  • In this tutorial I will show you how to clean the throttle body and EGR valve on the 1.6 16v engine (codes AZD & BCB).
    You can use this tutorial for Seat Leon 1m, Toledo 2, Vw golf 4 & Bora.
    You don't need to calibrate the throttle body after installing it back. But the battery must be disconnected the entire time you're working on the throttle body & EGR valve.
    Don't move the butterfly valve! If you move it, you may need to calibrate it with a VAG Com interface.

    Great video, it's exactly what I need as info for the procedure on my Golf Mk IV! Last summer after fixing my door lock (something unrelated) those ba****ds deliberately tore the head of one of the 10mm screws holding this pipe to the collector. I could not get the metal out so I just left it with one bolt since then. Now I'm constantly getting "EGR System
    P0402 - 35-00 - Excessive Flow" error and it seems obvious that I need to re-drill and recreate the hole somehow to tighten it properly again... Thanks to your video I'll be able to take apart everything and also clean my EGR valve as a bonus. :)

    Hello,
    For BCB engine you can clean all throttle body without VAG COM adaptation by software. When you will drive around a few kilometers your throttle will be adaption automatically by ECU. I tested this solution.

    • @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd
      @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd  Před 6 lety

      you're right, for most cases... that's what I said in my video, I never had that problem. but if you read the comments for my both "throttle body cleaning" videos, you'll see that some people had problems with the throttle body after cleaning it. maybe they moved the interior valve, or something.. the removal/cleaning procedure is similar for other 1.6 and 1.4 l VAG engines as well.
      I don't take responsibility if something goes wrong during the cleaning process, or if the throttle body needs calibration. that is way I said - the throttle body MAY need calibration.

    Hi Sorin. Your videos looks very useful, thanks for shearing. I have problem with my mk4 1.6 16v. the same motor you showed in the video. After 5-7 sec starting on the morning the engine has lots of vibration(shaking) for at least 5.6 sec and than it works good. When I start moving, in the first to third gear it has no power as before. Do you have any idea what the problem is? The engine light is on too, because of the O2 sensor first lambda even I have replaced it. I have checked it to many mechanics and still the same situations. What do you think?

    • @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd
      @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd  Před 6 lety

      hi. if the engine shakes at startup, usually there's a misfire on one of the cylinders. that could be a faulty spark plug, ignition coil or injector. but if the "check engine" indicator is on, it's a deeper problem. the lack of power probably comes from an incorrect air-fuel mixture. most likely a sensor delivers incorrect information to the on-board computer - o2 sensor, MAP sensor or faulty catalytic converter. you need to scan it with vag-com, to check if there is a misfire, on what cylinder and what components are faulty.

    Hi Soren. Thanks for the video! I have a question - i broke off the head of one of the bolts for the pipe under the throttle body - is it dangerous to leave it like that ? Do you think i can take it out somehow?

    • @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd
      @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd  Před 7 lety +1

      hi. that is not good.. it's a little dangerous for the engine, because the pipe it's not sealed properly. the engine can take false air (with dust) through there. the engine idle may fluctuate.
      you can try to drill a small hole (or 2) in the rest of the bolt. you need a good quality drill bit. then force something in the hole, like a screwdriver, and unscrew the bolt.
      or you can remove (or "eat" through) some plastic around the bolt, about 2-3 mm. then grab it with pliers and unscrew it.

      @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd  Před 6 lety +1

      hi. you need to disconnect the battery, so the onboard computer will not know that you unplug the throttle body. I removed the throttle body from my car 3 times. I also helped other friends to clean it. I followed all the steps and didn't need to calibrate it. but I noticed some people commented, that they needed to calibrate the throttle body after cleaning it. my throttle body did decalibrated from other reasons... so I can't assure you 100% that it will not need calibration. it also depend on the engine code, other types of throttle bodies may need calibration. it should not decalibrate, but you will do it on your own risk... if it decalibrates, you need a vcds interface to calibrate it.

    • @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd
      @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd  Před 5 lety

      hi. these errors can occur for several reasons. if you have a cable throttle body, you need to check the cable when the throttle is closed. the cable needs to have a bit of a slack in it. another common problem is a fault in the wiring, plug, connector at the throttle body. you need an auto electrician to check them. or the least common reason, a fault inside the throttle body. I think the problem is in the wiring/throttle connector (this is just an opinion).

    Hi, many thanks for your videos! I have the same Leon 2003 1.6 16v with 170k km. Mine is consuming quite a lot of oil but I dont see it leaking anywhere. Do you have any ideas what could I check / replace? Breather filter oilfilter, what could affect to oil consumption?

