Lots of folks asking where I got the mower stand: amzn.to/2XXiF5E (I have an older version - this one is updated)
No matter how well the mower cuts I always think a double cut lawn looks best. Thanks for the video!
I just picked up a Honda HRX. I have Bermuda grass and the lower cut setting sealed the deal for me. Thanks for the video Allyn.
The value of all the information you share is obviously enormous, but what makes me like you and your channel the most is that you plug so many other channels and help grow the community. It’s awesome, thank you!
thanks bro! As Castleberry would say "my brothers and sisters, from other misters"
Thanks for being so detailed and doing part 2 and owning part 1, i.e. wasn't the best you could give! Great quality!
Awesome job. Been waiting for this review since your original Recycler vs Super Recycler video with Jake.
Great content for both mowers. You sold me on the Honda for maneuvering tight spots which is my biggest gripe with my small lawn
Hello Alan for the time spent explaining the differences between Toro and Honda.
You are very careful and meticulous in dealing with the topic ... much appreciated.
I thank you and greet you from Italy.
See you soon!
Marcello
Ciao Alan per il tempo dedicato a spiegare le differenze riscontrate tra Toro e Honda.
Sei molto attento e meticoloso nell'affrontare l'argomento...molto apprezzato.
Ti ringrazio e ti saluto dall'italia.
A presto!
Marcello
You can still walk forward with your trimmer but you just need to change the direction you rotate around your yard. For example, move clockwise instead of counterclockwise or vice versa. It all just depends which way the string is rotating - into or out of the beds.
Walk backwards lol... exactly what I was thinking when he said that. These ppl have been bashing him since "the move", eventually all the negativity does get to a man!
I was going to say the same thing if you walk backwards clockwise it is the same rotation as forward counter clockwise.
Grass Daddy shout out! I like that you guys all support each other! Thanks for the comparison vid Al!
Old Cub Cadet mower just died on me after 10 years. Looking at one of these three for our next purchase. I appreciate the review almost three years later!
Loved the video and shoutout to Ryan Knorr
I own a Ariens Razor 21 and love it. Mulches great. Thanks for the video
Toro looks like it did the best. The most important thing I learned from the video is that I need to sharpen my mower blades.
Nice Allen, appreciate your time and effort for this video. 👍👍
thank you!
You can also tilt the head of trimmer to direct the clippings!
The best part of this video was the music!! Oh and the lawn info, my 42 yr son put the blade wrong on my push mower, so much for a supervisor helping his mom.;)
Good stuff, Allyn! I’m looking forward to a future overlap video and discussion. Personally, I think speed and overlap are equally important!
I have a hrx537 and super recycler
I set the back wheels higher than the front when mulching.
Makes a big difference.
Love mail box! Yes, I saw his video too. I am a backward walker while I trim, I also walk forward too, Lol... On part one of your review I wanted to say you are correct when it comes to the Honda leaving a strip of grass uncut. My Honda does the same thing. I don't know why it does that. Finding it annoying as I'm done mowing and looking across the lawn and find a strip of grass the mower hasn't cut. Now I look out for it. Other then that I enjoy my Honda. Love your video! Keep on posting them.
Awesome thank you !
Smooth vs level is a great point. I do commercial floors for a living, and it’s the best way to describe to someone the point of floor prep...to make the floor smooth, not necessarily level. A lot of old slabs would need extensive work to be “level”, and that’s a whole other process.
I appreciate the comparison. Mulching is very important to my and very satisfied with out Toro Super Cycler although I am sure Honda is a great mower.
Just picked up a Toro super recycler self pace with the Honda engine. She’s a beast. Highest setting is measured at 4” for me- which is the the height I cut my st aug so it worked out.
i start with trimming/edging and then mow. this keeps the lawn clean of the longer grass clippings (especially when the lawn is overgrown). this works better if bagging.
Triming, blowing, mowing and then blow again. I know that's a lot of blowing going on, lol
I noticed your stop pin on the lawn mower lift isn’t in all the way a lot of times. Great video!
First Aussie 😁 Informative video Al, The Lawn is dominating your neighbours. I think some of your neighbours have lifted their game since you first moved in but you still dominate. 😁👍👍
Toro is a mower company
Honda makes great engines and motorcycles.
I’d get a Toro mower with a Honda engine.
I’d get a Honda Gold Wing with a Toro lawn striper too.
Lmao!
Doesn't the super recycler comes with a honda engine?... mine does
some models do, others still come with a B&S mower.
