope.. I personally don’t consider it part of the runway due to the usual tractors driving through it whenever I land there haha.
@@LewDixAviation I wonder what the story is with that. I think that grass part is in a different county, wonder if they couldn't get a permit to pave over there. It's not even obvious that it's part of the runway.
@@JankyShack not at all. Looks nothing like a runway or extension to a runway
I JUST realized you are saying "Orlando North". I've been watching you for a long time, and I've always thought the name of that airport was "Onanoff". My mind is blown. And I feel stupid. :p Love your vids @LewDix Aviation !!!
haha that's hilarious! Well, now we know
Sir how can i be trained with u sur please reply🥺
Steep turns used to mess with me. My natural, human tendency is to alleviate g-force. It’s just how my body reacts to that scenario. So I used to descend and descend…one instructor actually got a little annoyed with me about ten years ago. I think the turning point, as it were, was learning what level of g-force felt CORRECT for a 45 degree bank. Am I feeling 1.4 Gs? That’s what’s *supposed* to be happening here, bozo. That has to be dug into your neurons in order for it to become your new natural tendency. Everyone has their little natural weakness…I’ve never had much issue with stalls, pattern work or radios…but those damn steep turns. That was my Achilles tendon early on in flight training.
I can get my PA-140 to stall on a power on stall.
power on stall the plane will not behave the same with flaps in, I would practice both no flaps and with flaps.
This helps me to not become an idiot pilot!!🤪
Great video. I disagree with keeping full flaps when recovering from a stall or slow flight. I immediately add power and drop flaps to 10 degrees. Anything past that is a majority of drag with little lift.
Thanks man! Don’t mistake me showing why you don’t drop all flaps at one time as me saying you recover with full flaps. I took 10 degrees out then wanted to show the major lift reduction if you drop the rest too quickly.
@@LewDixAviation misunderstanding what is going on in the video is the reason for the disclaimer.
I train in a 172M. Can you please show those in a 172
Certainly can!
Bro what. "orlandotraffic32042finalrunway0NinerNorth" ?? I cant understand what you're saying at the end lol 21:30 If I were in the traffic pattern and heard that I would only pick up that you're on final. Fast comms hahaha
Orlando North.. You got the rest of it, which means you did pick it up. Good job!
Is there an R at the end of “Van Anda”? 🧐😆
