This is how Hobbyzone describes this plane Micro Trainer Plane:
"Any skill level. Any terrain. Anywhere! Introducing the Arrows RC 620mm Pioneer
Modern beginner pilots are often faced with a daunting task: learning to fly in a limited space without an instructor. For those pilots, Arrows RC has the answer! Introducing the Arrows RC 620mm Pioneer- a Micro Bush Plane with BIG performance!
As a proper "all-rounder", the Pioneer has a classic high-winged tail-dragger design- allowing for predictable handling characteristics. The pre-installed ESC and flight control system eliminates the need for complicated wiring harnesses and setup.
Switch between stabilized and optimized gyro flight modes and the Pioneer will suit pilots of any skill level. Oversized wheels and robust EPP foam construction allow for rough-field operations- just plug in the battery, let the gyro calibrate and fly!
With all the exciting aircraft Arrows RC is releasing, there's no better way to start than the Arrows RC 620mm Pioneer!"
This is how Horizon Hobby describes the E-flite Turbo Timber Ultra Micro RC Bush Plane:
"The E-flite UMX Turbo Timber updates the original Timber with new features and more power - resulting in extreme aerobatic performance and incredible STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) capability in addition to legendary fly-anywhere versatility.
Scaled down from the legendary E-flite Timber 1.5m, the E-flite UMX Timber was the iconic ultra micro model best-equipped for exciting STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) adventures and beyond…until now. The UMX Turbo Timber updates the original design with a modern turboprop-styled nose and 3-blade propeller, plus a higher-power 3400Kv brushless motor. When using the same 2S 280mAh batteries, this Turbo version provides even better STOL performance with shorter takeoffs and faster climbs. You'll also enjoy extreme aerobatic capabilities and have the power to hover, then climb out vertically. In the hands of experienced pilots, the UMX Turbo Timber can be flown in more places - even off of water with the optional floats (sold separately) - and in smaller spaces. Plus its high-wing configuration and exclusive optional-use SAFE® Select technology provide plenty of stability to make the UMX Turbo Timber a great choice if you've mastered flying at least one model before. This makes it a model that pretty much every pilot, from low-time to long-time experienced alike, should own because everyone will enjoy flying it!"

Hey GB, very nice comparison of the two planes indeed! Basically you can't go wrong with either or any beginner plane but on your starting point or preferences! Thumbs up! Cheers GB!
Well said Fred! HH officially doesn’t recommend any of the Timbers as a trainer, but the market has shown it is possible. The UMX TT is one of my favorite planes ever and my Pioneer is a loop making machine. Btw, I am sorry I wasn’t able to participate one your stream tonight. I always have fun when I do 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Great comparison! One thing I dislike about Horizons UMX line is they won't decide on one connector, I switched all of mine to the red jst or even xt30 if the plane has enough space.
Thank you! It seems like things are trending towards the red JST for these UMX planes, but we shall see what the future holds. I hear that the next two weeks will include some new releases (I have no clue which planes), but they may give us a sense if the direction things are trending moving forward 👊🏻💥👊🏻
@@GBLynden can't wait to see the next releases, I'm on the fence with buying some current ones or waiting to see what comes out next.
I liked this week's release, but may need to wait before I can pick one up. I have some other stuff cooking first 😎
@@A.M.-RC I wonder if "they" change the battery connector just to sell batteries.
@@I_am_archie could be, for a beginner it might be intimidating to change a battery conector. I prefer to use one size battery in as many planes as possible.
GB , i dont have arrows Pioneer, but my umx turbo timber is a hoot to fly, Sunday evening full flaps slow burn, shoot i fly fly full flap more than anything
The UMX Turbo Timber is a hoot and one of my favorite planes to fly, ever! I hope you are well my friend 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Great job on the comparison of these GB!
