"The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" by Agatha Christie is a classic mystery novel featuring her famous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. The novel takes place in the English village of King’s Abbot, where Poirot has retired. However, his retirement is interrupted by the murder of a wealthy man, Roger Ackroyd, which occurs shortly after his fiancée's apparent suicide.
The story is narrated by Dr. James Sheppard, who initially assists Poirot in solving the murder. Throughout the investigation, a variety of characters with motives and secrets are introduced, creating a complex web of intrigue. The household and village residents provide a myriad of potential suspects and clues.
The novel is renowned for its innovative twist ending, where it is revealed that the narrator, Dr. Sheppard, is actually the murderer. This unexpected revelation is a landmark in detective fiction, deviating from traditional mystery norms and engaging the reader in a deeper psychological complexity. Christie expertly uses the first-person narrative to conceal the truth until the climax, where Poirot unveils Dr. Sheppard's guilt, prompting him to recount the details of his crime in the novel's final chapter, effectively serving as his confession.
"The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" is one of Christie’s best-known and most controversial works, standing out for its groundbreaking narrative technique and suspenseful storytelling. It is regarded as one of her masterpieces, often celebrated for its clever plot and the distinctive way it challenges the conventions of its genre.

The Great John Woodvine ! Magnificent voice and great stage presence. But
somehow he never quite became a household name ..? Still with us I believe
in his early 90s. One of the last survivors of a generation of memorable
actors almost all gone. And impossible to replace !
