"The Mysterious Affair at Styles" is the debut detective novel by British author Agatha Christie, introducing Hercule Poirot, Inspector Japp, and Arthur Hastings. Set during World War I, the plot unfolds at Styles Court in Essex, where Hastings is invited to stay by his friend John Cavendish. The household is disrupted when Emily Inglethorp, the wealthy owner of Styles and a patron of Poirot, is found poisoned.
Poirot, a meticulous Belgian refugee detective with a knack for understanding human motives, takes on the case at Hastings' request. Through intricate investigation, Poirot discovers that Emily's new husband, Alfred Inglethorp, is central to the case. Despite being the main beneficiary of Emily's will, Alfred's suspicious actions and inability to provide an alibi draw attention. However, the twist unfolds when Poirot reveals that Alfred and his accomplice, Evelyn Howard, conspired to poison Emily by adding a precipitating substance to her regular medicine, leading to an overdose, while also setting up misleading evidence to redirect the investigation.
Christie intricately crafts a plot involving family tensions, hidden motives, and multiple suspects, typical of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, which she helped define. This novel not only launched Christie’s prolific writing career but also introduced Poirot, who would go on to become one of the most famous characters in detective fiction, featured in many of Christie's subsequent works.

The first novel, the first of many Whodunits that Poirot and his little grey cells are put to the test. Not all the novels have been made into a film, but 30 are list as either directly made into a film or have been suggestive. This first one has not, and should of been, Why? 'Blue Heron'??? 🔍(Yes it was made as a TV movie with the 'greatest' Poirot, David Suchet) But a feature film on a big screen is warranted, and with Suchet as Poirot. With all do respect to Kenneth Branagh two film versions which I totally enjoyed, but the best 'Murder on the Orient Express' has to go to Sidney Lumet's 1974 film starring Albert Finney as Poirot giving a tour-du-force performance, and Oscar nominated but did not win. The entire film is 'fabulous', if you haven't seen it, get a copy. And incredible cast, besides Albert Finney you have the following All-Star Cast: Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman(she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in this film) Sean Connery, Martin Balsam, Vanessa Redgrave, Anthony Perkins, Wendy Hiller, Richard Widmark, Jacqueline Bisset, John Geilgud, Michael York, Denis Quilley, Jean-Pierre Cassel, Colin Blakely, George Coulouris, and Rachel Roberts. With all that said, I just love listening to these old school 'radio broadcasts'. Again I'd like to see 'The Mysterious Murder Affair at Styles' brought to the big screen as a major film with David Suchet as Poirot. 🔍

Yes ! Completely agree about the
1974 version of Murder on he Orient Express . The Suchet TV version with Poirot suffering from
existential Angst was just dreadful. Listen to the BBC Radio version with John Moffat ??
      Magnifique..!!

      What about Peter Ustinov's performance?

@@bahrom942 Your right on with Ustinov, I haven't forgotten, but my little gray cells weren't working that day. Death on the Nile, Evil Under the Sun, Thirteen at Dinner, Dead Man's Folly, Murder in Three Acts and Appointment with Murder all hit the mark with equally all - star casts. Would of loved to see more films starring Peter Ustinov as Poirot. 🎭🔍🥸

Maybe too late to bring this story or any Agatha novel to the big screen. Unfortunately it would not get the mass audience movies required to cover costs. Netflix should though look into reviving these wonderful Christie novels. There would be a huge audience in that medium.❤

The painting displayed is no where near, what any actors who played him, ever looked like.
Still, the painting is perfection. Dynamic.
