  • Welcome to ‪@OutOfDevOps‬ in this episode, we dive into a book that I'm currently reading, "Culture Code" by Daniel Coyle.
The book aims to answer the question: "Why do certain groups add up to be greater than the sum of their parts while others add up to be less?" To illustrate this, the book starts with an experiment conducted by Peter Skillman with various groups of people, including lawyers, CEOs, business school students, and even kindergartners. The goal of the experiment was to build the tallest tower using only uncooked spaghetti, tape, string, and a marshmallow, with the marshmallow on top of the construction. The surprising winner of the contest was the group of kindergartners, despite their lack of communication skills and constant bumping into each other during the experiment.
The experiment revealed that all groups, except for the kindergartners, were focused on "status management" rather than problem-solving. This emphasizes the importance of identifying and addressing issues related to communication and hierarchy in a team, as it can lead to a toxic work environment and a dysfunctional team.
The author highlights three key concepts to establish a positive team culture: building safety, sharing vulnerabilities, and establishing purpose. Without these, a team may focus on the wrong aspects and fail to address the root cause of their issues.
So, I encourage you to reflect on the culture within your company and whether you notice any patterns that may indicate a dysfunctional team. Have you tried to fix them? I'd love to hear your opinions in the comments section. Thank you for watching, and I look forward to seeing you in the next episode of "Out of DevOps"!
