  • I love cook kits, and especially unique cook kits. I've always loved the simplicity of the trangia mess tins, and that is what this kit reminded me of. Today we will not only take a look at this awesome kit, but also cook up some breakfast burritos!

You really sung the praises of this little kit. Better than Trangia? No way, no how! I won’t be buying it. At that price, it’s a crazy buy! There’s far better out there, better priced too. Good luck with flogging this one, dead horses come to mind. Thank you for the vid.

Ernie -- I really like that Esbit 1100mL Cook Kit, Thank You for showing it to us. For those that want to use that stove as a wood -burner, I would suggest perforating that bottom plate with one eighth inch holes (everywhere except where the fuel tablets go). Next, go to your local Hardware Store and purchase four Metal, Drawer Pulls about the same size as those plastic feet and eliminate the plastic feet (don't forget to use the Lock Washers under the Drawer Pulls to keep them from vibrating loose).

    👍 A variation on a Theme.
Military 'Dixie' Mess Tins have served me well since 1968.
That rectangular shape packs well and can store auxiliary kit inside quite efficiently. One shouldn't knock it until they have tried it.
No criticism of this new cook kit, but it is not up for consideration as my current Dixie Set with Esbit Folding Burner using Gel Fuel does the job .. and is paid for.
A good share, thanks. Another option for those looking for something in this vein.
    Take care ..

As for the longevity of the Esbit tablets, I have some I bought 35 years ago for my little pocket sized Esbit stove. I pulled them out a few months ago and heated up some water for coffee on it using two little tabs. Lit right up and heated my stainless steel cup of water to boiling - just like they did in the old days! I doubt I could find them for .75 cents a box, anymore.

Having used nesting mess tins recently, I like the look & idea of this. Storing kit & food in it is why I like the nesting mess kits. Another alcohol stove that may be good with is Vargo's Decagon stove. I remember you didn't like it but could be good with this Esbit 1100ml cook set. Great video & thoughts. Thanks for sharing 👍

Thanks Dr. Ernie for your review. I have this stove and love it. Because of its larger surface area on the bottom it is very efficient with the Esbit Tabs and does not waste the heat from a flame pattern that is larger than the pots base.. Also I've found that the Kojin by Trail Designs works very well in this cook kit and is certainly more cost effective than using the Esbit Tabs. It is a very stable kit and is not tippy at all. I have not used wood in it yet. I highly recommend this kit and found it expensive, but also worth the money.

I think it would be great as a self contained kit to keep in the trunk of the car. A kit the size of a milk crate could hold freeze dried meals, water, a tarp, emergency blanket ect. ect... You just never know and a kit that could be built for around $100 is cheap peace of mind. 😎

That stove screams for soups and stews. Love the Kojin stove idea. 2 or 3 backpackers could team up and create some great grub if they each had one. Great basecamp kit as well with several units: soup/stew in one, rice or other starch in another and hot water in one for cleanup or coffee. You could probably use it as an oven with a proper sized trivet for baking. This stove is versatile!

  • @morris4069
    @morris4069 Před 2 lety +1

I have the round esbit cookset, the pot is good quality thick aluminum. I don’t normally use the base and esbit but use the Evernew titanium alcohol stove. This makes a great set with options. Get the pot stand for the Evernew or similar stove so you can heat with high heat or you can simply set the pot directly on the Evernew stove for low heat. Heat water fast or simmer a can of beans, chili without burning it or my favorite thing is making a perfect 1/2c of Basmati rice without fail. Because the flame pattern heats the radius of the pot when setting directly on the stove, it cooks like a crockpot, heating the side edge instead of a hotspot in the middle.
Used this setup for years at work along with several other sets but this one is what I’d keep in a bag for daily outings, a wood burning setup that packs flat makes a good companion for complete flexibility.

I did notice I had to use a windscreen but we’re always windy here. I don’t think I would use wood. Not much headspace, so much better stove alternatives for that out there. I was attracted to it’s unique shape, will do double duty as fry pan and pot. Seems very well made like most esbit offerings

Try the mk2 crusader. I got one to try with my trangia and it works well with that and with esbit fuel and with gel. It also works with an American GI mug.

