- The LEGO 10327 Dune Ornithopter is an amazing model. But at what cost?
Here's my LEGO review to talk about it.

Double Insiders points still going until the end of 24th of January, so a good time to purchase if you're planning to do it eventually!
Just a heads up. The amazon link goes to LEGO Star Wars The Justifier 75323, looks very similar though!
Can’t take advantage of double points because it isn’t purchasable yet 😢
The curved blades ruin it for me. The fact it's not symmetrical in the most critical place, the wings, make it look cheap and like something my kid brother made.
As for the "flapping" uh, not impressive. If it didn't flap, that'd be like a car with fixed wheels that don't spin. The landing gear is really well done as is the cockpit. The rest of the body is OK but the red and blue pieces need to be grey or black and the wings need to be flat or mirrored. It really sucks that LEGO made them curved but were too cheap to make the opposite mirrored ones for this model. It's WAY overpriced for what it is and the glaring flaw in the asymmetrical wings.
Hi Tiago,
I always wondered who designs these? and what software do they use.
And how does one go about learning to design
Engineering behind this set is insane🤯
I agree
The designer for this sat down for a while on this one, and is probably a big Dune fan
the amiunt of play features they crammed into this thing is unreal. they didnt even have to do any of this as it is a +18 set it just shows how much the design team must have enjoyed making it.
I thought it was super cool at first but it does kinda look shyte with all the technic sticking out in the middle.
And seems overpriced to me. Still gonna get it though.
@@SP-sy5nqyou are spot on!
@@SP-sy5nq Yeah I feel the same but pre-ordered anyway, and as impressive as the effort into the landing gear and wings is I'd pay the same for a less dynamic but more accurate looking model.
18+ doesn't mean no fun's allowed. The mechanism is half of the appeal to me for that set. I like when Lego combine both worlds: Technic frame/mechanism with finition in standard Lego and minifigs ready (or like the combine harvester: a technic model adapted for minifigs). My only complain: lack of usable space in the back, where the ramp is, but it is at most a medium complain. I intend to get it and first thing I do when it's built is to swoosh it around the house , with the flapping wings, like it should be .
@@gs8494 There are plenty of static MOCs out there already, and I bet people will soon come up with ways to make this one more like what you want so I guess keep an eye out. For me this is the essence of what Lego could and should be, it's perfect.
For my eye, it looks as if it's straight from the movie. I don't even notice the odd awkward colored connector piece. I know Icons sets have usually been slick mainly System builds but I think the Ornithopter looks cleaner than many of those, even with visible technic parts. And it's way more iconic.
So sad to hear you're blind 😕
@@xyoxus Do better.
agreed ! it somehow looks natural, after all it's a machine being represented, so having visible technic functions makes sense
agree that the ornithopter can be considered iconic, but not sure at all what the “many” lego icons
I also can’t help but think it would have been a disservice to the source material to prioritize a final polished look for the model and abandon its functionality.
Yes, color swaps for the pins probably should have been done and that should be criticized, but making this an otherwise technic system heavy set was the right call; I think if this was a static model it would ultimately feel less impressive
Wow, those mechanisms are insane! I personally adore system-technic symbiosis so I am 100% getting this. However I will certainly be swapping all the coloured axles, ball joints and other strangely coloured connector pieces for neutral ones from my own collection. I see why the decision was made with how people that buy Icons products often are rather inexperienced with the LEGO system but it really is an eyesore as it is. That's the beauty of LEGO though, just make it your own!
Oh come on the pins are red & blue because Lego wanted to save a couple cents.
@@RegenTonnenEnte Believe what you will.
@@hilliebert25 *know
@@RegenTonnenEnte Sure.
@@RegenTonnenEnte if they wanted to they would have all been a single color. Now you have both black and red ones of the small ones for example.
It’s very impressive. And considering the design is a toy based on a movie that’s based on a description from a book I think the designer did a fantastic job. You can actually pull up the wings and stick it on a decent sized shelf.
Best comment
Function was clearly placed before looks. Fortunately, I think most of the brightly colored technic pieces can be replaced by black ones, fairly common on older models. Just have them ready before starting the building process, because I think it’s going to be difficult to dismantle it once it has been constructed.
Can’t wait to have mine. Big fan of the movie and this craft in particular.
