The ratings for the show had dropped dramatically , even though Family Matters had great viewership on abc . CBS offered Miller-Boyett Productions $40 Million to do Season 9 . However , CBS stopped airing new episodes following January 30th , and put the series on hiatus for 5 months . I believe this is because by this time the ratings had dropped , and since most people didn't know the show switched networks.....there were hardly any viewers . The last few episodes were burned off between June 5th , and July 17th of 1998 . CBS did the exact same thing to The Hogan Family during Season 6 . They stopped airing new episodes Dec 1st 1990 , and brought the series back 7 months later from July 10 to July 20 . You knew things were bad with ratings , with the final episodes was a christmas episode .
