Great show i brought my mess kit home along with my canteens from the Marine Corps back in 1987-1991. I still use it camping hiking hunting and fishing in my boat.

I discovered those when I moved to France. Cheap at 4€ in my local Surplus store. !!!!
I have two now and keep one in the car with a Trangia burner and some delicious tinned French meals. Clean up like new. Bombproof.

Got one. Really like it. Great design. Better than the British Dutch or Australian design. Don't know why the French got rid of it.

The square design is perfect for cooking SPAM.

A Dutch guy suggested a really good one. The large Stainless steel Dutch mess tin, the Stainless is better for frying and the smaller aluminium tin from either the Dutch or British aluminium sets as they're better to boil in. Cuts back the weight and you get maximum use. I have both French sets but like you said they went from everywhere cheap to nowhere expensive pretty quickly so they can stay where they are while I batter my cheap kits.

I have the Dutch mess tins, I normally just take one with me, for actual frying/cooking and for boiling I use the Dutch canteen cup, same as the GI cup but a bit sturdier, stainless steel too, with a Pathfinder lid.

Maybe you also like the Dutch army mess tins. Same rectangular shape but with wire handles. The handles never get hot. Even when you fill them up with oil for deep frying, you can still touch the handles with bare hands.

They are making a stainless steel replica of this one. I have seen one in my dump store.

Nice video BUT a permanent marker is not a size reference :-)

      That is factually inaccurate.

@@ChrisSmith-xw7wv Permanent markers are all different sizes, so unless we know the size of it......my statement is factually correct ;:-) If only there was some sort of device with measuring units on it.............oh wait............

Not even close to the best military mess kit. No bale for hanging over fire. No stove included. No windscreen/wood stove included. Aluminum not stainless steel. Minimum sized pot for boiling.
