  • Carles Puyol is one of the most celebrated and loved players in the history of both Barcelona FC and footballl as a whole.
    The man left it all on the pitch for Blaugrana and I'm fairly certain that they would not mind if someone like him were around at the moment.
    But how good was he really?

  • @solidsnake8572
    @solidsnake8572 Před 2 lety +39

    Puyol was Barça embodied in a person. As a Catalan and Barça fan since literally always (I was born right next to the Camp Nou, in fact) you just can't imagine how much I miss Puyol, as much as getting chills all over my body just listening to this and watching his footage. He was THE CAPTAIN. Strong, a leader but always, always respectful towards everyone. The kind of man who always shakes hands at the end of the match. He was like a rugby player, on the pitch he was wild, aggressive (always towards the ball, never the players) and put his heart on there, but when the match was over he was the first to shake hand with the rivals wether he won or lost.
    In fact, he was so special that decided to retire when he was still "young". He could have been some more years at Barça as a sub or go to China, Qatar, USA... But he always had a thing clear: he wanted to play to win something that matters and there were only two clubs he wanted to play: Barça or AC Milan. Many people don't know this, but Puyol was a big, big fan of Maldini since he was young, and fell in love with Arrigo Sacchi's Milan. When Joan Laporta entered the club in 2003, the Barça economy was in shambles after years of terrible management by Nuñez and Gaspart, and the club was in red numbers. Puyol wanted to keep here, he was the captain, but knew about the situation.
    By then, AC Milan which was much greater than that Barça (with Maldini, Nesta, Shevchenko, Inzaghi, Dida, Cafu and so on) had interest in Puyol and even talked to Laporta to know if he was on sale. Puyol talked to Laporta and told him: "I want to triumph in Barça, I want to stay. But if the club needs that I leave to get money and recover, I'll do it, just please let it be to Milan, nowhere else."
    Laporta didn't want to sell him so he stayed, but he was loyal to the end even if that meant leaving his life club.

    The greatest captain to ever step on the field. The only ones to come really close are probably Paolo Maldini and Javier Zanetti. Those are the real captains, no nonsense, no diving, no dirty tricks, no excuses, but just pure commitment and focus. Train hard, play hard, respect everyone and become a legend. Sad to say, but they don't make the gentleman pitch generals anymore.

    if there's a Cosmic Force against Strikers, his name's Puyol
    what an absolute delight to watch someone defend with such lethal intensity, it stood out;
    i'd rather watch Barca under offensive pressure than an evenly stacked match cause we get the cameras on Puyol's Ferocity

    Even Messi don't have those number of matches as captain in Barça like Puyol.

    My favourite player. Under the word Integrity in the dictionary there should be a picture of Puyol.

    Puyol was PURE DISCIPLINE, the pure essence of hard work and discipline, not getting distracted by anything in this world till the job is done. Players dancing celebrating a goal? he goes and stops them till the game is over, piqué complining because a lighter was thrown to him? nonsense! stop complaining let's keep focused into the game, and so was puyol, pure focus and discipline. Piqué was distracted? Puyol has rough words to make him focus back to the game no problem. And that's why is Puyol remembered as a legend, he was totally disciplined, a professional. Nowadays you see so many players complaining for every single thing happening in the field just to try to get some advantage out of the referees. Puyol wasn't that kind of player and perhaps that's why is Puyol respected like that.

    It's not surprising that Puyol was the more aggressive one despite being shorter than Pique. One guy I knew who was a scrappy youth said that he only ever feared guys shorter than him - they'll make up for the difference in ferocity.