The only piece I haven't been able to replace afterwards that's very visible is the red brick in the folding handle. The other pieces can be replaced after the fact without too much effort =)
There are a few videos on swapping out the piece and a list of what you need, I ordered mine from Bricklink and will wait till they arrive prior to building the model.
Super impressive mechanics and engineering. I totally agree with you: the coloured pieces make no sense at all. I can understand using coloured pieces to help follow instructions as long as they're hidden behind/under other pieces, but this would just look so much better with black and grey pieces.
It feels like it’s very deliberate, to communicate it’s not a static model, and to add visual depth to the mechanism, so they’re accentuated. Probably because they’re an important part of the model. And looking at it on it’s display shelf two meters away you don’t see it at all.
Part of me wants all the studs concealed with textured lego pieces, and those generic technic bricks concealed a little better - but the most egregious thing are the coloured connectors (which this is far from the first set to experience this issue). For such a simple recolour - bright red and blue are exactly the colours you don't want. Greys, whites and blacks ir even some of the other muted tans wouldn't have gone amiss.
Still, it's a tremendous kit. Even if it does feel a little bit like they designed the solution for the technic elements and then just threw the rest of the ship around it.
The color critique is really fair. Lego does have those pieces in grey/black!
Built it today, took me the afternoon. Great experience building it, the mechanisms are brilliantly laid out, and the finished ornithopter looks amazing. LEGO knocked it out of the park with this one.
My jaw dropped when you started flapping the wings. I was not expecting that at all.
To be honest, I'm torn on this one. On one hand, it's a really expensive set for a franchise I've never seen, but on the other hand, it's a big dragonfly that can flap its wings. I like LEGO bugs quite a bit, and this one is especially impressive to me. I almost certainly won't end up getting it, but dang the temptation is there
get it
And watch dune but more importantly read it
Same here, I've not watched the movie or read the book, I couldn't care less about the minifigures, but I LOVE that ornithopter design so I'm also really tempted to get this! Maybe I should get it and sell the minifigures to recoup a little money 🤔
Ooh, now I hope someone will build a beautiful dragonfly MOC from this build.
Heck, that could be a Lego Ideas thing.
If you want to save 150+ bucks don't watch the movie 😅 You'll have to buy it if you do.
i dont care that it doesnt look the best, the functions and the minifigs are why im getting it
Minifigs alone is a good reason to get the set they are selling for close to 20 dollars each, and a few above that mark. As for the red parts I ordered all the parts I needed from brick-link to replace them with black pieces for like 6 dollars.
I like how you're able to give a critical review of sets while thoroughly covering the details, you do a good job showing how and why it's not necessarily your "cup of tea", but without taking away from the review for those who are more aligned with the target audience. Not often to see a review that largely concludes "I don't like it" that still makes you want to buy the product :P
The functionality is just amazing! I can compromise on looks when the function is this great and out of this world for a Lego set. Looking forward to picking this up even though I’m not a Dune fan.
When I heard Mike Psiaki is the designer of this, I knew we were going to be in for a treat, given his insane and crazy building techniques and mechanisms over the last 8 years; he certainly doesn't fail to impress here that's for sure! Heck even the Fast Car set he designed from 2016, an early creation of his, was really cool.
As for this set, I have not seen the film, but I am interested and keen to build this; it's a bit costly but it's quite a large model overall and something very cool looking and different. The only problems I see, as someone who is keen on builds regardless of the theme, is there's a lot of sets in this price range that are just as desirable, if not more desirable than this, and it's dangerously close to the price of the Concorde set. I know this set will be very widely available so I should expect discounts on it, which is when I'll jump in for it.
You said it's a challenging build, and that's fine by me; it makes its 18+ age rating justified because it's tough to build. I really have not liked how that 18+ age rating has been abused since it was introduced as it's not used as a true indicator of the difficulty of a set's build. Heck there's been Technic sets of a drastically lower age rating, like 10+ or 11+, that were far more challenging to build.
I agree about the 18+ thing. Normally, age ratings are made to protect children from things they might not be able to handle, whether it be controversial imagery in a movie or sharp/dangerous objects. But with Lego, it often feels like the age just relates the piece count (more pieces = older), and some of the 18+ sets feel like they're rated thusly purely because they would better fit in an adult's office space. It's like they're protecting the adults from childish building sets, not vice versa.
