Axis: a new concept from S&S - Sansei putting new spin on coasters

- Coming off a Best New Coaster Golden Ticket win in 2019, S&S - Sansei Technologies has taken years of innovation and engineered a dramatic new concept in roller coasters. Dubbed Axis, this new genre of steel coasters has hints of previous creations threaded into its core but feels like nothing ever manufactured to date. Top brass is beaming at the monumental leap in coaster design - and they should be. Axis is impressive in multiple ways.
“It has been part of a concept we’ve had for quite a while. This last development has been going on for about two and a half years,” said Merin Swasey, project development manager, S&S. “Today’s computer-aided design and engineering analysis tools enable us to do something like this particular coaster. It’s a whole new concept.”
A test track of several hundred feet adjacent to company headquarters in Utah has seen the concept come to life, meeting every expectation and validating each calculation. S&S can boast it is now proven.
Using comfortable vest restraints as seen on the company’s 4D Free Spin, seating on Axis places riders on an elevated swivel with feet dangling above the track. Depending on the bank and swoop of the curves, the speed initiates swing, flips or a sensation of flight.
I could see this working as some kind of air fighter themed coaster.
Top gun 2 is out sooner then later.. sooo
Star Wars Tie fighters incoming
@@Silacide
expect disney to add this to star wars land in Paris or a new park
ImpaledBerry Disney adding good rides in Paris? Haha good one 🤣 It’ll probable be for the others yeah
This is exactly what Disney needed for galaxies edge. Can you imagine???
This is how we bring back arrow swinging coasters. I love it!
Ryne Luecht
Speaking of which, it would be really cool for S&S to bring back the old Arrow name and logo (if legally possible.) Schwarzkopf coasters are highly revered, but IMHO Arrow deserves some love as well
Big Bad Wolf on steroids
An interesting way to localize the heartline roll.
Kings Dominion... hint hint... this could be a worthy replacement for Volcano.
This would be kind of a good edition though because Volcano was an invert. This is a combination of a sit-down and an invert. It would fill a gap in Kings Dominion’s line up.
We dont want another S+S prototype at KD.
Rollercoaster Dude Haha, Good point.
@@droptrackthrills8773 Massive 300ft+ T-rex in a few years would be pretty sweet.
Joe Fitzpatrick like the idea but, they already have i305 and if it were 300-400 ft it would be too close to i305. I still think it would be a good fit though
my jaw dropped! Can't wait to see what this develops into. They smashed it with Maxx Force at my home park!
Isn’t that just a further development of “Tranan” in Sweden? It’s cool though!
That was my first thought as well.
Pretty much. Main 2 differences tho are the track and the train... This one inverts while the other one doesn't.
And in a way an extension of the idea of the 4d coaster. Whoever will build the first one, I hope they care just as much about theming as they do about the ride themselves cause the near miss collision feeling is going to be nuts looking at the way the train moved when it went down and then swung to the left.
Doesn't really seem like it, no. Actively controlled seats Vs just swinging is a massive difference, to the point that I don't think they're comparable both in how they work and what they can offer. Otherwise you could also claim that LIM launches are "just" an evolution of drop hills.
I really want Cedar Fair to build Large-scale versions of these.
PLEASE SAY THIS IS GOING IN PLACE OF VOLCANO AT KINGS DOMINION!!! OMG.
Volcano: Re-Erupted
@@alsocoasters2170 I was thinking "Vulcan", which is the Roman God of Fire (and volcanoes). They could totally pay homage to Volcano and give it a whole story line. Something like, "In 1998, The God of Fire mastered the art of his magmatic power with Volcano: The Blast Coaster. In 2018, his power was met with defeat.....but now, he's back to reclaim his title. In 2021....the rise of Vulcan will be greater than ever". DUUUUUUDE. A FUCKING CONCEPT.
Put it where vortex was at Kings island
I would expect a more large layout this is
VERY cloneable
That would be so Hot 🔥
S&S has been doing some really innovative stuff lately, and I really hope they continue doing it.
Awesome. New type of coaster that will be all over the world someday. Brilliant invention. Can't wait to ride one.
This is pretty cool, but i would like to see a totally redesigned suspended coaster. A new generation. Big Bad Wolf 2.0
Been saying for years, an inverted/suspended hybrid
Wow that looks crazy! Imagine one that was 200+ ft tall, on the scale of a 4D coaster!
What you just described is Eejanaika at Fuji Q.
@@gregcharles3240 It's a little different
*COUGH COUGH* Cedar Point *COUGH COUGH* xD
@@benxyb2791 We wish
@@ejectoraircoasters222 It's different to really anything else in the world. It's kinda like a launched suspended coaster but it isn't at the same time. I want to call this a swaying coaster. Not a suspended coaster, not a sit down coaster, somewhere in between.
S&S is probably one of the best coaster makers now they are putting out great coasters everywhere! I would love to see sfog get something from S&S
I never thought i'd see the day when gimbals and coasters merged, but here we are.