Thank you David! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
very cool sir
Thank you Captain 👊🏻💥👊🏻
I trained myself to fly with the umx sport cub s2. The little blue and white one. It was just like the arrows plane. Came ready to fly. It's the one that got me hooked. Almost 100 plane's in the hangar now and I think I have a addiction 😳
Oh yeah! You do for sure, but luckily you have one heck if ab RC Hookup 👊🏻💥👊🏻
nice look at both choices ! have a good one...
Thank you JCB and I agree! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
I love my Timber!!
Me too! In my top 10 of planes all time and in the top 3 for best UMX’s ever 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Great information GB👍🏼
Thank you very much Michael! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
The evolution is very good too but I personally like the umx timber x that thing is a monster! Love the leds too❤✌🏽
I love my UMX Timber X too. It is such a great little plane. The new UMX Turbo Timber Evolution is even better though 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Great video, thank you brother.
Thank you Bro! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Thanks for sharing! 👍
Thank you Gary! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
BAAMMM!
Hope Your little Family are Ruling.
Beauty GB.
Thank you Jono! We just got her first crib tonight. Things are wild in a great way over here 👊🏻💥👊🏻
One benefit of the pioneer (imo) is that the reciever runs frsky protocol so you can bind it to your tx16 or other d8 compatible transmitter. And that it uses real servos instead of the noisey linear servos. The pioneer was way more durable than any other eflite umx iv had. As my first plane I was able fly the pioneer inverted pretty quickly in my rc plane journey. It's a really fun plane. Not the best looking but possibly the best flying
I love the Pioneer and that is a great point about the radio. I am a Spektrum guy, but I know not everyone is or wants to be 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Great comparison GB , both are great flyers. Jeff in LA USA
Thank you Jeff! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Ryan, that’s Cool. Straight to the point on your reviews. Both look to be excellent planes to learn on. Love videos like these. 👊💥👊
Thank you Brad! I am working on some really cool things in the pipeline that I can’t wait to show you when it is time 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Thanks GB
The Pioneer will be one of my first trainers
Awesome! The links in the video description helps the channel so I can keep making helpful content like this. Also, let me know if you have questions when you get yours 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Intresante amigo.
Thank you my friend 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Very complete review. Thanks.. I have a mess of these little high wing micros.. But, not the Pioneer. Looks like a wonderful plane to help a beginner get going.. Thanks, - Will
Thank you very much Will 👊🏻💥👊🏻
It is! Particularly for learning take offs and landings. The big tires and beefy wings make it take off quickly and land safely. The EPP makes it structurally robust and the surfaces, especially the ailerons are pretty tamed. With a bit of surgery, the wing can be made detachable for transport and for getting tremendous aileron throw later on. It's weakest part are paper thin rudder and elevator linkages. But those are easy to replace (and should be before handing it over to a beginner). It's a lovely plane after all, and a stunning looker after sanding and painting with acrylic paint.
Thank you!
Nice one 🍷
Thank you Brother 👊🏻💥👊🏻
I do not like SAFE either except when I can think quick enough to activate it when I lose control or orientation. I have watched friends fly the UMX Turbo Timber and it is a great flyer and quite fun to fly. It would not be my choice for a trainer plane.
It is a good tool for sure, when used as you prescribed. One thing I have learned about recently is that when you are in SAFE, you should be in high rates. Of course, I learned this after I recorded this video lol
I love my arrows pioneer however the roll rate was horrible so I extended the ailerons and now it's a good as a umx turbo timber x! 👍🏼
Great work on that Mod! I love both of these planes 👊🏻💥👊🏻
@@GBLynden I swear it woke that pioneer up big-time! Using a very thin but strong wire through the new piece of aileron right out the end of the wing and alot of glue lol✌🏽
That is great 😎
@GBLynden's RC I have a question man I fly fpv quadcopters and I'm looking for a radio that I can use for both quadcopters and planes and I really don't like the radiomaster tx16s it's too big I have the tx12 and it's perfect but has that crappy cc2500 chip so I was wondering if the new radiomaster boxer 4in1 would be good for planes with flaps retracts ect? Only because I haven't heard of anyone using it for rc planes everyone is using the nx radios
Full heart to pioneer
I love them both, but I can see how someone would prefer the Pioneer 👊🏻💥👊🏻
👍
Thank you Tim for being first 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Hi GB. Nice video. I personally wish the Pioneer came with a BNF option although I realize it may be difficult to make the micro receiver/esc compatible with sufficient different radio protocols to work for nearly everyone's radio setup.
