Does Updated Firebox Gas Burner Change Things?

  • Recently we did a comparison of two butane burners that fit into Firebox stoves, the old standby Trangia and the then new burner from Firebox. We wanted to see if the Firebox burner, like the Firebox anodized aluminum cookware, could be a viable alternative to the old standard. Sadly we felt the Firebox burner's lack of ability to properly burn propane (despite being described as able to with the adaptor) and the impact of any wind led us to feel that there were better options.
    Recently Firebox provided all early adopters a modification to the burner which made adjusting the air/fuel ratio easier and we decided, in an effort to be as fair to Firebox as possible (Great Folks) we would do a retest with the modifications installed. Watch and see how it went!

    The kind of burner changes everything every time. When I was brewing, the best burner was the Blichmann banjo burner. It would heat up 5 gallons of wort (beer before being beer) in no time. (I know,..not talking home brew here). Very cool of them to do this for you.

      @@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 Check out the Blichmann burners though, nothing touches it really. I had a three tier gravity feed brew system and made up to ten gallons at a time. When I reached the age of 55-ish, I decided I should stop so I sold every thing. I had two fermentation chambers too.

      Hey Kevin, as much as I would like to claim that much stroke I think that they sent this to all who bought into the new burner very early. From what I can tell it allows for easier adjustment of the air/fuel ratio without having to use pliers.
      Yep, I try to do my testing in environments it would be used in and the lack of wind resistance is a problem for this burner in my opinion.

    Hey, brother. Interesting test. I don't normally set up to cook in a strong wind so my experience is a bit different. We get plenty of wind here in NE so I usually look for a wind break. I get it though. I'd say if this piece of equipment is supposed to compete with a jet boil, I'd be inclined to agree with you. However, I think this burner is more for cooking and not just for boiling water. Just my 2 cents. You've given me something to consider on some future cooks. Thanks for putting this together and sharing.

      @dickinaroundoutdoors8609  Před rokem +1

      You are right, normally I would try to put a wind block. In this instance I was testing vs the Trangia in the same conditions so I wanted to test in an environment someone might likely find themselves in.
      I don't think it is a bad burner, only that when compare to the Trangia I do not think it is a cheaper but equal burner.
      Thanks for the comment and checking it out!

    Just discovered your channel because I was looking at the Firebox burner and I have watched this and the previous test video.
    My question is, in this second video, do you think the Trangia burner would have handled the windier conditions better? I know you kinda answered that in the earlier video but the FB burner really seemed to struggle with the wind in this video.
    In the UK the Firebox burner is so expensive it is actually possible to shop around and get a Trangia cheaper. Of course the Chinese knock-off are half the price.
    Enjoyed your style and gave you a sub.

    • @dickinaroundoutdoors8609
      @dickinaroundoutdoors8609  Před rokem

      Hey glad to have you join! I think all burners are impacted by the wind, but the Trangia is much less impacted and I think it does a much better job in the wind. I believe it is due to the burner head design. In my opinion the Trangia is the better burner. I did offer some other less expensive options that are not firebox specific in the comments but not sure how those prices translate to the UK.

  • @MarkKratzMC
    @MarkKratzMC Před rokem

    It’s pretty amazing that a company these days would reach out like that. Being a welder this is my opinion. Welding equipment requires a gas regulator. So does propane cooking equipment. You will notice a regulator on a propane fuel line. This is because the bottle pressure is too much and will self extinguish the flame. The only way to regulate pressure from a butane stove is the on off valve. The only solution I see is to design a proper wind screen or diffuser. Diffusers are used on jet engines to evenly distribute the fuel air mixture in the combustion chamber, acting like a regulator.

    • @dickinaroundoutdoors8609
      @dickinaroundoutdoors8609  Před rokem

      I don't always carry a wind screen as I have never really needed it with the Trangia but you are right, it would definitely help.

  • @AquaTech225
    @AquaTech225 Před rokem +3

    I believe would be a total different experience without it being wide ass open. Like one comment said. There’s no way to regulate the gas pressure besides the on an off valve. So the pressure is a little higher than the burner head can handle an hold the flame. Running wide open there’s enough pressure to start just barely pushing the flame away from the burner head which will make it way easier to blow out. Tone it down some from wide ass open. An optimize your fuel to air ratio an go from there.

    • @dickinaroundoutdoors8609
      @dickinaroundoutdoors8609  Před rokem

      Thanks for the comment and stopping by. In the video you saw that I closed the air inlet slightly on the burner and that kept it from blowing out without adjusting the bottle valve so you are right, there are some things that can be done to stop the burner from blowing out.
      However, as this was a follow up to a comparison video with the Trangia, which never blew out in the same conditions and same valve settings, I stand by my comparison results that the Firebox is an ok burner but not a cheaper but equally good alternative to the Trangia. I am a big fan of Firebox gear and use it on most every outing but for the price I think there are burners that perform better, that is all, they just don't clip into the Firebox stoves.

      Ya, I would say that it would help both burners but Firebox for sure. I didn't use one because you don't always have one and as long as I compare both in the same environment I consider it a fair and accurate test. It is like testing a tent only in nice weather and declaring it "the best".
      I would love to hear what you think of the Firebox burner and if you think that my comparison fits your experience once you have had the chance to use it.