Many still not understand that the 18+ thing on Lego sets has neve r been intended as a dificulty level. It is simply a marketing stunt done to remind Adults that Lego is for every one. They remind us tha becoming adult does mean to become boring, soulless and fun less : play is still allowed. Oh and by the ways, 18+ sets are not exclusive to adults, kids can have them too, depending of their level.
Also, 18+ sets are often made to be a shelf piece. That's not to say you couldn't play with e.g. the Eiffel Tower, the globe, or any of the Lego flowers, but that's not their main selling point.
That's why I really love that this set is designed to actually be played with, and not just be put on a shelf to collect dust after the build is complete.
@@geothemonkey The age rating is entirely to Lego's discretion, so obviously they'll use it for marketing. But we should still demand better use of that badge on the box. Plus, if they really cared about not making adults feel unwelcomed by their products, then we wouldn't have upper bounds on age ratings, like 6-14.
"18+" is really just a marketing gimmick designed to separate adults from their money :) It has no real bearing on difficulty. Come to think of it, other than some of the big, advanced Technic sets, I've never encountered any Lego set that was hard to build. That's part of the fun: it's always going to be an easy, relaxing process. When I want a challenge, I build scale models, which require all kinds of specialized skills and tools, as well as creative decision making.
The designer of this set is a genius
Already pre ordered 2 wheb it was revealed after you posted your video, my son will love the functions and we will both have a blast playing with our models together. I can understand the issues people have with the set but for toying around with children it is just perfect ! I love technic and system and dune universe so an all around win for me.
Thanks for the review and thanks to Mike for gifting us this amazing set
Again they ruin the look of the model with those obtrusive bright blue and beige technic pins. Is it too much to ask for black and grey pins in an 18+ set?
Oh my goodness I’m so excited for this set I pre ordered it! Dune is one of my favorite lego so getting this in lego is a dream come true. Thank you so much taigo for reviewing this always look forward to your new videos.
The play features remind me a lot of the Bionicle speeders from 2008!
As a fan of the Novels/films and the technic system I'll definitely pick this set up!
Thank you for the review Tiago! This set looks really nice with tons of playable functions. I know nothing about and have not seen the Dune Movie but my favorite function is the folding of the wings. when I first saw this set, I thought it wasn’t minifig scale.
So I can’t wait to get it!
Tiago whenever he has to touch a technic axle: "why does God always give me his toughest battles?"
Well put, functionality vs visually appealing, Was looking forward to this review, nice job Tiago!!
First and only set I've pre-ordered! So excited for this!
Hope you enjoy it!
I will be B-Lining to my local Lego store right after work on release. I need this set period.
I hope you didn't order from Lego directly as this set can already be pre-ordered with discounts of around 20 bucks (euros)
Where?@@xyoxus
@@xyoxus Welp, now im sad, time to prorder another one
I appreciate the quick review. Straight to the point.
Target had this listed for $150 briefly at pre-order release. That was likely the original MSRP before LEGO's bean counters decided to pump up those numbers. I am so excited for this one to arrive. The source material is amazing and niche, the model is a perfect blend of function for me. I'd rather see more technic integration into sets that are primarily machines. Very well done again Mike Psiaki!
Easy must-buy set for me. Absolutely love it.
Though the technic sacrifices the look a bit, it would be so cool to get stuff like this for Star Wars ships. The Justifier is a good example of these amazing smooth play features.
Seeing Dune in Imax today, great timing!
Have fun! Great movie! Gotta rewatch it
Hey Tiago - thanks for another wunderful in-depth review.
Since the instructions are not yet online, and perhaps because it could be interesting for a few others: if it doesn’t take you to long: could you perhaps point out the number of different colored connectors, so that we can preorder black/grey replacements now, before the set arrives?
Would be a big help!
Anyway - have a great day!
Wow, those are some great functions! Impressive!
I do wish that Paul had an second face print with the Eyes of Ibad (the blue-in-blue eyes that are a sign of heavy, continuous use of the spice melange) but I suppose since he doesn’t have those yet in the first film it’s understandable that the minifig doesn’t have them. Otherwise, I can’t wait for mine to arrive next week. Dune is tied for my favorite sci-fi series of all time, and I can’t wait to build this (and to see Part 2 on the largest screen possible)
The connector color choices are insane.
This is the first Lego set I’ve bought in about twenty years, because it embodies the feel of the books and the movies perfectly.
I even like the brightly coloured parts, they communicate something technical is happening there, that it’s not a static model.