If Magic Kingdom had built Fire Mountain, this is what the coaster look like. It was supposed to be a standard sit down coaster, but then Midway through it would turn into a suspended/ flying coaster
It would also have to become a boat ride and a drop ride.
Had this idea when i was about 16. So bout 16 years ago. Except i envisioned it spinning in circles while it plummets you straight down at 90 degrees
My God...
The UK needs this.
I actually thought of this Concept years ago, Amazing to see it come to Life 😁
Looks awesome! Can’t hardly wait to see the final product!
My mind is blown by this. There's so much potential in this concept!
I love that they build prototypes so much.
This is something that should be done more often.
It used to basically always be. Too many things that could've been perfected are shoved up nowadays and turn out to need work or be problematic from day 1 to the end of there days.
I also like they have revisited several things here: 4D/free spinning to a totally different level, up and over the track (I actually wonder if the vekoma merger sorta thing is the reason for the more one side to another style track look/concept), and also the arrow suspended design. Let's not forget "Tranan," the just too low capacity ride that is unique and cool but really doesn't work outside of a small park/as not a family ride.
This is so ironic, in that I had a similar idea for an identical, swinging/invert coaster years ago that many of my buddies said could NEVER be feasible due to all the engineering difficulties and metallurgy stresses you’d need to overcome...and yet, here it is - as a freely operating test mule! S&S must have the best individual engineers on the friggin’ planet to have figured out how to get over all those high hurdles.
Great job! I hope to ride it in the not-too-distant future...
OH MY GOODNESS THAT IS SO COOL!!!!
I was always thinking it would be a good idea to do this with the seven dwarfs mine train trains and I'm so happy it's happening!
That looks like so much fun! :D
Introducing, Vertical G’s: The Ride
Looks a lot smoother than traditional 4D coasters which is great, those things look juddery as hell.
The Air Force would pay top dollar to have something like this! It’s that crazy!
Please get something like this at universal studios or Busch gardens 😍
That looks incredible. I am really exited which park will get the first Prototyp. May I use you footage in an analysis I would like to make about the Coaster? I will give you full credit.
At first look, all I can imagine is a Harry Potter Gringotts Bank Themed Ride utilizing this track and design! Brings back super nostalgia to the PlayStation Harry Potter Game
Please Busch Gardens make a Bigger Badder Wolf with this.
I'm rather skeptical that this design will pan out. It reminds me of Arrow's suspended prototype The Bat. Great in theory, but the stresses of regular operation make it impossible to safely and economically maintain.
While I agree, it's not entirely fair to compare it to The Bat. It's main issue was a lack of banking on the track. A slight adjustment in the design lead to an excellent style of coaster. That's why they don't just dive in and build new coaster types like that anymore. They spend years prototyping them to verify that they are going to work before one is ever built in a park.
Plus The Bat's failure lead to the creation of one of the best custom loopers to take it's spot at King's Island. RIP Vortex....
This looks like an operational nightmare honestly. Fun concept though.
Great video. Thanks for posting this. Have a nice day.
Not going to lie, this makes me want to go to the first one made...let me know which park and when and i will be there.
I love coasters but as i get older and they keep pushing the limits..i realize i dont wanna die doing this one thing i love.
This could be the new Inverted since the last B&M one is a loop machine (Banshee). A layout with floater hills and the twisting elements with leg choppers would be cool. This could replace Volcano at KD. Doesn't need to have the launch straight up, but get to the top and go through a mountain with multiple launches and 5k feet of track so it's a full length ride.
This is weird but cool.. I wonder what park will get it first .
Imagine having this as a Starwars rollercoaster themed to a firefighter battle
Star Wars and fire fighters are a weird mashup
Now this is just amazing.
The track looks more exiting than the actual ride itself
There’s a coaster with a similar concept in Europe. Wanna say Sweden? I love the concept and hope it’s made popular!
Edit. It is Sweden. The rollercoaster is Tranan and is also manufactured by S&S
It’s like a combination of X2 at six flags magic mountain and tranas in Sweden
wow! truly amazing
Hmm, you know, with the removal of Vortex, Kings Island will have a nice plot of land. Right where the very first suspended coaster used to sit. Really gets the ole noodle doodling.
Naw a RMC Son of Beast should happen.
Oh this is soo cool.
🔥🔥🔥
Very cool!
Wow. Short and sweet !!
This is just the prototype. The finished version is usually much longer. Now they did include an airlaunch and when they made the 4d free spin prototype they pushed it off a hill so I'm not sure if it'll have a launch (though I suspect it will) I'm sure parks will want something that is at least 1000-1500ft with enough blocks. I also imagine there'll be more cars and/or rows.
@@AmusementLabs It would be great for smaller parks. Could be game changer for them.
@@ejf0255 they can probably easily stay within the footprint shown here to keep it nice and compact. Instead it can make an immelman or dive loop style element then swing around a bit more.
The way it was build makes the drive smooth. But do you want to drive smooth with a coaster ?
What if those arms dont pull the seat up at the part where the track is on the ground? Ouch.
Nothing would happen the track inverts back before
@@poopedonyourchest799 So the track has grooves in it or something that control how the coaster mechanism moves?
