Eric Gales is a generational talent. His command of his instrument and his combination of raw technical prowess and soulfulness is almost unbelievable. I'm very impressed with your ability to pick up on small details in his playing on first watch. Not easy to do at all.

He’s been around about 30? Yrs or so. Plus, his other brother Little Jimmy King another lefty all the brothers are, named after Albert king. He was his godfather passed at 27? Eric has persisted through a lot and never really got the accolades he deserves. Neither has Chris Duarte, Mato Nanji from Indigenous, Jonny Lang etc.

Eric Gales was quite literally made to create and play music. Much like legendary bassist Victor Wooten, his older brother taught him at an early age. So much so that Eric plays left-handed with a true right-handed guitar upside down even tho Eric himself is actually right-handed.
Eric’s brother is left-handed and Eric said he never even knew he was playing “left-handed” because that’s just how he learned from the beginning.
Victor Wooten has a great Tedtalk about music being a language and how he was a kid learning to speak with his voice as well as his instrument. It’s like the music was engrained into his vocabulary. He can pull out any note or phrase he wants at any given time. Much like a person can seamlessly express their thoughts with words, the best musicians can do the same with their music. It comes out naturally and in an instant.

Dig this (first off thanks man you're amazing!) I saw Eric Gales headline the Mississippi Valley Bluesfest a couple years ago. He was vigorously fast pacing in a circle like kids playing ring-a-round the rosie, and he kept building his solo up so much (I mean 1,000% goosebump energy here) that the only thing he could possibly do to release the songs energy was to violently punch the open guitar strings while screaming as loud as he could..."AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" for what felt like eternity and I immediately started weeping like I've never wept before. My body couldn't handle the release of the energy and it was the only natural reaction. This was 4 minutes into the concert.
From all my live shows nobody executed tension and release like the E Street Band but they take a distant back seat to our brother Eric. Thanks again and keep going Michael!!!!!

Eric Gales is from another planet. I can't tell here but, whenever I've seen him, he plays COMPLETELY inverted. The strings are going from high to low. I can't even begin to wrap my head around that. And I remember his first album, way back when he dressed like Jimi Hendrix and all.

Yup! Gales plays a true right-handed guitar upside down. He learned at a very young age from his older brother who was actually left-handed while Eric is not. Eric never knew he was playing upside down and left-handed until much later once his style was already engrained into his muscle memory
      No harm no foul lol
Plus I’m sure he can get different sounds and chord shapes that are not possible for right-handed players, along with his giant hands

Loved this, Michael. I found out about Eric through an article in Guitar World back in '92, I believe it was. His Picture of a Thousand Faces album was out. I picked it up, and have been a fan ever since. I had the incredible good fortune to see him in a little bar in Burlington, NC not to far from my home. He was home in Greensboro off the road that weekend and picked up a gig at this bar. I stood 3 feet in front of him and watched him play all night. It was a religious experience. He's super versed in the school of Hendrix, then he'll hit you with some Vernon Reid type shred, then to really mess your head up, he'll throw in some jazz chords and licks too. But it all meshes together effortlessly in a way that is totally his style. I think the thing that struck me the most about his playing was his economy of motion. It looks like he is barely moving his fingers. It makes you wonder where all that sound is coming from. And then after the show, I met him and his wife LaDonna. She was selling his latest CD. He signed it for me and took a photo. They are the sweetest people. I'll tell you, if you ever get a chance to see Eric in a small club, do not hesitate! I'll remember that night for the rest of my days!

I have never seen a band that can add more texture to just four chords than these guys. They love mixing up time signatures. Have very simple vocals contrasted by incredibly poetic and complex lyrics. Their musicianship is astounding and their arrangements are so beautiful and intimate. I've seen them live a few times in crowds of thousands and they can make it feel like a coffee shop. Hope you review them soon. They've got some great live videos at Sydney Opera House. They're catalog of great songs is too deep for me to pick one. And best yet, if you grew a beard and put on some thick framed glasses, you could go as their singer for Halloween. @@Matt-og5kd unorthodox literally means contrary to what is usual, traditional or accepted. When Eddie came out in 78 he was very unorthodox, and it wasn't just his tapping. It was his tone, his fingerings are very unique. His use of the whammy bar was completely different than what had seen. His use of the volume knob, and even building his own guitars and modifying his amps were for sure not traditional. Both Eddie and Eric do things that can't be taught lessons. Only by learning and experimenting on your own and saying the hell with tradition. So yes I think their approach can be compared.

Michael mentions Albert King a couple of times . Like Eric , Albert played upside down backwards as well . Also Otis Rush . Incidentally , the bass player in Cory’s band plays that way too.

@@jasoncarey2092 Mono Neon is a good guess cause he does also play that way but it is Sonny T. He played with Prince and also plays guitar .