  • @impermanenthuman8427
    @impermanenthuman8427 Před 6 měsíci

    Looks like firebox needs to just find the best remote gas burner on the market and find a way to incorporate it as a burner that fits , Soto Windmaster is awesome, pretty much most ultralight backpacker choose it from the reviews I’ve seen, but it’s a canister top burner, so you need a very stable surface to mount them on or their very tippy which is a serious scalding risk imo, so if the Soto windmaster had the legs removed and was mounted in a firebox stove with a remote canister that would be pretty sweet I would imagine

    Honestly, you're missing the point of this product.
    This burner was designed for cooking specifically to work better for low temperature cooking. Simmering and even for baking where an extremely low but consistent temperature is needed.
    the Wood Flame Gas Burner also has the ability to be used as a heat source for grilling. Your review doesn't mention any of the aspects for which the wood flame gas burner excels the most. It only focuses on boiling which was the last of my concerns throughout the design process.
    Here's a video where I grill a steak to perfection using the wood flame gas burner combined with the included Emberglow diffuser plate:

      Thanks for reaching out Firebox, I was hoping you would. Let me first say I am a big fan of Firebox as can be seen in many of my videos using the 5" Firebox and the skillet review where the Firebox went toe to toe with the Fry-Bake.
      Here is the description from the website so you may understand how it is not clear that this was designed for low temperature baking.
      "Easy to use, works with all Firebox Stove models, provides fast boil times and keeps your pans soot free. Revolutionary in three ways: 1. The air / fuel mixture is adjustable! Customize your flame, from fast blue for cooking to slow red for ambience. Also helpful for high elevation tuning. 2. The Ti Ember Glow Diffuser disperses heat for more even pan cooking! 3. Ti Ember Glow Diffuser allows for radiant grilling to turn any Firebox Stove into a portable Gas Grill."
      I am very aware of your excellent customer service but have passed he burner on.

      Thank you, I appreciate the better understanding of your perspective. You seem like a very nice guy. I wonder why you would publicly attack my product without having first communicated your concerns with myself or my customer service specialist. I will look at the listing to see how I can better communicate what makes this burner stand out from others on the market. Thank you for your feedback.

    • @dickinaroundoutdoors8609
      @dickinaroundoutdoors8609  Před 9 měsíci

      I will answer this slightly differently than the other. I have always tried to be very unbiased in my reviews and, with that in mind, feel that interaction with the company could bias my opinion. With regard to intended use perhaps I did miss the boat on this one by not reaching out but you have seen where my expectation came from. I did try the burner plate on the Omnia oven but did not get the results I had hoped for so maybe a higher burner setting was needed.
      I really do appreciate you reaching out and helping the audience gain better insight into your intent and I look forward to continuing to use your products to great success outdoors. Your 5" even made it to the arctic ocean with us! I know you may not be so inclined but if you would like someone to provide beta feedback to you on products I would be happy to do so and the communication would be open and candid.
      Anyway, all the best and hope the leg is healing as hoped!@@fireboxstove

    Not to be a nitpicking jerk, but why aren't the testers of any of the Firebox stoves on CZcams utilizing the folding aluminum windscreen that Firebox sells? *Especially* when utilizing a fuel source other than wood?
    Any test in windy conditions where the tester fails to provide some sort of wind break is a dishonest test. I know of no experienced outdoorsman/backpacker/hunter whose first priority when setting up camp isn't to make sure that the fire or stove isn't protected by some sort of a wind break against whatever direction that the winds are blowing from.
    Back in my youth when I spent hundreds of days each year outdoors backpacking; even if I was just stopping long enough to heat water for a hot drink in the wintertime; I would utilize my internal frame pack as a primary wind break, and then unfold one of those Gen 1, simple aluminum, MSR windscreens around my old school Svea 123 white gas stove which was equipped with an aftermarket brass tank cap that had a 1-way valve nipple in its center that accepted a tiny aluminum pump that allowed me to pressurize the tank prior to lighting the stove. Between the pressurized tank and that simplistic windscreen, I could boil water for a quick hot drink very quickly. The windscreen was a critical component of my stove setup, and once purchased in the mid-1970's, I never again set up a backpacking stove of any manufacture without a windscreen unless the conditions were such as when one of those incredibly rare days when there was absolutely no wind movement happened to occur.

      @dickinaroundoutdoors8609  Před 10 měsíci

      Not being a nitpick jerk at all, and a solid question coming from someone who clearly has a lot of outdoor experience.
      When I did this test I wanted to compare both burners in the same environment. Would a wind block help, yes, and I do have one but not everyone, every time may have one. This test was designed to be a comparison and the Trangia performed better in the wind (different burner design), the Firebox seems to be based on the Snow Peak design (and perhaps others) and they too get dinged for wind performance. If one burner is more dependent on a wind block than another I don't find that dishonest to point it out.
      Perhaps I should have been more vocal on that point that a wind block would have helped both burners. Even so it would not change my opinion of the winner at all. That is why I tried to convey that the Firebox was not a bad burner, just not as good imho. The Firebox is also 1/2 the price but plays in a very crowded field at that price.
      I also use a 30+ year old MSR Whisperlight with the included wind break which still performs great.
      Thanks for watching and giving the insightful comment!

      For sure and they make some great products so I am not bashing this, I just don't think it stands up to the Trangia (or some of the other options priced in the same ballpark). But it will cook and one could certainly commit to butane and take a wind blocker of some sort to manage the issues.

I wanted this to be a real comparison where perfect conditions rarely exist-if that was my test criteria I would have done it inside the garage with no wind at all. In the prior test one burner was much less impacted by the same wind conditions.