I struggle at times with lego since I absolutely want complicated cool mechanisms in sets. The pacman cabinet is one of my favorites for handling both aesthetics and technical building very well. I admit I had zero interest in this set until seeing your review. This looks so cool to me. I think you're spot on with your review though, it doesn't seem like it fulfills the need for dune fans or aesthetic builder's like yourself. My personal wish is for Lego to get over doing vehicle only technic builds. The new revolving earth and sun set looks to be a nice change up from their usual so I'll definitely be getting that one. However I'm now thinking about getting this in a couple years if it goes on sale.
The earth and sun set is so bad. There are way better sets with the whole solar systems without like 20+ wrongly colored pins.
I can’t believe how many Lego builders complain about technique. If it wasn’t this they’d be complaining that the wings don’t move like in the movie.
Wow looks fantastic awesome review 👍
Works better that what it looks. In my opinion!
I'm really hyped for this one! But since mine won't come for a couple of weeks, I'll watch your review after I get it :P
I like the contrast techic pins colors
I am getting one this week. I can't wait for it
This is one set I’ll definitely try to grab whenever I get the chance. The mechanic and features are just amazing.
The designer really did push the limit for a mass produced product.
I AM SO HYPED FOR THIS ONE
the movement! i did not expect that, to be honest!!!
My first Lego set of years, bc I love dune so much!
Preordered, waiting for my package :)
"...goes way beyond my Lego technic understanding..." that was funny! 😂
I preordered the model as soon it was announced. I'm also a bit disappointed by the red pieces we can see, but I can't wait to assemble this intricate machine.
Incredible how LEGO can become such things?
Target listed the price incorrectly on reveal day and I was able to preorder for $149 usd, huge win
After seeing the official reveal I pre-ordered this from a Finnish retailer for 139,99EUR so a bit better value than the official pricing. Based on this review I can't wait to get building it. The mechanisms look amazing and challenging.
134 here in Netherlands. 18% discount from msrp..never knew they do discounts om preorder ?!
I preordered mine a few days ago, I cannot wait
I gotta say it looks better on your video than in official pictures. I know the red pins were probably added to make the instructions clearer for something that is already hard to put together, but it takes away SO MUCH from the look of the thing. I just wish they went with black pins for the compromise of difficult to follow instructions. It's also a bit chunkier than I'd like, but the functions are amazing. Here's my verdict: The looks are from 2010 but the functions are from 2025 when it comes to Lego 'innovation'. And sets from 2010 are still highly sought after, so I let this one pass because this set wouldn't be anywhere near as impressive without these functions.
I'm waiting to see how the second Dune movie does, if it goes well I might pick this set up. This is such a one of a kind set that I doubt something like this will ever be made again.
Good point about the color of the pins. I was thinking it was to add SOME color originally.
Mike is always Number 1
I got a bunch of black pieces from the brick store per advice of some article and backed out those red pieces. This kit is really cool. The wing mechanics (especially the folding) and the landing gear are awesome.
The only downside I can think of is just its size. With the wings extended it is absolutely massive. You can't put it on a shelve with those wings extended. Heck it will probably fill up a normal sized coffee table 😅 But it's absolutely gorgeous as well 😍
I appreciate the engineering behind this set but I wish the wings movement was a bit more fluent and more dragon fly like...the feature when they fold back is amazing though! Great reveiw dude! 😊
I loved the film and these things were cool. Tempted to buy some lego again
Hello! I just completed it. but I notice that the rear wings do not move. is it correct or have I done something wrong? Thank you!
I'm halfway through building mine and it really reminds me, in a very good way, of the Technic sets of yesteryear, when they were mostly System shells filled with mechanisms, rather than their current style of using panel fairings everywhere.
I love the Dune books and movie and was super hyped when I heard the rumors for this set. But when I saw the images I have to say I was let down. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great model, very screen accurate, and all of the functions they managed to fit in there is insanely cool. But as someone who prefers to build sets then display them on shelves, and this being more of a 18+ playset, I’m not sure if I’m going to be buying it. I really want the minifigs, but I guess I’ll just have to make customs.😢
Can’t wait to get this. So cool.
Huge Dune fan. This is a must get.
That thing looks incredible
Great video! Thanks!
Building it right now, this thing is awesome.
Top 100! Love the videos!
Never played the game, not even watched the movie.
