Why do I want to draw? There's an inner urge, a need that is satisfied when I do it. Only the perfectionist self-critic can stop me before I begin. Self-critic says I need to watch some more tutorials before I pick up a pen or pencil. Your video helps me consider that I can learn by drawing.
You got it! 💛
this is sooooooooooo relatable
THIS IS ME!
❤
I right there with you. Add a medical thing that I’m going through that makes me tired all the time. Frida used no excuse though and so that will be my motivation to at least draw the salt shaker in front me every morning when I have my coffee.
Needed this today…I have (and keep buying more) art supplies and realize its been a way of procrastinating “making art”. I spent more time looking and ordering online than just doing it. Time to pick up a pen and paper and do something every day. Thank you Danny! Y
Another one here with the same thing!
I fell into that trap too. I thought buying supplies were a way to be doing art. Stopped buying. I got enough. I gotta discipline myself and create. Practice. Practice to get skill.
I'm laughing here. That is me also, and yes, all the online browsing and buying, it's procrastination because I'm afraid I won't succeed at something I want so badly to do. And then there's the organizing of the supplies. I've finally gotten started though.
Same here but with music.
Me too!
Thanks for showing that Van Gogh drawing at the end, that´s typically the kind of things that gives me hope for improving. I had the "comparing syndrome" and that actually made me stop doing art for over 10 years, because I genuinely thought I needed some special gift to do beautiful art. Now, I came back to it and I know what I have to do to be better: Draw, draw, and draw. :)
Slumping over a laptop, avoiding even looking at my sketchbook for a week, I still can't resist watching another Danny Pep Talk. Then, suddenly, drawing seems possible again and life worth living. Rescued!
😀Galinda.
You started in your late thirties!? Finding your channel has given me such hope. I felt like I was too old because I'm in my early thirties just starting from scratch (literally, I couldn't even draw stick figures confidently lol!) .. I have been practicing geometic shapes in different perspectivs (1, 2, 3 point) and shading them sometimes too. I took your advice from another video and just draw random things here and there as well.
Seeing someone with such a powerfully cultivated talent like yours, who started around my age, really gives me the hope I needed. I was worried it was just too late for me.
Thank you.
Starting to draw in late 40's here... it's only too late when you're dead. 😉 Hope you've been keeping at it!
@@freyartz 68 and just started. I love it.
Hows your drawing now
I love your voice and calmness its so peaceful to listen to you and I love your little jokes
I started drawing a month ago as a form of therapy, and it's worked so well that I feel it's changed my life. Tomorrow, I return to work after two months' recovery from surgery, with posters for my class (I'm a teacher) that I'm quite proud of. Thank you for your inspiring videos and thoughts.
portraits indistinguishable from photographs- Danny mimicking drawing on his photo😅 hilarious
the 3 facts to write inside your sketchbook are SO spot on
your early drawings are zero indication of what you will achieve in time. Repeat for the ones in the back-zero❤️
how you manage to squeeze so much good advice in a no bullshit clear approach yet remaining kind and empathetic to the struggles of anyone trying to follow this passion it’s very inspiring
thank you!
Thanks for your annotations!
Thanks! I thought the drawing/photo was real!!!
All I want to do is simply illustrate my journals. Nothing fancy, just want to feel happiness at being able to draw something recognisable. I think the difference between you, and all the other teachers here, is they want to demonstrate how good they are, which is fine, but you want to encourage and help people feel good while they're doing it. Different goal.
I’ve been practicing sketching people in parks or restaurants etc. Some of them are realllllly awful. The beauty of being able to close the journal and/or turn the page! Thank you for the encouragement ❤️
Of course!
You are a wonderful teacher and inspiration. Thank you.
Thank you! 😊
Honestly, thank you very much. I was grinning as a little child the entire video, have given up on drawing 3 times in my life, and it was rather recently I went back to art fully determined to improve. I drew everyday, to the point I even developed the habit of drawing, which definitely counts as a victory.
Your advices have been a life-saver, this much I can tell. Despite how many times I had my confidence crushed by my incopetence, my passion was what drove me to continue, I stopped relying on feeble emotions in order to start any activity, and that changed my life for the better. I feel more determined now than ever to reach the level I aspire to reach, you've earned one more sub, teacher.
I’m almost 20 and I’ve been drawing since I could hold a pen. And I’m still learning so much about art!! My advice is to try all kinds of art, when you find the one that fits you, work on your skill everyday. Because art is the soul of the human being
Great advice!