A small silicone food scraper would come in handy for cleaning out that pan so you could get the next dish cooking.
Wondering about this ... I've cut a ring from a small tomato paste can that I place around the 14g Esbit cube to tame the heat and extend the burn for baking. It's very effective. Perhaps the rectangular-shaped Spam can could be cut for the same effect with those 27g tablets. I would have wanted to wrap those two burritos you made and toasted them over lower heat in the Esbit pan.

Not that I would reach for the esbit tabs first, but say my butane burner is damaged, and my butane/propane canister is empty and my alcohol bottle was accidentally left open, all my charcoal is wet and there's no trees anywhere anymore yeah, it's a good backup backup backup backup backup fuel 😂

@@toastiesburned9929 Same it's actually my 4th line of options if there is no power at home. 1st line: butane stove with 12 canisters; 2nd line: Trangia with 5l meths (denatured alcohol); 3rd line FireDragon Gel which I can use in my Lixada stove; 4th line traditional Esbit stove & tablets although I could burn them in my Lixada stove too.
If there is still no power after I've used all that up - about 6 to 8 weeks - it would be safe to go out and collect wood, and burn it at home, as most people would be dead.

Wouldn't a wood fire melt the aluminum, or, at least, warp it? I doubt that the finish will stand up to the btu output of a nice, hot wood fire.
A wood fire requires a lot of oxygen, as well. My best wood stoves require much more oxygen to burn damp wood (which is what is found along the coastal areas) than pre-cut, kin dried commercial lumber, which is often used in CZcams backyard video "tests". Picking up dried wood along the trail for a tiny backpacking wood stove for use in camp is just shy of a myth. I tried it for a month long hike on the AT last spring (and my start date in late April gave me lots of dry weather). I had to park myself right by my Firebox Ti Nano and tend it constantly to bring 2 cups of water to a boil in 10-15 minutes, with the hot ashes falling out of the holes in the bottom, allowing the sticks to go out. I had to fashion an ash pan from a tuna can lid to minimize this, but it limited air flow, cooling the fire and creating impressive amount of smoke. A larger stove would work better, but be heavier and more bulky.
    Nothing is without challenges 😁.

    • @OnTheRiver66
      @OnTheRiver66 Před 2 lety

Aluminum melts at 1200 F, and a wood fire gets a lot hotter than that. I’ve seen glass get soft in a campfire and that takes around 2000 F. I think a charcoal briquette could be used but a hot wood fire could melt the stove. The pan above filled with water might protect the fire box by keeping it cooler but I wouldn’t risk using wood.

I own this kit and I wouldn’t use it for emergency: obviously it does fine in a table top situation, but in actual field use, the design of this kit leaves it extremely vulnerable to wind. Boil times in actual field conditions can be stretched to even 20 minutes for a full pot, which means more than one of those fuel tabs. That means the added bulk and weight of a windscreen is essential. The rectangular shape also makes it difficult to pour from when your pot is full-water initially doesn’t want to pour in a nice stream from the corner of the pot, instead running down the outside over that Esbit residue into your cup. It’s a decent water boiler if you protect it from the wind, and you can cook in it, but in the field, the lip that nestles into the pot support also can trap food, complicating clean-up.

It reminds me of Dave Canterberry's fire kit that he made from a military surplus French mess kit and he carries in a Hilicon tex E&E pouch along with a Silky Pocketboy saw and a Trecker SAK. Here is a link to that video. czcams.com/video/y2HNDFOHv5k/video.html. It might be easier and cheaper to get one of these esbit kits than it is to track down a French mess kit!!

The manufacturer failed to utilise the lid as a frying pan by making it flat, that severely limits the practicality compared to the Trangia Mess Tins.

Cool kit. The price is reasonable to me.
I liked seeing actual cooking other than just boiling water. Makes for a good demo.

Solid fuel is noxious and is dangerous to use indoors

I think I'd use alcohol in a dish or gel alcohol. Not a fan of the Esbit smell.

Perhaps if this was made from titanium or even stainless steel it would be worth the price or even if it came with an alcohol burner, but as it is it's just not worth the price

Cost of fuel alone turns me off. Also hate Kidney, rectangular and square pans. Thats Just me though.

The one major drawback that I can see is that it’s not set up for making coffee.

Too bad the rest of the world has to deal with US or imperial measurement because you are only one of only three four countries who are not using metric. I notice very few of you translate for us.😢
