Krautrock is a broad, catchall genre that encompasses the many permutations of experimental rock music created by German bands in the ’70s. But one of krautrock’s greatest ironies is that the lead singer for one of the genre’s leading bands was born in Japan.
Damo Suzuki discussed his philosophy on what he calls “instant composing,” the importance of spirituality in making music and his Never Ending Tour in his RBMA Berlin 2018 lecture.

    __________________________
Vocalist and musician Damo Suzuki left home in his late teens and began busking around Europe. During one streetside performances, he attracted the attention of Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit, the bassist and drummer for the band Can. Suzuki became the lead vocalist for Can from 1970 to 1973, writing and singing on the band’s most enduring albums, including Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, and Future Days.
Praised for their fusion of psychedelic rock, funk, and avant-garde noise, as well as Suzuki’s freeform, multilingual, and often improvisational lyrics, these albums went on to influence members of bands like the Sex Pistols, Jesus & Mary Chain and Radiohead. Though Suzuki stopped making music altogether for several years, he returned in 1983 to front Damo Suzuki’s Network, under which he travels the world to improvise and record with local bands. His 2018 album with German experimental band Jelly Planet explores the limits of krautrock while affirming his status as a genre legend.

RIP Damo. Thanks for taking a chance on a kid like me back in the day. Performing with you those two times, especially when I was so young, is an experience I will forever cherish. You and your music influenced my life in so many ways, you were one of the kindest, sweetest people I ever met and I'll miss you dearly.

met Damo in Thailand in about 2000 in a cozy bar with a diverse music collection. I had no idea of his fame/reputation. Just an unpretentious, quirky, friendly guy that I liked to hang out with and talk about life, adventure, art, etc.. Months later, he very generously sent me some of his CDs as a gift, which I enjoyed, something different for my already pretty eclectic collection. Lost touch with him after a few years as my life got complicated and absorbed more of my attention. Being free but (human)-connected, following his instincts and curiosity certainly seemed to me at the time to be central to his values. I think we both tried to steer clear of political discussions -- probably we both recognized it as laden with baggage and expectations too cumbersome for us to have more of a "free" communication.

@@Creaturefiendyo After doing some digging around, I'm thinking the reason is that Can was such a short part of his life, from 1970-1974, whereas he's been touring and making music from 1984 till now. So maybe he just wants people to talk more about the music he's making now.

Daniel Ellis may have a good point, though.
Personally I think it may also involve some interpersonal band politics or relationship issue that none of us know about because he seems slightly TOO vehement about not discussing it, as if something went on behind closed doors involving just him and other Can members.

I sometimes have songs okay in my head, or when I have a guitar or keyboard I'll just play through something, and sometimes I feel like that wouldn't count in some way, but now I feel like recording and sharing that stuff is as valid as composing something overtime.

Damo Suzuki hasn’t changed at all from the time when we shared the stage three decades ago somewhere in Germany. He’s no idea what he’s talking about. His self expression is so poor not just because of his poor English but because of his poor presentation of himself. Ridiculous to say that he doesn’t want to share things from the past with younger people in the audience due to the age difference. He’s not representing or speaking of the Japanese musicians I know and worked with. Just a bla bla talker. He was so lucky to join CAN at that time cause he was such a Dilettant. In one thing I agree with him: yes, you were not a cool singer or musician in Can. His musical contribution wasn’t as great as some people believe. He reminds me of Yoko Ohno. Without John she couldn’t have performed or recorded with anybody. Damo, wake up and become an adult! I’m SADATO. Do you remember me?

And I know the Japanese, Japan (music) culture and language very well. 2. I made a name there as a professional musician and worked with many respected jazz, punk, rock, noise and world musicians who I have a lot of respect for. 3. Japan is my 3rd home country.
By saying so, I don't like when I hear from Japanese (musicians) outside of Japan representing themselves or their country in a way which is not true or authentic. If you don't agree with me, that's all right but I'm not schizophrenic. (Besides, I would love to be on a panel discussion with Damo and comment to his comments in person and in public.).
