Paul McCartney Raw Interview Footage with Roy Leonard (1984)

  • Here's raw footage of an interview by Roy Leonard with former Beatle Paul McCartney, excerpts from which aired on WGN Channel 9. The discussion was largely about his recently released movie, "Give My Regards to Broad Street."
    Includes:
Very short bars and tone (about 1030 Hz), followed by brief snow
Setting up, with explanation by Roy that this was for airing over WGN radio and TV and that other parts would air on a syndicated magazine-type show called Rocker with Paula Yates.
Paul though, is more interested in whether the (apparently) extremely hot camera lights could be brought down a bit, and when it appears unlikely, makes a joke and solicits laughter from the crew.
The discussion starts with a question on the street busking scene in "Give My Regards to Broad Street" and how almost no one recognized him
Next, Roy asks about Paul's efforts over the years to distance himself from his Beatle image and old bandmates (he considered the breakup like a "divorce") and his decision to include Beatles songs in the film. He also talks about re-recording Good Day Sunshine and how it reminded him of good times with John Lennon.
Roy and Paul discuss the influence of Busby Berkeley and Fred Astaire on some of his works and how his dad's tastes were ingrained in Paul
Roy asks about "Shout! The Beatles in Their Generation" bio by Philip Norman and Paul's past conversations with Mick Jagger, and Paul's relationship with his own children
    They also discuss:
    - Julian Lennon's recent single and the quality of his voice vs. John's
    - the Fab Four's opening for Little Richard and his impressions of the singer in some Beatles songs
    - how the movie is a bit of "a day in the mind of a rock star" and what "a day in the life of a rock star" is (fairly normal)
    - whether he'll write his own biography, the misconceptions about him and the Fabs, Peter Brown's book, and how Paul has "burned a couple"
    - the most frustrating thing about having to be Paul McCartney, and what he'd like to be most remembered for
    - Roy's last talk with him in 1976 when he was touring with Wings and when he'll tour again
Conversation is interrupted by someone interjecting - "Roy, we're going to have to tag this now because powers greater than myself are [something]..."
Roy gets to ask one more question though, namely why the songs for his film were chosen and whether they represent "the best" of McCartney, and finally whether Paul is worried about what the critics will say of the film
The cameraman "Tom" goes to a wide shot as Roy does his tags
After all is said and done, they get up from their chairs and disengage their mics while making small talk - Roy mentions how much he likes "For No One" and how one of Paul's daughters asked her daddy if it was "a new one"
Excerpts from this interview were aired on local Chicago TV (and syndication) around late-October 1984.
This was from a tape donated to The Museum of Classic Chicago Television as part of Peter Marino Collection.

Its not just that he's good looking, he's also attractive, y'know? -- he seems magnetic, he's beautiful man, but also on the inside, all the great lyrics, his humor, talent, all the charities he's involved in, the millions of people he's brought joy to, that's gotta make you feel good -- the world benefits from Paul McCartney, and that is a fact.

To me, all four Beatles are equally important for creating the total Beatles sound, but Paul wins the prize of creating melodies that we all remember, and also of keeping the legacy alive, with consideration of course for the sad fact that he and Ringo are the last two alive. Ringo does his bit in that regard as well, by the way, and the most beautiful thing is when he sometims still is a guest drummer with Paul's band, and proves why he and Paul are half of the best band that ever was.

His contributions in the 60's and all the albums he released after the break up of The Beatles are a big demonstration of his passion of the music and his great creativity for write songs and the way he "builds" the melodies for all the songs (join together all the instruments for sounds great and it creates this wonderful atmosphere). Love the cute Paul smile and head toss @3:22..He looks gorgeous!!😀💕💕💕A little stoned, but I’m smiling😄. And before you PIDer’s start commenting about 1966, this is not William/Billy Campbell, it’s not Phil Ackrill/Viv Shanshall/Beatle Ed or any other replacement you can dream up in order to fit your PID theory, although I will say that Billy/Faul looked good but in a cold way and could NEVER look as good or match the singing or the heartfelt, magnetic warmth of James Paul, that we can agree with!
And for the PIAer’s out there who dismiss that there ever was a 2nd Paul with little to no research, there’s mounting evidence that there are indeed two Pauls (and possibly some very minor ones, probably body doubles, many celebrities have them) as the difference between the two have been seen in their music videos, movies, interviews and photos for those who wish to scrutinize..I myself see 7 checkpoints on JPM’s face here that says it’s him, mannerisms too and yes, he may have had plastic surgery done, did he have injuries? The photos are the most confusing, since many of them have been retouched or outright tampered with. Very tricky.
So the burning question is, why the two Pauls? If PIAer’s and PIDer’s could talk about this in a calm, cool and collected manner, then maybe we could shed new light on this and perhaps a new conclusion(s) would be reached. Come Together and crack the case wide open!!☀️✨

The PID theory is somewhat intruiging, but in this interview Paul really looks like young Paul pre-66,same voice n'all, just more mature/ experienced, the music business is shady, the more money, the more power often equals corruption, but I still believe this is the real James Paul.(Of the 80's)

525Lines : Paul is the master of promotion. He knows that if it will help to promote an album, tour, book or movie, he will get out there and deal with the promotional tour. He has a naturally optimistic view of things and puts up with some of the displeadures in order to get his product out there.

So unbelievably beautiful! Sigh. Bewitched, bothered and bewildered. I’m afflicted, I’m addicted that I keep coming back to look at that face! Those eyes. I love the film - prophetic and ahead of its time. Just like Paul McCartney! Julian is a sound alike - sorry yes he’s got a good voice but simply he is not John. John Lennon was special. George and Paul are special. It is magic and it is genius. Being a genius is God given only. You’re not automatically talented just because you’re related to a Beatle. The Beatles are a unique creation that is more than the sum of its parts. So you don’t partake of the magic just because you’re the offspring of the fab four. We should be grateful that this giant walks among us right now! Instead of nick picking every track, why not enjoy the Good music! ❤❤❤❤