You are so amazing!! Every word you say gets to me!!!
Always feel so positive and upbeat after watching and listening to your advice. You keep it simple and it makes so much sense. 🤙
You are one of the the most inspirational teachers I have ever had the privilege to come across . I sincerely hope you achieve your ambitions.
Thank you!
I needed this ty, biggest thing for me was to stop comparing myself to amazing artists, its hard not to, i see such wonderful perfect works of art and im like god damn i wanna be that guy, i attempt what they drew and i go god i suck i cant be like that guy, im not as good as him, did the same thing while learning piano, guitar, just kept comparing myself and trying harder material to learn and not giving myself enough time to fully learn each section of the piece or instrument/tools. But plus side is that i have been looking at my older drawings thinking like ive already made a huge difference i should keep going!
Huge motivational speech for me. Everything I needed to hear to stop feeling intimidated and just draw. Thank you for the inspiration!! 🙂.
You got this!
I’m so happy I found your channel….so many things (negative thoughts) have been keeping me from drawing and painting for the last several weeks. Feeling inadequate and like I’ll never be good enough. I started this journey as a way to relax, and just as a hobby to do something fun, but the anxiety has stolen that from me. Your words really helped put things back in perspective. Thank you so much. :-)
There is a traditional Japanese flute called a shakuhachi. There are shakuhachi teachers who direct their students to play one note (the low one) for a year. One note.
Thank you for being kind enough to explain, encourage and so honest!!
It's so ridiculous for us all to be expected to run before we can walk!!
Thank you for the writing things down, and motivational advice, I am having to learn how to draw with my left hand, and it's terrifying!!
Andrea, Jasper and George the Pigeon. XxX 💞🙋♀️🐕🦺🕊️💞XxX
Enjoy the walk, you'll get there! 💛
I am now binge-watching your videos as a new subscriber. Here's the thing. I don't want the money or accolades; never did. I just want to be good enough in my own eyes, to achieve what i set out to achieve. I also don't think VanGogh's early works were so awful. There is an honesty to one's early work that is often lost when one gets better at draftsmanship. I always grieve that loss. Maybe I'm just a weirdo but these are my thoughts as I watch your video. I loved when you showed us your self portraits - they were great - they had feeling and emotion. THAT is what i look for in art - does it move me to feel something? What you said about not comparing with others who you WISH you could be, but comparing yourself to yourself... that is golden. That is what I needed to hear today. Thank you.
This is the most motivating art video ever.
I'm gonna start my lower bar than ever and start from below.
Just as you've mentioned.
I was expecting things too high.
Patience. Learning is patience and persistence.
Thank you for this video! Your optimism and kindness is very motivating to grab that pen and start drawing. Wish me luck!
You can do it!
Greetings from Brazil!
I love your videos, thank you!
Danny is spot on. Thanks!
I have a great art corner i made. But there it sits. I draw nature with ink, i love what i do. But i procrastinate...and before i know it..its been months, or a year and my art supplies are dusty. I started watching your videos yesterday. I dont feel so intimidated anymore. I needed this video. Im going to clean my dusty treasures, and start a sketch book next week. ❤
This is a great great chat! Thank you so much! Never before have I felt the ‘wanting to start’ like I do now after hearing your message here. I now W a n t to sketch every day and the fear is not as gripping. Bless you!
Day 9 of sketching... 8 pages filled so far. Warming up to Inktober. Using a fine-tip Lamy Safari fountain pen with the package's blue ink. Still life of my pen and sketchbook, koi, my son's Sacher Torte birthday cake, Edward Hopper's empty room, and an acquaintance's Edward Hopperisch photo of Denny's booth, a photo of a bowl of ramen I made for my kids that have received 1,249 upvotes (likes), a blueberry cake sample we tried for my upcoming birthday with swatches from a Sakura brush pen set I hoarded years ago now, and today a landscape of Mt Fuji with a swatch from another set of brush pens from the hoard.
I REALLY needed to hear all this, Thanks!!! Love from Argentina!
I´ve been drawing in a sketchbook for the last two weeks and try to do it every day. I always wanted to get into physical art, but to be fair i was always afraid because i told myself i can´t do it. But a few weeks ago that changed and i committed to it. I´ve seen so much progress in even the smallest things but still sometimes think that i´m not at the stage i want to be yet or whatever. This video really helped and encouraged me to just keep goin, thanks a lot! Gonna pick up the sketchbook right now! :D
Thank you, thank you so much. I have such a deep deep desire to draw/sketch but yet have not one iota of ability. You've helped me to see that there is "hope for me." I feel very happy right now.
