Something that I wish James would also mention dealing with when it would come to commission work (something that one of my art professors in college helped simulate for one of my classes to help students prepare) is coming across Karen customers, where you can make something over and over and it still wouldn't fit to what they're looking for.
That class in college pretty much discouraged me away from making commission work for my art because it felt the really draining and mental health depleting, and was starting to ruin my enjoyment of making art/drawing... 0_0
As a voice actor, hearing people say “stop complaining, it’s just talking into a microphone. It’s easy” makes me angry. It is not just that. It’s finding people who will pay you enough so you can live for at least a month, making sure you get the voice down and don’t kill your voice from, possibly over 80 attempts, saying one sentence and making sure that all of it is perfect and it sounds like a natural conversation, not some dude sitting in his bedroom talking to himself. Entertainment and animation is hard, and I hate how not a lot of people understand it. Also, I’d love to see how the animation pipeline works. I wanna see how they can get drawing to move like their real so seamlessly
EXACTLY! I've been trying to audition for VA. It's not easy. At all.
You need to get your voice down pat, make sure it doesn't hurt you, it's a lot of acting because you have to say the same sentence over 20xs trying to get it correctly. You are a genuine actor. The only difference is that the public doesnt see you.
Hell, up until the 2000s, no one noticed voice actors like they do now but now many travel. It's the rise of the internet.

As a small animator, I appreciate that he tells the truth about art/animation. It does take months just for a 5 second video. Artists are misunderstood!

Yeah. Animations are pretty hard
Interesting to note that this high ratio of time=output is consistent across other artistic areas too! E.g. as an event photographer/videographer, editing photos always takes at LEAST 2x as long as the actual event, often 3x? And that's just selecting best still shots, weeding out crappy ones, cropping & contrast clean-up as required. If you have to process video clips, add any effects or text, extract sound bytes etc... Generally you'd be looking at @least 3x the event length, minimum.
Once you start putting together CZcams-type content with mixed stills, edited video clips, sound effects, texts & animations.... you could easily end with anywhere between 100:1 and 200:1 ratio of creation time to final content duration, in my experience. I'm skeptical about whether most people who watch YT vids realize just how much post-processing time & effort is involved with each of a creator's uploads...? And that's before you even get into the pre-production planning, research & copyright-clearance time!

I’m really glad you made this video. As an animator, I animate every episode of my show all by myself and some people don’t realize how time consuming and incredibly hard it can be. Not to mention I have other projects on the side to do.
Maybe this video will open the eyes of people who haven’t gotten into making art or people that are demanding new animations!

This is spot on. Making an animation really takes a lot of time, even more so for newbs like me. A decent 40 second animation feels like a hundred hours to make. But still it is fun and you learn more along the way.
Real Odd1sOut ogs will understand how big of a deal the beard is. Pure character development, I say. There was once a time when James said he couldn't get a singular strand of hair anywhere on his head except his hair, but look at my boy now!

The part about backgrounds is way too true! I'm not large enough to hire people to draw them and so I have to spend hours on end drawing backgrounds that only appear for like 3 sec of my 14 sec shorts 😭

Fun fact: Disney recycled a lot of animations in their films, sometimes was evident and sometime not but the motive was have always a good quality for Disney standard even when they had problems with money. I remember since I was little, when watching cartoons I always paid attention to the background. Sometimes I wasn't even concentrated on the plot because I was looking around at objects in the back.
Animators don’t have it easy, anime episodes are made by entire teams, not one person, James does the animation, his team colors and edits I think
When the background that took 7 hours to make was played for the extra 4 seconds, I actually paused it and just appreciated all the detail. It’s incredible all of the detail that goes missed by the viewers, us, that the brilliantly talented artists make

This is why I have so much respect for this community. As someone who's getting back into regular artwork, I cannot judge another person's art too much, because I know it still probably took them hours or even days to get that one piece done. These are things that cannot be ignored.

backgrounds are something we did for our homeschool plays, they were very time consuming and not even the most difficult things (except we had a mountain view with a waterfall and a path leading all the way around...... that one was long), backgrounds are so underappreciated