I have heard this is a Frsky protocol, but I have not been able to confirm. The TT is one of my all time favorite RC Planes and in the top 2 for favorite UMX of all time. Thanks for watching and commenting 👊🏻💥👊🏻
US version is Frsky D, sub D8. EU (at least German) version has a different receiver chip with unknown protocol (seems to be Zigbee related judging from the chip), tried all protocols on the Zorro 4-in-1 but none would bind, so changed the board to US/D8.
Thank you very much for that feedback Mörtel!
I bet I can crash both'em, no problem. 🤣🤓😂
Hahaha while I believe that, I also believe you could fly the crap out of both of them too 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Aahhahahaha!
Airhammererer OUT!!
It's a damn shame the micro market has died. Back in 2015 they has a slew of micros that sold well. Especially horizons umx warbird line we would talk to months about. Past 4-5 years. It's been cricket's.. sad. I used to spend a lot of money in the hobby. Not now.
Thank you for your comment! I have been seeing posts indicating folks like us will be happy in 2023 as they continue to full back out their UMX line, among the rest of their product line. I am very optimistic and plan to review items meeting that criteria 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Price wasnt mentioned. The Arrows is only $10 more, with the radio included.
I only owned the UTT and its great, but I definitely found the foam very fragile. I think I broke the hatch the first time I tried opening it. I only crashed it once, and it was beyond repair. Its a fantastic flyer though, and the flaps are fun even for a beginner. They are probably also what caused it to stall and crash.
Personally I dont think UMX are great for first planes or trainers. They are too small and too light weight. I think something in the 1.2 - 1.3m size is better. A Tundra, Bigfoot, PA-18, Apprentice, etc. My pick would be a Prime Tundra. Even without a gyro it will level and land itself.
Great write up Sno! I agree with you across the board. The only rebuttals are that prices change and this video with be around for a while. The price point unfortunately often correlates with the size. Most noobs are going to invest less on a first plane than they will on a cool plane. I also learned to fly on the 1S Hobbyzone Champ, so I may be biased toward them as trainers. Goodnight sir 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Is there a set of floats I could by for the pioneer??
Boy, I am not aware of any if there are some. I wish I could be of more help 👊🏻💥👊🏻
You know the radio protocolo of the Arrows Pioneer?... Thanks.
I do not, but I am working on trying to get an answer for you 👊🏻💥👊🏻
OK. Thankyou.@@GBLynden
What do you mean by ‘it’s a lot less muted”.
I just meant that it doesn't take over to the level that SAFE normally does. I hope that helps!
Can you bind the arrows to the radiomaster transmitter??
That is a great question and one I do not know the answer to as of right now. I will see if I can find that out though 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Yep. It's FRSky - I can't remember if d8 or d16 so run through them all. Then post it here for all the Horizon Slobby folks who might want to try a better and more cost effective product in both planes and transmitters. 😉
Actually it is/was FRSkyX - D8 but check out Terramoto's posts around #181 on the "RCGroups Arrows Pioneer 620mm RTF" thread.
FrSky D8 outside Germany (supposedly outside EU since D8/D16 aren't allowed anymore). US version binds just fine.
@@DIY-Morti Yep, that makes sense. Probably the European versions may now use FRSky D16 LBT firmware.
Unfortunate the UMX Turbo Timer you tested no longer is sold. They now have an upgraded version............