Ok thanks, didn't know this...the more you know the more you mow
Love my Toro with the 6.5 horsepower Troy-Bilt motor
There's something about that TimeMaster. Good to know about the Honda drive system. That could be useful for me, though I like the look of the cut from the Toro more.
Good job on the review and video man.
Thanks !! 👊
I have the new Honda hrx217 200cc. Great cut. I do put back wheels one notch lower then front. Makes better cut for some reason. Can't go wrong with either mower.
When trimming with a straight shaft trimmer (spins counter-clockwise) move to the left, and with a curved shaft trimmer (spins clockwise) move to the right.
I could never get a good edge with a string trimmer. Now I use a edger, it's just as fast and looks better. Just my opinion 😉
Kurt Rodammer I think Allyn does use an edger, once or a couple times a season. But does general cleanup with a string trimmer.
I will change up between backwards and forwards depending on the lay out of the yard. The key is to make sure the string is spinning towards the grass. You can also get a different weed eater gear box that spins the way you're comfortable with. Not all spin counter-clockwise.
I'm learning so much that I never knew about string trimmers lol
@@Thelawncarenut I personally feel awkward using the clockwise heads, but my buddy is left handed and loves it because he has the power head on the opposite side of his body.
i too used to own both the toro SR and honda HRX. I like both mowers too. What drove me nuts with the SR though was the amount of grass clippings that would spray out of the bottom of the mower at the end of your pass on the driveway or sidewalk. The HRX would do this too, but not nearly as much as the SR. For me, i needed to use a blower to clean up the driveway with the SR, but can get away with a broom cleanup cutting with the HRX.
Always entertained by you as well as enlightened. Loved the instagram Aussie worm bit. The wife was laughing 😂, “He’s a mess “ she said.
I enjoy trying new accents ha ha !
The super recycler has a beefier sound as well. Nice review Al
As for the string trimmer it spins counter clockwise so you want to walk (in forward direction) so it throughs away from the landscape. So if your house and the beds around it were a clock face (looking down from above) you would walk clockwise around your house. By going the opposite way not only do you through the clippings into the landscape but the clipping get tossed into the uncut that your trimming and works the trimmer more.
Still using the pas-225 I see! That thing is a beast, I just got one and did a review on it. I prefer walking forward when trimming, walking around the house and fences left-to-right. It's all personal preference, no right or wrong way as long as you arent scalping anything like my neighbor is always doing lol. Man, I need a timemaster too now Haha! My view of Honda has been tainted a bit with transmission problems lately. Bullet proof engine but my self propelled isnt working anymore, grrr...
I have the same Honda. I feel the mulching works great. It's only when I cut more than third of the leaf the mulching leaves clippings behind. And from the video it looked like it was well over 1/3, just saying.
Your background music in the first half sounds like a scene from the movie Pulp Fiction 😀😀
Love your videos, keep up the good work (sent from coastal New Hampshire) 🙌🙌
Move the governor spring to the next hole on the honda. It will rev to the correct speed and mulch heaps better
I am very surprised u have not got your hands on a 36” Wright stander for a review, being the LCN an all . That would be a game changer .
As I make a pass, I’m looking for that occasional blade that got missed in the previous pass, then I pause and get the missed blade, then resume my my normal pass. Works well for me without having to overlap much and not double passing.
I have old eyes so I can't see the stragglers from 5' away lol
As always, great video
Thank you
Appreciate the effort, but one of the hardest side by side video’s to follow along with. Not to mention the lawn is in way to pristine condition to start with, hard to gauge the pros and cons on each mower
Thanks for the review, both seem to be great machines. 1st, video quality on this cam is far superior to your other review, other video had a continuous blurry area, a few feet away from the cam. My 1st thought was wow, Allyn got a new camera! 2nd I always do the backwards walk when trimming, takes a bit to get used to, but you'll get the hang of it, and your beds will stay much cleaner. Thanks for the content..Ken
thanks bro!
I just stayed walking the other way this year when you talked about it in a previous video, wasn't much of an achievement for me but I have to edge out my sidewalks and driveways first now walking forward and then go around the house
Very Kill Bill vibe with the tunes.... Love it bro
On a double cut mow try going the reverse direction on the second cut, also rather than mowing right up to paths, garden edges and the like turn before the path line, finish the mow with a clean up lap or maybe two around the outside (Inside of paths and garden edges) this gives a professional looking mow
Hope to see a review of the Honda HRX217 GCV 200.
I try to overlap by a quarter to a half on my St. Augustine here in Houston. Now I'm going to be self conscious about how many stray grass blades I have sticking up after I mow. I know there is some, but it doesn't seem like it's as bad as what your video shows...maybe that is due to the overlap. Great video. I'm actually looking at new mowers. I have a bottom line Toro 22" self propelled, but I'll be damned after not using it for 2-3 years it started up first pull.
