- "The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Ended" was written by Reverend John Ellerton in 1870. The opening line came from an anonymous text in 'Church Poetry' (1843).
The tune is 'St Clement', written by Reverend Clement C. Scholefield in 1874.
It is performed here by the choir of Wells Cathedral.

As a Seventh-day Adventist, I have been singing this hymn as the sabbath ends at sunset.
How beautiful .❤
Use to sing this every friday evening at the end of school week. Beautiful and faithful message. ❤
Just heard this beautiful hymn sung at the Queens funeral. Yes earthly kingdoms may pass but His is eternal! RIP our beloved Queen
Corrupt ruler
Jesus would not have supported any human monarchy as he spent his life resisting the concept but he would have loved the hymn's sentiment
The Bible teaches us not to worship human monarchy ..... The English monarchy historically got wealth through violence and coercion.
It should be questioned not celebrated

This is one of the hymns I chose for my dad’s funeral ❤️
Thank you for sharing that, Roy. 🙏
I had never heard of this hymn until the Queen's funeral. What a beautiful song, the lyrics and the music.
The Queen Served her Kingdom, her other realms and the Commonwealth well. Was instructive as this was the opening hymn.
This has been a favourite of mine since I was very young. God is so loving and powerful.
It was a favourite of the Queen also, we hear.
Reminds me of my mission school.
Especially sung at the end of day.
Beautiful hymn. As a young girl, we use to sing it at St. Matthews Anglican Church, but hadn't heard it for a long time. So fitting for Queen's funeral.
Indeed, Margot. 🙏
The Bible teaches us not to celebrate human monarchy - Sadly most Christians today have not read the new testament.
Most of the wealth of the current monarchy was gained through transatlantic slave trade. The slave trade disgusted Jesus
I remember this being the last hymn sung at our local church service at sunset on December 31, 1999.
😊🙏
been looking for the hymn they sang at the Queen's funeral.
One of my favourite Hymns 🙏🌹❤️

I'm watching an Alistar Begg sermon (Staying The Course When Others Don't), here on YT and he just referenced this hymn in passing. I'd never heard it so thought I'd take a listen, and yes it is beautiful and reminiscent of the hymns that used to be played and sung in church. A sweet find for me. ✨
Beautiful....and I know it from I was in Sunday School and going to high school .❤.
My beloved dad's favourite hymn. Playing for him 10 years after God called him. Loved and missed always.❤❤❤
Thank You, Jesus! This was the Hymn that popped put of mouth during my final minutes of devotion this Good Morning, and I looked it up. Bless you, who uploaded it. It blessed me as I blessed the Lord!
I came looking for this hymn today (won't say why).
And of course I looked for the version by Chet Valley Churches.
Bless your hearts!

This was my favourite hymn long before I discovered it was also Queen Victoria’s favourite. When Father Vic held Evensong in the mid 1980s at Saint Augustine’s , Bethlehem, we always closed with it. I snuffed the altar candles out after the service and can still smell that sweet aroma when I hear this hymn. I believe it was also played when the Union Jack was taken down over Hong Kong for the last time. Clement Cotterill Scholefield was Sir Arthur Sullivan’s (yes THAT Sir Arthur) parish priest, and while Scholefield is credited with it, it is rumoured that Sir Arthur lent a helping hand. ♥️🎶😇
Thank you for sharing this. That's very interesting about Sullivan's possible hand in the tune. 😊

I now listen to this beautiful hymn daily to bring me peace . Thank you for posting the words too. I first heard this in a documentary about the martyr George Marsh by Simon Peter ??? ( sorry, can't remember his last name.
We're glad you like it, Jan. It's terrible what awful things some people do to one another in the name of Jesus.
@@ChetValleyChurchesthe greatest horror of faith is its corruption by people to their own goals, but hymnals and choir, i feel are the truest expression of faith and divine beauty to be conjured by manking, a piece of heaven on earth, if just for a few verses
A beautiful soul soothing rendition of this hymn, thank you for sharing it.
It's A Sin brought me here , one of the funerals has this hymn
This is the hymn sang at the handover of Hong Kong on 30 June 1997.
The Queen’s state funeral brought me here
😊🙏

Do Not Delete! That one's My Favorite!!!
🤍🤍🤍
An uplifting hymn and beautifully sung but the descant destroys the unity of the song and the praise. It seems almost malicious
We're sorry you feel that, James.