    • @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd
      @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd  Před 7 lety

      hi. you can try another type of engine oil, with a higher viscosity. for example if you are using 5W30, when it's time to change the oil, try 10W40. you can try MOTUL, it's recommended for this engine. then compare how much oil is consuming in the same interval.
      remove the ignition coils, check if the coils or the spark plugs are covered in oil. the rocker cover gasket may leak, and the oil is collecting there. I saw this problem on my engine and other engines.
      you can clean/degrease your engine bay, especially the oil pan. take the car for a ride around the city, rev the engine a bit. then check the oil pan gasket and other gaskets with a paper napkin. if it's leaking, even just a drop, in time it will accumulate.
      check the oil filler cap gasket, I've made a video about it...
      ..or the piston rings may be faulty and the engine it's just burning the oil...
      mine is consuming about 300 - 400 ml of oil in 9000 km.

Cleaning also the egr valve rpms will become better? I thought also that the adaptive parameters have to refresh for some km, it’s possible? Thanks!

      hi. after you drive for a few km, the idling revs will self adapt. but there will still be some small variation of the idling, when you activate different loads on the engine, this is normal. this is not affected by the EGR.

Cam cat anume trebuie rulata? 10 - 15 km sau 50 de exemplu? Sau pana observam ca s-a stabilizat, poate si dupa 80 km?Multumesc, Sorin.

    • @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd
      @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd  Před 7 lety

      hi. did you disconnect the battery? if the EPC indicator persists, there could be a problem with the throttle system (pedal, wires, on-board computer, throttle body). if the idling fluctuate, the throttle body most likely needs calibration with a VAG-Com interface. it happened to my once. if not, there could be another problem with the engine, that affects the throttle body. in this case you should check the error codes with a VAG-Com interface, before you try anything else.

    • @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd
      @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd  Před 6 lety

      salut. prima eroare P0301 inseamna ca nu ai aprindere pe cilindrul 1. daca ai schimbat deja bujiile, fisele si bobina, mai sunt cateva piese care pot face probleme. una din ele e sonda lambda. ultimele 2 erori indica o problema cu a 2a sonda lambda - cea de dupa catalizator. mai exact nu functioneaza rezistenta de incalzire a sondei. sonda lambda trimite informatii corecte computerului de bord, doar cand ajunge la o temperatura de cateva sute de grade Celsius. cand pornesti motorul, sonda e incalzita de o rezistenta interna, pentru a ajunge mai rapid la temperatura la care functioneaza corect. dupa ce se incalzeste motorul, sonda e mentinuta calda de gazele de evacuare. daca ai probleme doar cand e rece motorul, inseamna ca nu mai functioneaza sistemul de incalzire al sondei (s-a defectat, sau e o intrerupere in cabluri). daca face probleme si cu motorul cald, e posibil sa fie sonda defecta. mai sunt si alte componente care fac aceasta problema: injector infundat sau defect, senzor de aer, compresie slaba.

    • @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd
      @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd  Před 7 lety

      hi. if the EGR valve it's just stuck, after you clean it, it should work fine. but if the EGR it's faulty, you will need to replace it. either way, the error should remain stored on the on-board computer memory. but it won't affect the car in any way.
      it is recommended to delete the error, after you clean the EGR. drive a few days. then check if the (same or other) error reappear. this way you will know if the problem was fixed.
      if the EGR is working fine, and you don't delete the error, after a few months the error may disappear. I had a comfort module error, that was keep reappearing. after a few months it just disappeared by itself.
      hope this helps...

    why is it getting so dirty after 20 k klms is it because it is recirculating the dirt around the pipe work and to stop pollutants getting into the air we breath ,, just woundering thats all ,, good video Sorin

    • @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd
      @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd  Před 4 lety

      hi. the recirculated exhaust brings ash and other stuff back into the throttle body. this dirt sticks to the throttle body and intake manifold with the help of the oil fumes and crankcase gases coming from the carter tube. there is a tube in the back of the engine air filter, which brings these gases back into the throttle body. if you see the air filter colored with a brawn substance, it means that the engine is begins to be worn and it produces a lot of these gases.

      Salut. Un spray de curatat carburator/clapeta de acceleratie ar trebui sa fie de ajuns pentru a curata clapeta de acceleratie si EGR. sprayul curata doar depunerile pe partea exterioara, clapeta/valva. daca sunt probleme cu partea interioara si anume circuitul, motoras, rotite, degeaba folosesti mai multe sprayuri sau sa le lasi in benzina, ca nu se repara. curatarea e doar pentru intretinere, daca e deja defacta piesa, trebuie schimbata.

      hi. I don't think that's the reason for the error. I think the EGR valve is faulty, it doesn't close properly, or it remains blocked on "open". ether way I suggest you first replace the EGR valve support, clean the EGR, delete the error, drive it a few km outside the city and scan again. if the error persists, I think you need to replace the EGR.
