The 10 Best Places In North Carolina You Should Move To

  • Wow! These cities are totally awesome for you to consider as your new home!
North Carolina. Mountain views, an awesome coast, lots of good jobs and great schools, and a low cost of living. It has the great smokies on one side and the outer banks on the other side. You can see why people from all over are moving to the Tar Heel State. With a population of over 10 million, North Carolina is the ninth largest state in the U.S. and it continues to grow. Some say it’s the best state in the country. I would agree.
And, the people here are some of the friendliest around - it must be that southern charm. Overall, North Carolina is a great state to call home. But, as always, some cities are better than others - and today we’re talking about the ten BEST places to live in the Tar Heel State.
To measure the best cities to live in North Carolina, we have to use two things - data and opinion. We’ve looked at a bunch of data, you know - crime, poverty, the quality of schools and home prices. Plus, we took into account YOUR opinion - that’s right - you North Carolinians have a lot to say about which places in your city are great and which are not so great.
    Let’s get started.

Been here in the Triangle for 30 years...
It is already being ruined. Cement and concrete replacing the countryside. Come on people, how many restaurants and grocery stores do you need?
The traffic congestion is crazy. I see alot more Yankee "attitudes" around here now. They leave their calling card of trash by the roads now. You never saw the trash along the roads that you see now! Give it a few more years there will be no green areas left around here. No more deer, no more owls or hawks...nature will be gone from the triangle...Sad!

2922 update on Raleigh: lived here for 37 years. Finally retired and cannot get out fast enough. Huge amount of traffic congestion. Every forested area being developed as fast as the developers can build. Property taxes and utility rates have gone up considerably every year were have been here. Housing market now unaffordable. Houses are being grabbed up at absurd prices by people from New York and California who have the money.

New Bern, Morehead City, Nags Head, and Asheville absolutely deserves a shout out. Sure the wages might be a little lower than the triangle or Charlotte but the history, natural scenery, culture, etc more than makes up for it when factoring for quality of life

I’ve been keeping a close eye on the real estate market here a long time. I gotta agree with another commenter, add at least another $100k to the median home prices in all the places you mentioned near the Triangle. Home prices are rising so fast! In Holly Springs it’s already getting harder to find a nice home under $400k. It wasn’t that long ago that Holly Springs was considered living way out in the country 😉

I lived in downtown and could walk to nearly everything I needed.....groceries, library, bars, city hall, the train station, etc. Everything was within a square mile. Unfortunately, one of those was the mall. It has just been torn down. I really miss living there, but probably couldn't move back due to housing costs. Still, I might consider renting a room in a house so I could enjoy my remaining years. Hey Nick ,Loved this Video. I'm in Cornelius in Magnolia Estates right outside of the Peninsula, but my favorite town out of all of these is Davidson. These are all of the best places to live in NC. I like some of the Ashville areas too, but it all depends. I still haven't made it out to the Outer Banks yet, it so far away 5-6 hours.

Used to live in Morrisville. I know statistically it's good but one huge downside is you're close to the airport and it's very loud. I heard planes all day and night and had to move to north Cary to get away from it. I live in a small town in Gaston County outside of Charlotte now. I really like it, especially since there is so much hiking close by. I liked Cary but it was a little pretentious and extremely expensive. One thing they don't tell you is that the schools are great, but they are extremely competitive and my friends told me horror stories of not having a childhood because they were pushed so hard to be perfect. I like being in a more "North Carolina" like town with more down to earth country folk. I am close to Charlotte so I have all that I want but it's easy to get away. The biggest thing I miss about Cary though is diversity. Cary and Morrisville attracted people from all around the world and it was so cool get to experience different cultures.

I recently moved to New Bern to be closer to my son (who is in Oriental) after living for the last 34 years between Wilmington and Leland. I have to say that I LOVE NEW BERN! It has that small town feel, less traffic, the people are so friendly and it is very affordable. I live off one of the main roads and everything is so convenient. I can go two weeks on a tank of gas! If you ever decide to do the top 10 places to live on the NC Coast, you have got to include New Bern! :)

Pinehurst is known for horses and equestrian sports, not just golf. In the early 1900’s an exclusive train line would bring the high society down from up north so they could enjoy polo, golf, horse racing and fox hunting. There was a black and white footage reel pinned to the end of this video showing that.