But I want it. The looks and the functionalities are insane.
Might as well at least go and see the movies, or read the book!
Amazing set!
Love this. Another Mike Psiaki special.
this is a massive moment for a "shut up and take my money"
Maybe I did something wrong, but right behind the black bar for flapping the wings is a dark gray 2x3 plate. It comes loose when I repeatedly press the black bar. Is anyone else experiencing this?
100% mind blown by this!!!
Dune and lego technic for me decision was obvious I made my first pre-order. It looks fine, we have a lot of minifigures and functions are imazing.
Technic builders are a different type of lego consumer. This model is amazing. Yes the looks suffer, but looks aren't the only thing lego offers.
All of this technic witchcraft is insane
Wonderfull. And I don't mind the red. Or playability. Choices have to be made. Although the cargo would have been nice. At least something to close it could have been made. But oké.
The only think I don't like, just as you, are the technic elements. Yes, its impressive but still.
However: was it the techical part in the lego camera more dificult or not?
Edit: I forgot that it was shown that there is something to close the cargo.
this thing is so sick! they should have branded it a technic set but other than that I'm so happy with all the mechanical functions and how they work!
I'm not a Dune fan, but this is one seriously cool set! Looks great and those mechanisms are amazing. And personally I don't mind the Technic at all......well, except for the color puke, that is. I'm not a fan of weird colors at places where you don't see them on the finished model, but it's even worse when they do very much remain visible. I can't get my head around why Lego themselves doesn't get this. "Hey, we've got this awesome set. How can we ruin it?"
Considering that this has literally all of the main characters from the first movie included as minifigs, I think its a safe assumption in thinking that this will be the only Dune set we ever get. I definitely wish that they had chosen more logical colors with the connector pegs and joints, and I'll probably be looking into buying some black/dark gray elements to replace them with. But all in all, as someone who has a $100+ leather-bound edition of Dune on my shelf, Im super excited to build this!
I ordered this one on cyber Monday. Still waiting for it and my “Christmas ornament & horse and carriage” GWP. I hope they held those for me! The order has been in process for quite some time so I hope it’s just packed and waiting to ship.
I honestly wish they made something a little more simple in order to have a small space for the hosts inside the back to recreate some of the scenes better. The vibration function isn't all that great and I could see it sacrificed without loosing much
I have finally got my hand on one, and after seeing alot of video talking about the ugly red and blue looking parts, I've managed to get thoses in black or grey colors, and it makes a HUGE difference. I would totally recommand those who want to get the Ornithopter to do the same, as it changes the look of the set completely.
The box looks like it had an interesting trip.
This should be tied up there with the UCS AT AT. Yes compromises were made for functionality. But the functionality is absolutely amazing. Plus its sturdy as hell to fly around the house.
just got this :D. time to see if it holds up (i hope it does, dune is my favorite books series)
I'm getting this, love Dune
I love it! Just finished it and the mechanics are mind blowing! Im amazed that someone designed this.
Some like the look, some dont. Im ok with the look since the mechanics are the highlight in my opinion. If you want a realistic model, well... get a real model. Lego is building bricks, not custom molded to specifications like actual models... not usually at least.
Without the blue and red connectors, it would actually look pretty cool and could function as a display piece.
I love the exposed technics pieces, it looks like an old helicopter, mechanical and technical. Instant buy
I am literally watching the movie at home right now and was wondering if you already made a video on this set. No need to look any further i guess 😅
The fun thing about technic is the challenging build
Dear all, can you please tell me which set has the most impressive technic mechanism(s) in your opinion? Thanks
The Casio though ⌚️🔥
Looks fantastic regardless.
This has major swoosh ability
Gostei muito do set e especialmente do novo windscreen na frente! :D
I didn’t even know this was a set until I saw this video. Anyway, went to the mall and bought it right after watching
I wish the Baron had been solid vs cloth. More printed bricks than cape. But the vehicle is really cool.
Assembled mine last weekend and yeah, it was a doozy. I missed one connection (a T shaped yellow thingie) deep inside the mechanics, and only realized like 50 pages later. Fixing that was VERY painful. But it was still awesome.
I wonder how they make these crazy Lego sets
Looks may be lacking, but hearing of the challenges to building it and all the moving features makes me kinda want this.
That gold minifig with the hair and alternate head looks like Princess Leia with a golden dress!
