Welcome to Animation for Anyone. In our second class I'll explain the three biggest ideas in Animation and how they can help you use all the other principles more easily. Hope you enjoy!
Also a small correction, I incorrectly named the producer of the example film Lost and Found as Lucy Haynes when in fact her name is Lucy Hayes. Apologies about that, and thanks again to the team for letting me share their work here.
A note on software:
We don't touch on software in this class because I believe there are already lots of great tutorials out there but if you're interested in low cost options to get started there are a few that come to mind- Blender is a free 3D package and includes a "Grease Pencil" mode if you're interested in learning 2D animation. Procreate on IOS is inexpensive and has new animation features (simply turn on Animation Assist in the canvas menu). Adobe Creative Cloud suite is certainly not "low cost" but some of you may have access to it for other uses. If that is the case Photoshop and Animate CC both offer powerful animation tools and will be included in your Creative Cloud Membership. I have an in depth, but quite old tutorial for using Photoshop as animation tool here vimeo.com/80851591
Love this series, Alex! ❤❤
Bro any software
Wow, you are the modern day GOAT of animation. I heard your name for years, so many people learned to animate in Photoshop from you. And now, the world has access to an amazing curriculum to get into animation. Thank you!
Haha I'm glad you found the Photoshop class useful! It was the inspiration for making this series.
Ye
I teach an introductory animation class and have always wanted to make a freely available version... glad you're already doing that for me! This is absolutely where I'd try and start (and constantly return to) with my students.
Hey thanks Mitchell. This concept was mentioned to me in passing at university but I didn't understand it until much later. I wish I got my head around it earlier :)
Henrique Barone said in one of his classes, "Timing is when it happens and Spacing is where it happens. Timing describes 'what' is happening and spacing describes 'how' it's happening."
I'm slowing trying to find my way back into animation and I'm intimidated and excited at the same time. Its magical and that's why it's so terrifying. This helps A LOTTT. Nothing has to happen to move me to animate, I can just animate a line and call it a day. Thanks Alex!
That's an interesting way for Henrique to put it :) I'm glad you're enjoying the classes!
I'm always tempted to adjust the spacing between the frames, but this is a great reminder of how to prioritise
It's soooo tempting!
This is incredible, any other animation introduction I’ve seen always goes straight into all the stuff like appeal and squash and stretch, I’m a person who likes to learn by getting in and toying around and it’s always just been overwhelming, but this seems way more manageable.
Other channels also inform about great ideas but what sets your channel apart is that it doesn't feel like a best random tips you never should know about video. It's more akin to a course which guides you in creating a mindset about animation. I hope you continue to make videos like this one. Maybe make one video about how crucial drawing is in clarifying your thoughts because without drawing you don't have an anchor. Many CZcamsrs say it's not necessary to learn how to draw. I feel like it's crucial if you want to free your mind and not reiterate needlessly.
You know you've got animation figured out when even your example of poor spacing is appealing. :P Good stuff, Alex!
Love this series! hoping to see more in the future for sure. Alex Grigg thank you for putting these up and producing this. I will be able to share it with my team as well as we are a young animation studio just starting out. Cheers!
Your videos are really precious, I’ve been practicing animation for around 2 years now and your summary really helps me fine tune the process and simplify everything down, thank you so so much 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I like your examples for studying posing, timing, and spacing in the real world to guide our animations :D
Incredible stuff here - thank you for the classes, Alex! Can't wait for more :}
It's good to discover these tutorials so well done, it has helped me to understand more easily what animation is. Thank you so much.
"Animation for everyone", you are a so talented artist and a so generous person, Gosh bless you!
These fundamentals like timing and spacing are the hardest to understand and practice for me and I usually forget the posing step. Your explaination and application methods are super useful for us beginners! You are awesome! I wish you the bestest of the bests!
i love this channel
its so nice having someone explaining it to you at a pace where it feels like a conversation, plus the structure of examples and the “work together” portions are perfect

Learning the language (jargon) of any specialty is the most difficult part. This video illustrates the vocabulary brilliantly. Thank you!
I had learn these myself but the 3rd one realy helped clear up what i was currently thinking i needed
I've been always interested in animation, I've done some really simple short animations but I wasn't really sure if its good and I wanted to take it to the next level but I knew I wasn't ready because the knowledge was missing even though I watched many videos, or took animation courses they didn't give me what I really needed. The way they taught wasn't really good compared to what you're offering here. Thank you very much for your time and effort, I found you through Instagram and these videos really work for me. BEST OF LUCK
These lessons are amazing 🙌 thank you Alex

amazing!
Grim Natwick always said it all boils down to timing and spacing. One could argue that posing is a sub-topic of spacing. Great video!
That's cool. I heard it described that way at animation school but I tend to disagree. Spacing is the relationship between poses over time. Poses are like the molecules of animation and we need to arrange them in a meaningful way. They certainly aren't subservient to either spacing or timing. Removing the ambiguity of that was one of the reasons I wanted to start this channel actually.
@@AlexGriggAnimation I understand your point, but in any given set of drawings there are differences in spacing between, for example, body parts. It’s not unusual to see multiple spacing charts on any given key drawing: one for the torso, one for the arms, etc. Following those spacing charts leads to the breakdown and in between poses. That’s all I’m suggesting.
After having wanted to learn animation for years I think I’m going to buy tv paint and use these courses to try to learn. Thanks for everything.
This is very exciting to hear. If you search for my Vimeo page I have a beginners guide to tvpaint up there which might be helpful.
one useful information I learned for studying movment in youtube is that you can move the videos frame be frame using the "," and "." buttons to do so.
Thanks for the video>
Thanks!
Thank you ☺
Hey I really loved all your videos
Especially for beginners, you are just a blessing!
Thank you so much for such valuable content...