Another Houstonian here. Not sure on the overlapping. I run directly on the wheel line with good results. I’ve has a couple 22” big box store Toro’s, just picked up an electric start Toro super recycler, gosh it’s nice. Super light, roles smooth, easier to push than my sons Bob’s stroller. Lol.
You should do a test on the Zoysia lawn with the battery powered mower one day. That would be fun to wtach!
I've been experimenting with the overlap on the Honda and found that I get a better cut and less stragglers on the St. Aug if I keep the wheel on the inside of the previous pass.
I agree. When I am just mowing on my own without worrying about filming I do the same thing.
Metal shavings can scratch your paint and your cornea. We have to go in with a tiny drill and take out rust when somebody gets metal in their cornea. Safeties! 🤓
Good review. I wonder which would be better for a low and tight bermuda yard. I normally cut with a Tru-Cut reel mower, but sometimes go behind and mulch or bag with a 34 year old Snapper Hi-Vac walk behind that is on it's last legs.
I have been doing lawn service for about 25 years. I always walk backwards. If you can't walk backwards just make sure you start from the right side. It will throw the clippings out and back.
Or get the Ego trimmer it spins opposite way 😂 took me a while to get used to it lol
Hey Allen, I was wondering if you ever plan on doing reviews on larger mowers for people that need a tractor or zero turn due to the size our lawn. I currently have 20K of lawn.
Love it ! You are a lawn care nut !
Another thing to check on the Honda is engine RPM. Mine was almost 800 less than what the service manual called for. Made the adjustment and made a huge difference mulching. Got rid of the stragglers too.
How do you check? I’ve a TimeMaster but still curious.
@@futbolplaya07 You would use an inductive type digital tach that picks up the rpm signal from the spark plug wire and adjust to manufacturer's spec.
~Mike
I think on this video the Super Recycler looked the best to me. I have used Honda's, Snappers, Recyclers and Super Recyclers in cool season/transition grasses and personally find the regular Recycler gives me the better cut.
LCN- Another informative Vid- One thing to note on this Video is that your Honda Mower is the premium residential mower with a very powerful engine. It is a big step up from the $400 entry level Honda and results will also reflect that. Many homeowners just buy the basic Honda which while good, is vastly different than what you have.
I am biased towards the Honda, since that what I have owned in my own yard for 18 years, and what I used when I was a kid. My dad used a manual real mower until I was in 3rd grade, when he brought home a Honda HR214 (1983 or something) I used that Honda on my own yard and on apartments in my neighborhood when I was a teen. The transmission went out on it in the mid 90's and my dad got a Honda Master's that he still uses today.
I have used other mowers over the years at other people's places. My Grandpa had an Ariens Orange Reel mower as well as a cheap push (literally) mower. I have also used Yardman mower's with a cheap Honda engine. Nothing felt as good as a good Honda to me, but then again, that is what I know.
I just bought another Honda , this time going with an HRC (my 2nd Honda purchased with my own $'s.) My old HRM215 lasted 18 years. It was really reliable and got used a ton for a homeowner. I usually mowed from March until November or even December. Most of the time every 3-4 days. Things I like about the honda- Super easy to pull the starter cord due to the BBC. It also starts on the 1rst or second pull every time. Even when I pulled it out after winter it would start on the 2nd or 3rd pull. Another thing I like is the reliability. Very Very reliable. The BBC is a must have in my opinion! So easy to move kids toys off the lawn or empty the grass bag without having to restart the motor
I had two things go wrong in 18 years of ownership of my old Mower- Transmission in 2011ish- which cost $180. Then in 2018, my coil when out, which cost $100. I would change the oil each year, using synthetic 10w-30. I would take it into the shop every 2-4 years for a tune in the spring or fall. Still had my original bag and it worked well, with no holes.
Some things I don't like about it were that the parts seemed expensive. My wheels needed to be replaced every 2-4 years, and weren't cheap. ($20 per wheel). My mower deck was so light that with a full bag of grass, it would pull the front wheels off the ground with each small bump in the lawn.
Great Vid LCN. Always fun to try and even buy new machines. I only have one mower, but have 3 different trimmers- Easier to store in my garage than 3 mowers!
All the best!
I had an old Honda mower (my dad did) too. I don't know the year but I want to think it only had a 19" wide cut - it was thin. Would have been about 1985 that we got it if I am remembering right. Upgraded from an orange Sears mower. that Honda was a great unit, had blade stop too which I think was the first of its kind - I still remember the iconography was a turtle and a hair for the speeds.