Always really encouraging. Thanks Danny
Glad to hear it!
Thank you for this! solid suggestions and I'm putting all these into my journal, and the cover of my brand new sketchbook arriving tonite!
Wonderful. Hope you enjoy that new sketchbook!
Thank you so much! As an inspiring artist, your kind words helped me to feel encouraged to pursue drawing again
Thank you so much!💕
Thankyou.
I stopped all my creativity about 2 years ago. And it's my passion so I thank the universe for finding this for me to watch when I really wasn't looking.
You've inspired me once again and that's priceless. THANKYOU
You provide an awesome perspective not only on art but on anything you are trying that is new. I'm buying How to Draw without Talent. Looking forward to the challenge but also enjoying the journey. Thanks for all the effort you put into creating and publishing your content. It is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for the video, very encouraging.
This was a very eye opening lesson. Thank you for your talent and patience to teach
Thank u for the advice
Glad you stopped by!
this is fantastic. Ive put off drawing for years because i felt it was a natural ability. I want to create my own animated kids show, specifically just for my kids to watch, laugh and enjoy, but always felt held back by the art side of it. (animating already existing art im improving on, but its not my own!)
thanks for this!
Just starting and came across your content. You, sir, are wonderful. I’ve binged so many of your videos - while drawing! You take the overwhelm out of the process. Keep making great content!
Awesome, thank you!
Wonderful, exciting advise. Thank you.
Dan, thank you! I really enjoy your reels. Your voice is so soothing with a definite ASMR satisfaction. I am 61 and I do love to draw and create. I have had an artist block now for ten years. I remember the 1st week of my block, and thinking OMG, I've gone too long. Then a year, then 5 years....etc. I am so inspired by you. I dusted off all my old sketch books and I feel ready. I too, like another viewer of yours, felt like I was making progress by buying more art supplies. 🙁
I'm going to get back in the game! I feel so inspired! You're the best! Thx
I love these helpful videos.
I'm so glad it was helpful, Decopainterandtea!
Great and inspiring suggestions. Thank you so much!
Thanks!
I just sat down after do something on my watercolor painting , feeling awful about it, when i saw this video.. came in the righttttt moment! Thank you so much!
Thank you for helping 💖💖💖
I started sketching this week after seeing one of your videos. It helps me be present and aware, for sure. Photography also works for me, but carrying a sketchbook in the car is more convenient than an expensive camera. Thanks.
I wish you lived in town. I'd take art lessons from you. You are so inspiring. Thank you.
Thank you!
Thank you. Means a lot to me to pursue what ive always wanted to do.
Thank you for this solid advice, I really needed this. You already motivated me to get into a sketchbook and I'll love it. What can I say, in a fan
Wow this was timely thank you for sharing this
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for making this video - I needed to hear this. Like you, I'm also teaching myself. I've just reached the stage where I can see where I've made 'mistakes' in some areas & I'm making notes on that page, but in other areas, I can't see where the mistakes are - I just know that it doesn't look right. I know that I'll get to being able to see where those mistakes are, probably sooner than I think.
Thank you for this. I just want to draw and paint all the time. But find that every time i get started he seems like people always need something. It feels like sabotage. Your voice is so soothing and calm. Thank you.
Thank you very much for this video , it gave me a bit more confidence to draw again , I couldn’t accept all my misshapen drawings or feeling it’s just not good enough! I will start tomorrow & try my best but, I won’t worry I’ll make a mistake because thats how I’ll learn to keep trying & I know I will because I’ve achieved other things in my life too !! Thanks again for you encouragement ! Helen Kirrage xxx
Thank you for this video
I love this channel, thank you!
Thanks man. you helped me now to not get frutraded at what im doing. i hope that in the future i (as a good artist i imagine) look at here and see how much i improved.
THANKS
Best of luck!
Thank you so much. I am taking a landscape design. I wouldn’t have taken it if I had realized how much drawing was involved. One night before class I actually panicked because we had to share our drawings. Some were great most were just about like mine. I lived another week to share and you are correct, they are getting better. Thank you!
Thank you for your videos, I suffer so much with comparing myself to others that in the end I stop painting, now I am back again and trying not to compare and self sabotage every day
This was life saving for me. Thank you
Thank you 💖
Hit every nail on the head. Have you been hiding somewhere in my head, witnessing everything I had gone thru?
