- I Service Ditzy the fiat 500. Install a new coil pack, spark plugs. New filters , change the oil and clean the throttle body. I come to the conclusion its never been serviced or if it was its a long long time ago!

Yes true. Paint work the same. Think it's only been washed by rain. Needs a good clay bar and buff.
That's amazing it's not been serviced, it doesn't look neglected on the outside.. Still, that was very kind of your wife to lend you her favourite mixing bowl to clean parts in. Looking forward to the gearbox actually, could you possibly find time to show how they work in the video? I've never been entirely sure! Cheers - Andrew
Funny story. The bowl is actually the mother in laws when she was a catering chef. I'll see what I can do re gearbox explanation in next video. Thanks for feedback
Got sorted with those pesky spark plug caps mate. Got a set of spark plug cap pliers off Amazon with next-day delivery. They were needed!! Spray of WD and they pull off dead easy now. Thanks again, Richard

Interesting to see the state of the throttle body. I have a 2011 Twinair 500 and it's now occasionnally throwing up a P1120 Throttle position code and going into limp mode after having the clutch changed. I'd have thought throttle bodies on petrol cars should be quite clean but after seeing this video I think I'll give it a shot just in case.

I need to clean the Throttle Body on a Ford KA (Same car as the 500), so thanks for sharing this. Really interesting. Hopefully you have some more Fiat 500 vids on your channel :-)
You inspired me VSG, just been out and removed & cleaned the throttle body. I'm keen to get out and see if the idle is a little stronger (it stalls very easily). The air hoses looked fine, so that's good.

Had the exact same issue on a 1.2 lounge. Silver gearbox oil 🙄 or what was left. Blew main seal and ruined the whole thing. Ended up getting it rebuilt and touch wood it was perfect for 3 years of ownership
Gearbox does seem to be a weak point.
Hi, if your going to the extent changing the clutch and gear box. I think you should Chiang that Rusty old sump. Their notorious for rusting and leaking.
That's exactly what I ended up doing. Having refitted it only to then find the leak😭

Very very common issue on these and the ka’s. Final drive seal goes then the final drive bearing, all the fluid drains out drains out clutch side.
Does seem to be a weak link. It's part the reason I bought this so I then now know it's got a recon box and new clutch and should be good for a few years.
I was told it was the other way round, i.e the bearing starts to go first and then as the primary shaft starts revolving slightly off centre due to the wear in the bearing, the seal gets worn and oil leaks out. I took my low mileage gearbox (34000 miles) and took it to a place near Birmingham. The mechanic replaced the bearing while I had a full English and then i re-fitted it with a new clutch and proper Fiat oil. £350 all in, instead of £1200 from local mobile mechanic. The only bug-bear with it, is you need to remove the whole front of the car to remove the gearbox!
Air filter element is in the wrong way hence why it is crunched up on one side
Yes you are correct. Thanks for that. It needs a service very soon. So when I fit a new one I'll insert correct way round. That's what happens when you assume the person before did it correctly.
We bought a Copart special, and it’s now running clean oil after the 3rd change in 3 months. Seems like neglect is a fairly common issue.
Yes I think you are right. Most folk seem to do running repairs only.

I,m afraid to tell you the original air filter was fitted incorrectly and that you have repeated the mistake, the filter needs to be fitted into the upstream section of the airbox with the spongy mesh side inserted first.

Dont need to waste money on and Allen key. Use a bolt, with a head that fits and lock two nuts together on the Thread.

Re the clay bar on the paintwork. Try Autosmart Red 7 which you spray on and it turns 'dribbling' red solution after reacting to the paintwork. Same stuff you use on alloy wheels. Can be bought from the local mobile Autosmart rep for about £20 for 5 litres. Looks like the car is out of a film clip from the Exorcist when it's doing its stuff. Brings the paintwork up silky smooth prior to polish. I'm in the same boat as you, I bought a Fiat 500 for my stepdaughter. Been pottering about doing a service on it. Tried changing the plugs. One out of four done. The other three spark plug covers just won't come off at all. However much I wiggle and pull them they just stay on :-( Any suggestions please? Cheers for a great vid, Richard
Thanks for tip for auto smart Red. Re plug leads you can buy aplug lead pliers to get them off. I just pulled mine like mad and they did come off.

@@vintagesteelgarage Great stuff. Think you'll be surprised with the fallout you see. Just let it soak in for 5-10 minutes then wash it off with a soapy bucket of water and sponge. I've used smilair product on wheels and was impressed. Just didn't realise you can get for car paint work.
I have a 65 plate 500 everything seems fine but whenever we are at a stop and the engine is idling there is a random engine surge that last 3 to 4 seconds sometimes more the engine gets louder then settles even on a short journey it can happen 2 to 3 times at a traffic light can you give any advice thanks
If the car drives OK and doesn't miss or stumble whilst driving it could be vac hose disconnected or split. That can cause this symptom on tickover called hunting. There is a pipe from rear of throttle body to inlet manifold that's known to split. Check that first.

Hi sir, may i ask you about this 500 model question? My sister has a 2nd. Hand 500, i tried to change 4 sparks cause It makes strange movements while car is on but stopped.... When i was installing the second spark It was really hard to take out and when screwing the new one only could make half turn... I Guess last owner installed bad.... What would you do?
You can buy a thread cutter or cut a slot length ways through the thread of an old plug and use to re clean up the thread. One of these

@@vintagesteelgarage thanks for your time...but if i make a new screw with that..the Metallic dust Will go inside the engine , and isnt It damgerous?
@@e_asier it will be very minimal. Its probably only one or 2 threads damaged You could put a rag down the hole and vac out after. If the thread is badly damaged it's probably head off time and maybe need a heli coil insert.
@@e_asier I'd really need to see a photo of the thread to judge but I'm assuming its only a slight cross thread and hence not much metal to be removed. The link to the tool won't cut a new thread if completely damaged. If its only slight damage I'd take the chance the head is alloy so cutting will be soft and would soon be burnt off out the exhaust. But I'm guessing at the damage. So your call at the end of the day but the alternative is the head off.

I can't believe the state of that oil filter. What sort of prat buys a new car and ever services it?
I think some folk don't understand the need to service and just fix broken and worn parts. Or assume that is servicing.
Your throttle body is still dirty...TB cleaner is useless brake cleaner or diesel will do a much better job
I probably will give it another clean as part of the next service