@@Thelawncarenut Yep, Turtle icon for slow, and rabbit for fast. Love those old Hondas. The bag was really difficult for me to snap into place! I was a skinny weak kid and it took all I could muster to get that bag to snap into the correct position.
I have the toro. I like it. The only thing I can compare it to is my old mower. A Craftsman I used for 10 years. Which was fine. But Not near as good as the toro. My toro is terrible when it comes to bagging. I don’t bag a lot. But I wish it was better. It doesn’t throw the clippings to the back of the bag. So they collect near the front and the bag doesn’t fill as much as it should. When I dump the bag it’s maybe 1/3ish full. mulch’s good.
LCN, how about a part 3 where you’re bagging the clippings?
Another great review! I used to walk forward myself and the transition to going backwards isn't bad. What are your thoughts on the Edgit Pro?
Allyn, check your trimmer manual. My Toro trimmer manual says to walk right to left to avoid too much line being wasted when hitting obstacles (fences, brick, etc). Nothing about backwards or forward so that's news to me.
The recommended way and probably the best way is to trim the same direction as the trimmer head spins. Counter clockwise, right to left. Clockwise, left to right.
I love this channel.
Side discharge or rear discharge will also give you a better cut because you create better lift and air flow. And using a high lift blade should give you an even better looking cut.
Have you tried a grinder flapper wheel, I use a 80 grit , works better the a regular grinding wheel, keep up the videos
The Honda is great at mulching, but you really have to mow often, if you get anywhere close to overgrown I find its best to open the bag door 1/4 way to relieve the deck of too many clippings.
Never thought about it, but I always walk backwards.
2 to 3 wheel width overlap should get it with the Honda
Damn cool tunes!!! Both seem to cut well. I'm still undecided. I wish Honda would come out with a 30"er. It be a no brainier!
Get the timemaster
Another video idea would be to have @Jakethelawnkid to do this continued review on his cool season lawn to show how these handle cool season turf. Just a thought! Love the reviews!
Toro definitely won this battle imo... great video Allen!
Good review...Might want to check Honda to make sure motor is in right rpm range ...and i my opinion the jx75 and jx 85 deer push mower had the best cut in st Augustine type grass...need to do a review on exmark wide area mower in 36 inch in a hydro
Those Deere had that donut shaped decks and sure mulched well!
They were a pain to bag with that was for sure, that tube attachment and the bag hanging from the handle was not easy to use in lush turf.
@@wayneessar7489 The thing when you bagged is the front of mower got light and bag was not big enough. .but compared to mowers today it had a way better cut ..
The only issue I have had with my super Recycler is that when I only mow once a week, it has some issues. Basically it will leave a trail of clippings in the left wheel tracks. Only in the super thick parts of my lawn. And it is only an issue in the mid and lower cut heights. The top two settings pull in enough air to keep things clean. At least that is my assumption. Only problem for me is that my KBG tends to fall over at cuts that high. Even cutting half width and going slow will do it. If I can get my two a week in, it is a non issue.
I use rust proof scissors to trim up some grass blades that i miss.
I have seen several of your videos where you throw the clippings into the flower bed and it drives me nuts!!!! LOL there is strategy to trimming a yard I always assess the yard I'm in and make a plan going counter clock wise on a "TRIM JOB" this will throw the clippings into your yard vs your flower beds, passing cars and house windows hope this helps keep up the great videos!! Ps the Lawn Rebel sucks for not helping you level your lawn when he came down to help you mow!!!
I'd like to think I'm pretty proficient trimming hard edges with my SRM 225 but once you get a PAS 2620 with the straight shaft stick edger for your hard edges you'll never look back!. I also thought the Toro looked like it did a little better on the cut quality, even in the previous video... I'm cutting KBG in Southern ON Canada at 4.5" with my Toro Time Master right now and I only do a double cut if I find its a little damp or overgrown, just to really clean it up nicely. This mower mulches 10 times better than my previous mower and I absolutely love the personal pace system. I only added 2 things to this mower, a GOOD quality Hour/RPM meter, also tracks oil life and air filter cleaning intervals (super handy), and a Checkmate striping kit from Big League Lawns.. you won't find a better striping kit on the market, the lawn looks awesome after striping it with that setup. I also bumped up my RPMs to roughly 3500RPM at idle and roughly 3300RPM with the blades engaged.. that small adjustment made a fair difference in cut quality since your now putting more revolutions to your blades resulting in better mulching and increased blade lift. Also as others have stated, keep those blades sharp!.