Thank you, Danny. I'm looking at various tutorials online, but you are it for me when I need inspiration to draw. I'm doing it. I also like to write, and I'm enjoying your essays.
Thank you! I definitely needed to see this. Your voice is very soothing too!
Glad it was helpful!
Oh my gosh … he’s describing my situation … thank you for this video. I needed this advice.
You know, i've learned more from your videos in 2 days, than art school in 2 years. You explain everything so well. I love drawing but keep putting it off by saying, I just need to buy this certain art product then i'll start. It arrives and my brain wants another and another, because it is too scared to do any. I'm pretty ill, so i don't have the energy to as much, but it's this weird fear, that puts road blocks in the way. Then, it's choosing the subject. Your videos have just been so accurate. Thankyou firstly for understanding our issues and secondly, for offering advice and help. Now i need to see if you have a video on finding your own personal style, because most people have one and I just don't.
Thanks! Really helpful.
Amazing. Thank you so much.
I was drawing Danny as I was watching this. Great advice!
Another great video! Thank you
Wish I knew of you when I was going to art classes . I feel you would have been on my side.
Thank you! For your kind words and leading :-)
I really appreciate your continued positive reinforcement. It really keeps me moving forward and I can apply it more than art.
I'm so glad my words are helpful, Bill Heckman
Many many thanks Danny. Newly subscribed. Thanks for your superb motivational talks.
I'm so glad my words are helpful, Judith Burgess
Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️ You don't know how much your videos inspired me since I discovered them (yesterday). Just the right words✨ Saludos🇦🇷
You are so welcome!
Thank you very much🙏🏻the very motivation and thoughts i needed at the moment as a beginner. To focus on the process and my progress, not to compare myself on others who are already pros. 🙏🏻
Wonderful!
Thank you very much for the video.
Genius! Thanks a lot!!
Some great advice. Thanks
No solo voy a aprender a dibujar sino también practico mi inglés... Hablas muy claro! Me encanta❤❤😊
What a master class
thank you Sir.x
Love your videos! Very motivational and realistic.
Glad you like them!
Thank you so much! That was very helpful!
You're welcome!
I Been drawing on and off most of my life, sadly less and less as the years go by. I own iPad, Cintiq 22, oil, watercolour etc. everytime I want to create I cling to buying something cause I get so much anxiety of not knowing what to create.
I don’t know why I come back to art, each time I battle through anxiety to get started.
Today I started to draw beans in my sketchbook I haven’t touched for years. I then started to draw eyes on the beans.
Drawing is an expression of life, and it’s a very hard thing to look at life closely but the best thing we can do.
Your perspective on drawing really is an inspiration
Another valuable video! TFS 💯🙏🙌
This is one of your best videos ever! Thanks!
Glad you think so!
I have had drawing and painting classes in college and learned nothing. Your videos are renewing my desire to learn and grow in art. I just wanted to say thank you
My pleasure 😊
Thank you so much
I think deep down we all want be great at what we do. I also think we know deep down what it requires. You mentioned that for a year you worked with one pen and/or one subject. Getting the basics down (the music scales til your fingers bleed, the free throws long after practice is over, a chef working on one dish over and over, etc.). After this video, I will put a long term plan in place. A year or two on the basics. Simple objects. One medium. I’m 59 now. Maybe by age 70 I’ll start to make some progress. Maybe by 80 I’ll see my work on others walls. Thank you for the honest and inspiring content here on CZcams. New subscriber.
The destination matters but so does enjoying the journey. Imagine how great it will be to spend the rest of your life doing something you enjoy!
@@SketchBookSkool yes! That journey for me has brought me home to help my parents enjoy their remaining years. I’m trying to remember the “drawing rabbit hole”. Pandemic, parents, stop watching the news, go to Hobby Lobby and find a hobby, pencil drawing looks like fun and it’s cheaper than collecting most things, etc.
This is such à great video and i love your person - greetings from a french girl living in germany- i follow you with great intérest
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much!!!
I would like to hug you! 🥲
Thank you very very much🙏🏻 for your inspiring, for your experience, for your videos! I knew its possible and... Yes, i'm an artist who can't draw! But i want to! Thank you ❤️
Reaching for my sketch book after watching your motivational video - Keep being you 🙏👊
Enjoy your sketching!
Thank you for all positive thoughts you teaching me... you are the best.
Happy to help!
