  • A new medium for me to play with, casein has been around a long time. I'm playing around with a set of Richeson's Casein paints plus the Casein Emulsion. Just be sure to paint on a rigid surface so it doesn't crack. This piece is done on an artist's masonite board prepped with a coat of Liquitex Clear Gesso, and pre-drawn using water-soluble graphite.
    Colours used:
    Titanium White
    Cadmium Yellow Light
    Rose Red
    Ultramarine Blue Deep
    Burnt Umber
    plus Casein Emulsion medium and water!

    Nicely done, Angela. I especially appreciate how you managed to include your subject photo, mixing pallet and canvas (all) in the camera`s viewfinder. It makes it much more interesting to watch an artist work-up his/her paintings with this filming technique. Thank you for sharing your lovely work in this age-old medium !

    Casein paints seems like a lazy painters dream, I'm so lazy i dont wanna go anywhere near oil paints because of all the extra stuff one needs to deal with oil paints, I'm also afraid to ruin my brushes XD but i've always loved the look of it ... sighs :") these seem lovlely and also a lovely painting!!

    I really appreciate this video Angela! I've been doing plenty of videos on gouache and oil, but just recently tried out casein and there aren't a lot of videos here on youtube on the subject. Really beautifully done painting as well! I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your videos :)

    Thank you so much for this, I have an inkling to try casein painting and your video has inspired me to try it out.

    Beautiful work and great tutorial. I'm considering trying casein paints. I was going to use it on regular watercolor paper or on canvas. Masonite board is a good idea and lends itself well to your final still life portrait.

      Use 300# watercolor paper. Canvas should be affixed to a masonite panel or the paint will crack.

    does casein have the same property that gouache has where the value range compresses when dry? i.e. darks get lighter and lights get darker?

    • @abandurkaart
      @abandurkaart  Před 4 lety +2

      I haven't noticed that, but I have noticed that the colour isn't as vibrant. It's just fun to play with new mediums so I'm always experimenting, but I'm not the definitive answer on casein. I've only just started playing with it in the last two years, but I enjoy it!

      I will try to get on that! Sorry, I go through phases and I had put my casein away but I am getting the itch again, so I'll have to give it a go again :)

    Wow, looks great!. If I didnt saw the title I would have thought it was an oil painting. Have you tried acrylic gouache? If so, how do you think it compares to casein?

    • @abandurkaart
      @abandurkaart  Před 3 lety

      Yes, but acrylic gouache is just a matte acrylic, and I do love painting in gouache and acrylic as well, so they're fun to use as well.

  • @DivineMisterAdVentures

    What a great eye - and what a privilege to watch you paint - and very effective presentation BTW - that time-lapse speedup is a cool effect for speed painting. So if we were peers (in a class) - the thing I love most is how 3D the cup appears, and that would make me look critically at the lighting to see why the plate and the 'canvas' overall seems flat by comparison - I would think just to tweak it via a more focused light* ... and ... it's just great. *(Do you think?)

    Thank you Angela, very good video. What varnish do you use to protect your casein paintings?

    • @abandurkaart
      @abandurkaart  Před 5 lety +2

      I let my painting dry for a few weeks then varnish it with a Krylon UV Archival Spray Varnish in the finish (usually matte for casein).

    Does casein dry slower than gouache? Is there a 5 to 10 minute window for blending without diluting it? Could one add casein emulsion to gouache to slow down the drying time?

    • @abandurkaart
      @abandurkaart  Před 4 lety

      Not really, it is very fast drying, and can definitely work with blending in a 5-10 min window if you really wanted to, but working quicker is better. I personally wouldn't add casein emulsion to my gouache, but I don't have any technical information on it. I just don't like to mix different media, personally. I like the faster drying time, and when I want a slower dry time I just use oils... but I know that's not an option for everyone.

    where can i find or get this paint from an medium from?

    • @abandurkaart
      @abandurkaart  Před 5 lety

      Some folks like to make it themselves, but I use Richeson. They make a casein that is easy to work with :) You can usually find it at some of the larger art supply stores in the US. Not sure about international art supply stores, sorry!

  • @UConceptPublishing

    I know you use the emulsion but, can you spray the casein on your palette to prevent them from drying up?

    • @abandurkaart
      @abandurkaart  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi! Do you mean, spray the casein on the palette, or spray the palette with water? The first wouldn’t work as I believe the emulsion would be too viscous to spray, you could spray with water but it’s probably best to just squeeze out a good amount and keep working with the paint as is (if you have a good blob of paint it stays wetter longer).

    • @ptaylor4923
      @ptaylor4923 Před 3 lety

      I pour some of my emulsion into a small crafts bottle with a very narrow tip. When I start, I can squeeze just a little in each pile of color & stir with a toothpick. It loosens it up. I then put a little pile of emulsion on the pallet that I can go to when I want with my brush. Always put the cap back on your bottle or a piece of tape to keep it fresh. I'm a slow painter & if dries fast which makes me crazy. I do have a fine mister that I can moisten the paint as I go along. But I also live in Los Angeles where it's hot and dry. 😱 I have a humidifier that I can turn on for a bit on really hot dry days, but then I have to protect my watercolor paintings if they're out. I do love casein. Richeson has good information on their site, too.

    you're not handling a single toxic pigment...why the gloves? It's like painting with a bike helmet on.

    • @abandurkaart
      @abandurkaart  Před 5 lety +6

      Hi, @ArtinArt, I use gloves all the time and it feels weird to paint without them now. We owe it to ourselves to take care of ourselves :) I actually do use a lot of toxic pigments, as well - Cadmiums are used in nearly all of my works. I know other folks who just use a Barrier Cream, so if you'd rather not use gloves, I'd suggest getting in the habit of using that at least. No judgement from me however, everyone has to make their own decisions on it. Thanks for asking :)

    • @ptaylor4923
      @ptaylor4923 Před 3 lety

      Actually, she is. Casein emulsion has trisodium phosphate. It can be harmful so don't eat or drink while you're using it. (Since I'm incapable of following this advice, I keep handy wipes nearby and wipe my hands before I pick up my coffee mug, which I keep separate anyway after confusing it with my rinse mug and almost drinking that . 🙄🤭)