Hey Keith! I appreciate the comment. The good news is I have the new one and will be dropping an unboxing tomorrow, if it all works out. Once I get some flights on it, I plan to do another video just like this one 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Some observations and points of interest - #1. You MUST be in HIGH RATES when using SAFE "so it does not take 40 years to turn the thing around", in your words. #2. The foam on the Arrows Pioneer is CHEAPER, OLD SCHOOL to increase PROFIT MARGIN with the factory that was commissioned to build it. #3. FLAPS is a GREAT thing for advancing AND more ROBUST LANDINGS and TAKEOFFS as well as AEROBATICs - again as a person ADVANCES. #4. BIGGER is BETTER when it comes to flying. #5. The Timber is AWSOME on floats with DESIGNED QUICK change for wheels to floats NO MODIFICATION involved and the Pioneer does not have that capability. #6 - The Pioneer has those. IMHO, PESKY,CHEAP struts. #7 - For a BEGINNER, that person should start with the BIGGER brother of the Timber or the BIGGER Bigfoot or Trekker before either one of these - IMHO -and because or that, a LESS COSTLY Spektrum COMPUTER transmitter that stores MANY planes AND gives you a PUSH of the button to BNF with SET UP and THROWS PROGRAMMED for that PARTICULAR plane and is on $30 more than PNP BUT you get a $70+ receiver INSTALLED and TUNED, as I mentioned, for that plane. I have been FLYING and INVOLVED with the RC PLANE industry for 33 years so this is what MHO is based on. BTW, I have TWO Timbers - one on floats and the other on wheels - I fly the one on floats right behind my house on a private lake AND I also have a UMX Timber X on floats and also fly it on the lake. I have the BIGGER Timber Evolution AND Timber x - both on wheels - that I fly at the field OR at the park. Just some additional "food for thought". Again, I preface MHO on my years of experience involved in the RC plane hobby and industry. 😉👍
#2...Actually the EPP foam used in the Arrows Pioneer is MORE COSTLY than the EPS beer cooler foam used in Horizon Slobby's UMXs (EXCEPT their 2 Ultrix planes) but about 30% heavier. (The penalty a "Beginner" pays for the insurance against the first time his toy hits something being big sadness day!)
#7..."Bigger is better for Beginners!" - I'm with you mate! I taught all my kids to drive in my Kenworth road rig. No way I was letting them out on the highway in no toy Daihatsu before they can handle a REAL vehicle!
Also "a LESS COSTLY Spektrum COMPUTER transmitter" is a great idea for a kid running a paper round (do they still have them in America? - maybe a drug run?) for pocket money. For about 3 times the cost of a similar featured Multi Protocol Radio (that will run Spektrum gear AND something like 100 other breeds) they will be securely locked into the overpriced Horizon/Spektrum environment. That should keep them SAFE within the One True Fold, Brother re3605. 😜😉
Nice to see that your edit indicates that it just may be possible for you to see the light, abandon those False Prophets at Horizon Slobby and be welcomed into the One True Faith, Brother re3605!
Hi there Re! I have knocking out weekend tasks, so I cannot give you a full and detailed reply at this time, but I do want to point out that I am a HUGE fan of the UMX Turbo Timber (possibly the best UMX ever) and HH's Spektrum series radios. I would not be here without them as I learned to fly on the Hobbyzone Champ 100% on my own and quickly caught the bug. After I realized it was for me, I invested in a DX6i and the rest is history (Over 100 Planes Later) here we are on that journey. You are 100% correct that to use SAFE as intended, the pilot should be in high rates (another complexity, like flaps, a complete noob should NOT have to deal with on their first plane). Note that while bigger does fly better, HH has not recommended any of the Timbers as trainers. They have a deep bench of other trainers I plan to compare trainer to trainer to this Pioneer at some point in the future like we did here. I also want to add that most of my planes, all of my receivers, and all of my radios are from HH. I have even invested in Smart Chargers and Smart Batteries.
The reason for this video is a lot of people have asked me about these two and how they compare as trainers, so I made this video to answer that question the best I could with a sub 5 minute video. After I shot the video, I realized I missed a few things like floats and other items you mentioned in your detailed comment.
I appreciate the time you and theoztreecrasher took to comment on my video.
I wish you both a great weekend with wonderful flying weather 😀
