In Philippines, there was a duopoly on ISP and they provide really slow internet at expensive prices. So I applied for the peasant speed and what happened was they said our place was too far from the main tower so they had to half my speed but still pay the same price and not only that, it was also capped
So has your situation improved? I do remember the days having a download speed of 256 kbps and being capped at 5GB daily.
Right now, my ass here is waiting for PLDT to install an Optic Fiber line but its taking forever.
@@shellshockedgerman3947 i have since switched to converge. They offer fast fiber connection in a more affordable price. Much better and more reliable than the other 2
@@kjbmarr WHAT!!!!! converge is more expensive compared to PLDT. I'm currently paying 1699 for a 55mbps plan, no connection fee and modem fee. converge only give 35mbps for their 1500 plan, connection and modem fee is not included.
@@borgz1352 i dont see that plan on pldt website. Are you sure it’s fiber?
Brazil has the same problem, internet service is cartelized by four companies with crappy speed and services, they're also very expensive. And guess who allows them to be the only ones that can provide internet service ? The goddamn government.
At this point it would be easier for Garnt to just change his name to Grant

Try to get internet in Germany. Its like a mission impossible. We had to wait 3 months before it was finally installed. The thing with the internet speed and the building type is also applicable in Germany. Our 10 years old house could get only the slowest internet speed, because of type of cable that was used while building. We ended up using our coax cable for TV as our main cable for internet, cause it was much faster than the old twisted pair that was used for telephone connection while the building was build.
Yes. I don't how Germany can have one of the strongest economies in the world and still mess up that part.
@@balabanasireti They mess up even more than that.... But internet is definitely a very big issue in Germany.
I don't get this thing with "old houses". I live in an almost 70 year old house in Croatia, and the internet speed I have is fine.
Are the internet cables embedded into the concrete when it's poured? Why not just drill a hole into the house and hide the cable behind the wall paneling or some decorative lists down by the floor boards?
@@2712animefreak It's a real thing and basically comes down to the quality of the wires used when building the house and connected to the house. For example, DSL internet uses your classic copper phone cable, but if the phone cable is low quality and poorly shielded then that introduces a lot of noise into the connection which reduces performance. Had a house with terrible wiring and even the cable to the house was crap, we could only get 2Mbps DSL. Similar issues can happen to the coax used in Cable internet, though those are more likely to have at least decent shielding. And if the internet is cellular based then you can tons of things like distance to the tower, radio interference, etc.
Pretty much the only way to guarantee great internet is if the house is already setup with Fiber-optic cable, since even the "low quality" Fiber-optic internet can provide performance greater than most people need.
If your internet is good in an old house then most likely the wiring has been replaced at some point, or you just happen to be in a building where the owners splurged on well shielded cable back in the 50s.