Nice coaster!
CEDAR FAIR SHOULD BUY THIS AND OPEN IT AT KNOTT'S BERRY FARM
NO ROOM.
They wouldn’t
lmao they have no room. it's going to kings Dominion or kings island
@@Clay3613 GIRL I- Are you kidding me? Knott's has plenty of room. They can remove half of those flat rides in Fiesta Village and build a new coaster in that spot. They can also remove a lot of the backstage's they have near Ghost Rider and expand Ghost Town which would easily fit a S&S coaster in that area.
Jahz D that’s not gonna happen
Slick Rick !
That looks so fun to ride
Looks awesome!!
I love the concept, however, I find it confusing about the G forces.
My eyes will follow the track and expect something but get the opposite. Can’t wait to try it, though
Wow!! Looks cool! Can you make a mega version of your 4D freespins in the near future? It should have a full 3 or 4 tiers!
It looks like something intamin would do
Yes love this
The future is exciting
Those steel tube holding it could snap with all those maneuvers.
This would make some great "cliffhanger" moments - at the top of a hill, the train slowly dangling you over into space.
It’s like X/X2 at Magic Mountain, but workable
Looks like fun
This is awesome!
Yes please...
I wanna ride this! NOW!!!!
I literally came up with this idea 5 years ago
how this coaster go from launch, to flying, to sit-down, to invert and then back to sit-down
wow this looks awesome
I could see something like this at Cedar Point where the old Sandcastle Hotel was!
Imagine this paired with VR and a Top Gun theme.
Possibly whats being built at lagoon right now 🤔
Looks amazing.
Bring back the old Arrow Dynamics who agrees.
Put it in Florida!
Wow I hope one actually gets built somewhere
Sad times there will be no S&S Sky Swat. That was my favourite flat ride. The Sky Swing comes second.
I think this would be better if the forces can be controlled or at least slowed down a little. Swinging wildly greatly reduces the number of people that will ride since it makes many people sick, and personally for me, spinning is just not enjoyable at all. That's why the Free Spin sucks. Sure, kids love it. I guess part of the sensation of this coaster would be similar to loops as well, and the same above can be applied to endless loops.
ALTON TOWERS GET THIS PLEASE!
Don’t they have this similar concept of the trains in the form of a wild mouse already I believe it’s in France somewhere 🤔🤔either way I’m excited for this to truly develop!
You might be thinking about drift coaster by Reverchon. I think this is an upgrade of Tranan in Sweden.
Magic Mountain is getting this, take that Cedar Point.
The concept is similar to X that ride they have there although it looks like there's no computer guided turning of the seats. Pretty cool stuff.
I wonder what cedar point is getting for 2020 if they are getting anything
But Is it really tho?
Haha, Magic Mountain is for losers.
@@lemonade2539 they aren't. 2020 is gonna be celebrations and prepping for 2021's big announcement
I could see Six Flags adding this to 1 of their parks in 2021.
That‘s something else
This reminds me of the planet coaster swinging mine train creations
My bet is that it'll be used for Civil War at Disney's California adventure so each car is an Avenger. I completely made that up and have no facts to back it up. And now I leave to watch more theme park videos. (flies away)
Does this mean that there can only be one car at a time? Does this also mean that there is a possibility of more inverted launches?
No. Yes.
Is that music at the end from the 80's? it's not bad considering it's kinda cheesy. BTW the coaster looks pretty great to me.
If another Arrow Suspended bites the dust (which I really hope doesn't happen), this would be a great replacement.
i see this being an indoor coaster with a lot of room for theming
Will they ever invent a roller coaster where you the rider controls the pitch of the seat. Like on X to where the seats move back-and-forth you’ll be awesome if you and rider can control which way the seat moves
Reminds me of thrillville
wow
This is the grown-up version of Tranan in Sweden
PLEASE come to Great Adventure
saw it in person on oct 24
If this thing goes wrong heads will come off !
Amazing engineering accomplishment and exciting to see. Respect to S&S. AND I just want to be educated on how this really is an innovation of the on-ride experience. I get it as a breakthrough optically as an attraction, but what about the ride experience itself.
Off ride it’s beautiful and attractive. AKA an attraction. 😉 . You want to get on it and it can attract folks to the park with shiny and bright. However on-ride when you see the track twisting around and you not or visa versa it’s kinda disorienting IMO.
Call me crotchety, but for me the on ride experience is key. The Axis and other multi;axis rides are lukewarm. The brain is disrupted for sure with the optics of the track having a separate axis from the seat, AND those types of rides tend to annoy me. I am NOT an enthusiast but love what RMC has done after riding SV. What makes RMC the innovation is the curve and tightness without compromising the optics of your brain. AND the ability to bank out and away without shoulder restraints. AND the smoothness of the ride. AND the ability to leverage existing structure. I simply do not see the appeal. Seems like a step backward. Height and Speed. Tight Gs or Air. The formula seems simple. This seems like competing poles and nullification.
Holy shit! Six flags will buy that shit for a million.