What do you think about using a flow meter instead of timing a sprinkler for watering a lawn?
That Zoysia is lookin dark and lush!
I really like it. Soft under bare feet
Great video Allyn! What do you use on Topeedo grass in St Augustine? My yard is getting taken over by this stuff!
Fantastic Video I'm in the market for a new lawn mower I've had may last mower for 39 years now and want to treat myself to a new mower, it was between these two machines this helped me out for sure, thanks for creating this video.. I'm 70 years old and this lawn mower purchase will be my last for sure, Cheers,,
let's hope you can out live this next one and that it lasts at least 39 more years!!!
@@Thelawncarenut Ya Lets Hope LOL. Wife bought me my first lawn mower in 1980 for my 30th Bday and old 2 stroke lawn boy that I have been fighting with for the last 5 years to keep it running , Finally died, not to sad to see it go, it owes me nothing after all these years. going to test out both of these mowers tomorrow and get myself a new trimmer as well at a local dealer in Calgary Alberta, again thanks for all your videos they have taught me so much about lawn care..Regards..
That bossa nova is awesome. Reminds me of the music they played on Mr. Rogers when he would leave his house and visit the pottery studio or music store or something.
Also, looks to me like the review favors Toro in cut “smoothness”, but you’re right about the Honda’s turning abilities. My Toro 22” Recycler has been very good to me for 12 years, but it isn’t fun to turn.
Ha ha it is alot like the land of make believe !
@@Thelawncarenut - Joao Gilberto died on July 6th, so I'm playing bossa nova myself, today.
That Zoysia is bangin
I have both and prefer the Honda. The overall build quality and sturdiness seems better. Also the Toro has difficulty when you want to back up the wheels don't move freely after u release the personal pace. From talking to other Nuts in Toro forums this is quite common. The Honda has no issue. Finally the Toro I have came with a Briggs engine which tends to idle up and down while the Honda purrs like a fine sports car. One area I prefer the Toro is when mulching or bagging . Although it has the annoying plug instead of onboard version ,I find the Toro chute area stays much cleaner when mulching or bagging while the Honda always had a bunch of grass in the chute after a cut. I also like the side discharge option on the Toro while my Honda had only the rear discharge which doesn't seem practical as it's throwing it on your feet as you walk . I love have the team with the two of them but I do enjoy the Honda a bit more.
6 stars for the Bossa Nova Jazz intro!!!!!
Nice comparison but actually I think the Honda is better for long straight runs and the Toro is better for short ones. the Honda is less maneuverable and heavier to pull backwards IMO. Also as for cut quality it should be mentioned you need a sharp blade as a Wal-Mart mower with a sharp blade will do a better job than either of those with a dull blade.
which you recommend for a uneven 5,000 sq ft lawn Toro Super Recycler or Honda HRX?
2:52 You guys remember that part in E.T. where E.T. was wrapped in the blanket in the bike basket? Similarities between these two scenes for sure.
I instantly thought this when he came on with that head cover lolol.
I stand by my statement in the other video that a lawn more more the 50% less will do the same quality cut Just a matter of the extra features like the self propel and height adjustment settings.
I agree with you and plan to do some more reviews along that line if thinking
A Scag V-Ride with a velocity deck would be ideal for cut quality but that mower is on another level from these box store mowers.
These passes seem like a lot more than 1/3, Ive had a couple hrx217 and they have offered the best cut of any mower I've used.
walking backwards is slower... but i guess that only matters if you do it professionally, or if you have an angled vs curved trimmer shaft...
Great Update Vid Allyn! Question? Wondering if one mower has more power than the other or are they both equivalent in the 6-6.5HP range as that would make a difference. Sorry if you answered this already!
I'm not sure on that one. I don't know too much about tech specs and stuff like that.
Theres only one person I know who can make every grass blade famous 🤣
You ever considered doing a demo of different blades and styles of blades such as copperhead, and gator blades?
I've always used stock blades, never looked at the others - maybe I should!
Which of the two do you think is easier to use without engaging the self-propel? I have a few places I need to be really careful and with my current mower, I disengage the self-propel. Thanks in advance for replying.
Any cordless electric trimmer reviews in the works?
Allan, whats the disadvantages of mowing below 3"? I have a neighbor who has very green St. Augustine but he keeps it around 1 1/2" low. It looks beautiful but I am afraid its going to look horrendous come winter. What will happen to his lawn, long term? Cutting it that short cannot be good.
Thanks to you..... I ended up getting both of them 😂
