True, enough - it's an excellent point.
For those who are terminally suffering the physical death of their bodies, being called home is the only way that happens, and this hymn has clearly proved to be a comfort to those who bore witness to that suffering and pain.

Lean not on your understanding. Depend wholly on Christ. And I have seen this work for me. Am still yet to go deeper. Am a Christian but I yearn for more and more. If there was nothing bad about death, people wouldn't abhor the idea that everyone and everything will crumble to dust and fall into oblivion forever. It's just wrong. You say your children will take over, but at some point that will crumble as well. But God's will is not for us to perish but to have eternal life. Human beings are not disposable to him. That's why he sent his son, Jesus, to overcome death for us, so we may be reconciled to his eternal nature!

I am myself an atheist, but this song to me is iconic due to it use in the Battle of Arnhem. As a hotel converted into a hospital fell to the Germans on the 24th September 1944, a Dutch minister asked their SS captors if he could perform a service for the men- they refused. In defiance, he led the hundreds of wounded British parachutists lying on the floor of the Hotel in a rendition of this.'Fast falls the eventide'- how appropriate.

I pray God use this song in your life until you comprehend with the saints the lyric,
_Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;_
_Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies;_
I also once denied God's existence, yet through visiting places like Lake Titicaca and seeing creation, through learning of the logic embedded in the universe in math and science class, I could no longer convince myself of such things.
God loved you so much that while you deny His existence He sent His Son Jesus to die on a cross that if you put your faith in Him you should be forgiven all your sin and be gifted eternal life. Since all in earth decays and is destroyed, living for anything other than God and His eternal kingdom (family, money, fame, joy in any earthly thing) is vain.
      Thus the verse fittingly ends,
_Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;_
_In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me._

Indeed the very heavens and the earth wax old like a garment and as a vesture God shall change them and make a new heaven and a new earth and a new Jerusalem where the lion and calf shall lie down together in peace.
Yet beware: God shall judge "the people of this world." Yet you are of the people of this world. How then must you be saved from the judgement to come?

Not going to happen, because firstly the people dying due to politics and differences of opinion are frequently engaged in life or death struggles to stay alive. Eg Christians and Democrats are fighting islamists and Totalitarians (frequently the democrats are also islamists) in Syria. Humans are a fallen race, we murder, pillage, burn and destroy. Hence the saving message of the Lord, hence the Divine Sacrifice, hence the title “Angus Dei” Lamb of God.

Every day I am dying to the flesh. Abiding in Christ who is the vine is the only way that I as a branch will bear fruit. JESUS SAID I AM THE VINE AND YOU ARE THE BRANCHES. A BRANCH CANNOT BEAR FRUIT OF ITSELF EXCEPT IT ABIDES IN THE VINE. This beautiful hymn is truly an inspiration to me. Thanks for sharing.

When I hear this hymn I always close my eyes and start to sob mainly it reminds me of the sheer slaughter of the first world war and the sacrifice made by our soldiers not just in the first world war but in all conflicts past and present. One quote for me personally in this hymn that hits home is "the darkness deepens". We live in a world that's torn apart
I pray mainly at this time for the people of Ukraine as they continue the resistance and war against Russia hopeing that God will deliver them safely.

We sang this today at the ANZAC service. Sorry for all the soldiers that died and kingdom come as we leave faith in your kindness to fight for our country. The soldiers came to be there for us. Sorry Turkey, 🇹🇷 . Australia, 🇦🇺. and Newzealand. 🇳🇿 We are all sad you died. May Jesus and God pray for you and be happy in heaven with you. Amen. ANZAC stands for: Australia Newzealand Army Corp. but we say it like core but its spelt like corp :) Thank you again for soldiers to save us. A girl who lied about her being 17 or 18 was actually 12 and she came to war and she said “this isnt a place for games and silliness. Whats wrong with me” and she died. poor girl.
