Y'all, I suggested the character name "Old Man Blair" to the Southern Things crew because I thought it would be funny. Lol! I didn't know what they were gonna do with it, so I was caught off guard by the hilarity, when they came up with a seasoning called Old Man Blair's Butt Rub". Haha!
Old Man Blair's Butt Rub sounds like a legitimate Southern product that was originally meant for rump roast but turned out to be great on all kinds of meat.
"Do you have a quarter? You'll get it back when you return the dish." I'm wrecked! And the wine glass! To be fair, Big Lots does sell a fair amount of real groceries.

Ours has a self checkout the a worker has to watch you check out. Defeats the point of having a self checkout that you have use an employee. Waiting for them to come because they’re the only one in the store, hovering over you. I don’t like to there because there isn’t personal space, the people are just doing their jobs, but my husband goes because it’s a few minutes down the road.
I used to work at Dollar General. stuff would always show up in random places. usually after you had reported that you were out. That was spot on! lol. And they never allow enough payroll to keep someone at the register.
I was in a DG last week. 1 person working, self checkout closed, a long line and he ran out of bags. Didn’t think to check out the gourmet food section.

I had to stock shelves and do register at the same time because corporate refuses to employ enough people to actually run the store. Its why everything is always a mess and why you can't find an employee when you need one. They have to do everything and get paid shit so why should employees even care? I also had to once clean up poop off the ground in the front entrance because DG has the habit of attracting the weirdest customers. The assistant manager on duty quit the next day. It was bad. I only worked there because it was in walking distance and needed the money for school. Also despite the fact that we were "supposed" to be the "best and cleanest" DG store in the county, the store eventually closed down because corporate didn't want to renew the lease to the building. I'm never going back to a Dollar General again. 🙄

Sure, Old Man Blair's is always great for elevating proper BBQ pulled pork but everyone knows its fantastic "secret" is preventing everyday chafing, if you know what I mean. The flavor changed when they switched to plastic containers but no one believes me except people my age. I keep two open bottles on hand and one at the back of the cupboard hidden away so I never accidentally run out. I will never forget the Summer of '72 when there was a nationwide shortage. I still get PTSD flashbacks and occasional nightmares: Despite my careful rationing that year, I ran out and couldn't get any for two straight weeks in July. Never again.

Half the time when arriving at Arby's, sorry for the "s", someone returning a cart just passes it on to you. Even if I did have to give the quarter, I've never gotten one back. On a side note, they do have quality products at generally reasonable prices.

texas has a Scottish comunity! or so i heard on the late Craigh Ferguson show. but yeah, look for a medium sized town with lots of social events and a few stand up comedy clubs, and you should be good!

I'm just glad to see a sketch. I may have missed them but they seem to be rare these days. The dollar general was real. Sometimes the manager is the stocker, otherwise it's usually the cashier. Just ring the bell, they'll come running when they get ready.
The dollar general part was so unrealistic he never would’ve hung up the phone he would’ve stayed on the phone while he rang you up and you were missing the rap music blasting out of a literal boom box next to the cashier I swear it’s true it happened to me. 😂😂😂
This was very fun. I go to a 24 hour play festival every year and it's exactly like this with drawing random genres and quotes from a hat and writing a brand new play.

DG has a grocery isle and freezer case. About like a bigger gas station or a campground store, but they do have food. Big Lots has bread and snack food and sometimes a crate of old canned goods falls off the truck. Aldi however presents like a truck of stuff heading for Dollar General crashed into one for Kroger...so they dragged the boxes into the store and you may root through them. Yep this is fair comedy.
I've never been to Big Lots or Aldi but Dollar Generals are everywhere in my area and I am proud to say that that is my exact experience whenever I go in any of those stores
Would love to see you guys perfect this format. I think more work will only make things better. Plus, it's really unique and adds community interaction, which is always great!

This reminds me of those 'Dollar Tree on a budget' CZcamss which I give them credit for trying. Before they went cheap, I used to eat fish, eggs, vegetables, oatmeal, and smoothies made from the Dollar Tree (I used to buy everything there, even salmon, and lost 7 sizes but that was before Covid).
Very funny, but also a very sharp analysis of retail in America - Big Lots selling shoddy plastic merchandise as "luxury" (only in a trailer park trapped in the 1950s), Dollar General (and other discount stores) whose employees are rarely helpful (or present) because they are so overworked (small staff means more money for the bigwigs) or because they just really don't care. Aldi, well I have only shopped there twice; not unpleasant, but not "knock my socks off" great, so I reserve judgement. But, as usual, y'all produced a great video! Thank you😊
This is so scary accurate. I cannot recall ever entering a Dollar General where the cashier was actually ready to help me check out (50% time they were also on their personal cell). And as much as I adore Aldi, I too have forgotten a quarter and been massively frustrated. Also, I love Big Lots, but I go in with the mindset of having no idea what I'll find inside. Your creativity and get-it-done is insane!!
I keep a quarter in my cupholder. The only time it ever leaves the car is when I'm at Aldi, and then it goes right back there. I might forget and have to walk back across the parking lot for it, but I always have a quarter. And my shopping bags live in the back of the car, so I never have to remember to take them with me. Because I will NOT remember.