When I lived in Japan I applied for internet and they told me the phone pole next to my house wasn't owned by the company so they would have to apply to use that pole to provide me internet. It would take at least a month to do. This is already after I waited for the internet appointment person to come over in the first place. FML lol
Internet speed depending on buildings is real, you can buy a 1mil apartment in my place but the internet is shit simply because the ISP is reluctant to install better internet lines for that new area
India feels like a futuristic dream after listening to this. Called the Wifi guy 7 in the evening.
Visits my home early in the morning next day. The Internet's up and running by 11am. 60mbps connection for $9/month.
NINE DOLLARS!?!?! GEEZ
Actually the thing with the internet depending on the building is not just a thing in Japan 😂 I’m from germany and we got exactly the same answer if we can get a better option for our internet stuff
Yeah if they are using metallic phone cables, it will happen. The cables pick up more and more noise over distance and so if they're long enough, you have slower internet. I'm so glad that I got fiber 2 years ago.
Here in France they usually just offer to install the necessary stuff for an extra fee. When I moved to my oldass house (that was owned by an elderly couple for many years then abandoned for 8 more years) our internet provider had to come and drill a hole in our wall to install the modem and stuff. But hey at least I got the best plan available
@@jaksierra7 Maybe because Germany is a big country and not everyone has the same internet provider and not all internet providers use fiber? Compared to the US, we have multiple languages options especially in more urban areas. And setting up the internet is not even a hassle. Hopefully the new Japanese generation can change that process.
You do realize that most countries are not like America. Where America is very mixed, other Countries are very much in the past and still fight mixing of races. Even when America does have it's problem with racism it's worse in other Countries. We Americans don't realize that our Culture is weird in a way because of how mix it is. To be American is to be a melting pot. We have no real official Language but some might say English even if that is not true. Japan lives in the OLD Imperial World even as much tech they have, they stick to the old world ways. Cultural Changes are hard and slow. Asian Culture is very set in the Imperial World and the way they think. That means don't think outside the box. It may never change. It's also why China really had a hard time advancing their World and will always be. Right now they are even having a power struggle. They show you a new city while the world stays ignorant of their serious government corruption. America, we think we have problems? LOL You have no idea how bad it is in other countries.
@@RabbitsInBlack Except for smaller pockets in major cities and some remote rural areas, the US is a fairly mono-cultural nation as a whole. What you perceive as differences is more like variations on a theme. What made the newcomers different is almost washed out in a generation and replaced with American. Beside that, I'm not sure there is a county in the world that shoots and/or incarcerates a larger percentage of its minorities than the US, except maybe a few war-torn dysfunctional nations (not sure that is a list you want to compare yourself to). You can't really say racism is worse outside the US when that's the case.
I'm in Europe and it's if anything even better here. I also had my pick of like 20+ ISPs for my building, I did recently get forced to upgrade from 100/10 megabit, because they discontinued it, so now I'm on 100/100, and gigabit is offered, but I feel like I don't really need that, 100 megabit is fine for gaming, internet, etc. I could see paying for gigabit if I needed to upload a bunch of videos regularly, but I only upload occasionally.
Your Internet is shit though
You must live in a really good state, with decent money.
Try to set up internet in Iowa, have fun waiting 2 months.
Wow here in South-Africa getting fibre is so easy , 3 days from first phone call and they come and install all the fibre cables ect.
Took me almost 5 weeks, i had to set up an appointment to go back to the counter at Yodobashi 2 weeks after going in the first place to book an appointment for a visit fo my apartment the following week, then the guy comes to my place to set up a meeting with an engineer 10 days later......
But nope Japan is super efficient.....
Wtf is so complicated to set up a wi-fi let alone in Japan?!?
What, the technicians have to find the g-spot of Garnt's house 1st before inserting the wi-fi cables and set up the router and such?!?
"wifi cables" lol
won't be surprised if you need to do extra paperwork just to get your own router password
Fam the paper work. The company will have you manually check the paperwork and if youre a foreigner they will make you read the terms and regulations etc
@@dragoon0anime Oh god...no wonder why it's more ideal to visit Japan rather than live in Japan.
@@starandeath4735 Are you kidding me? Simply for being a foreigner?
I'm guessing it's using coax. If so, they are probably using RG59 and not RG6 cables. Our worse cat3 or cat5 phone lines.
Or the building's last mile hook up is using an old coax standard.
Coax and its 2021. And I thought the Philippines is backwards.
@@palamecianrider7385 normal coax-based internet in the UK delivers up to 1000 gigabit speeds in all areas that have it
More likely it depends on the the DOCSIS node the company being to cheap to to update the node to 3.1. RG59 technically can work if the cables are not that long or newer-ish.
@@ARTXZZ Same here in Canada. My connection in my apartment building (probably just to the node, the long run is likely fiber) is coax and I get gigabit download.
Grant really has it hard
thats what they said in my old apartment here in ohio; had VDSL2 and they upgraded the transmitter card so i could get faster speeds, but to get anything faster to the node across the street they said they would need to install new wiring or up my frequency from 1400Hz to 1700Hz which would cost $3000
I remember like 7 years ago there was a mass flooding where I lived and we didn’t have power for 2 weeks so also no wifi for 2 weeks. McDonald’s and their free wifi was my best friend during those 2 weeks.
How did they have wifi?
@@everythingpony Idk, some mcdonalds magic or some shit, they were the first to get electricity in my area of the city.
The one dislike is from the manager
Can be wires plus how prevelent usage there is but I'm in aus I get 500/40 hfc and yes NBN had issues but there getting ironed out by installing street fibre and you can install fibre or keep copper line and get 40/10 fttn or 80/25 fttc / hfc is fast based on usage in the area more people more data steamed thought.

it took me like 2 months to get Internet in Germany, insane

I had the same exact experience as Garnt with NTT West. Horrrrrrrrible experience.
1:50 the reason why I forced myself to learn how to travel in Japanese. Saved so much money.
WTF that is just lazy from the Japanese internet provider. I had fiber optics installed in my apartment and it was no problem at all. For context, this is an old goddamn building !
Now rewatching it after a year and now I know it's not only japan's problem. I was setting up my internet for like 3 weeks in Germany too, because they were giving me only phone line options and I couldn't get contract for LTE internet because best provider here runs you credit checks .-.
Relatable. Was stuck with the 100Mbps peasant option in a 13 year old flat in the middle of Tokyo, because the construction company had the brilliant idea to put VDSL cables in such way it was unupgradable.
Meanwhile my apartment in France which is 110 years old have 986Mbps download speed.
bruh, 100Mbps isn't peasant option, that's probably better than what 80% of people have outside of big cities

It took me 3 months when I moved to my new house-
My suburb here in Australia is still on copper lines. We literally have 3rd world country internet. The pain is real
This sounds horrible. I moved in late 2020 and had to set up my own internet for the first time. I just went to their website, selected an internet speed and if I need help to set up the router (would have been free for a tech to come but I was fine so I didn't need it), gave them the address of the new place and the date of the move, they shipped the router to my place and I had internet up the day it arrived.
