    Perfect demo Glyn.

    Good demo. I see lots of comments about lower resistance being "warmer". The missing bit to the evaluation IMO is to also show the effect of the tone control. My theory is that the 1M "brighter" volume pot can sound a lot like a 500K or 250K if you roll off the tone a bit. Which seems to me like the 1M pot gives more sonic landscape to play with.

      I'm sure you could achieve that with a bit of experimenting with capacitor/tone pot values. Even just turning the volume control down to around 7 or 8 will do it. For such a simple little circuit there are so many variations and so many ways of using it.

    “I know it’s not a jazz master” 😂😂 gotta get out in front of those really dumb CZcams comments. 1:32
    I’m overhauling an old Epiphone semi-hollow and this was helpful, thank you.

    First time I've seen a demo with these different pots and basically all LP players need a 1 meg in the neck position for sure. Thanks.

      Hi Steve, it's all just a matter of taste. I should make the same video but with a Strat bridge pickup, the 1 meg would be pretty harsh with that. Jazzmaster pickups are designed for 1Meg.

    I tried 1M pots in my LP and liked what I heard. The deal breaker was the pot's taper. I went back to the 500k pots.

    Nice demo. To my ears, I prefer the 250k pots. They sounded a lot smoother to me but didn't muddy the high end.
    Question: Can you or would you even mix pot types? Say 250k for the volume and 500k for the tone?

    • @MrGlynsPickups
      @MrGlynsPickups  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Absolutely, do some experimenting. The tone cap value is worth playing with too. Then there's treble bleeds...

  • @surfonaut
    @surfonaut Před 9 měsíci +1

    Excellent video thanks for that.
    I've got 250K on my paranormal Jaguar and the tone muddys up quickly. I read somewhere that I should go to 1Megs [they are standard at that].
    I think I'll go straight to 1Meg & add a a 12 pole Varitone switch with a bypass on Zero so I get the best of all worlds. [hoping]

    Great demo! Thinking about putting 500k pots in my jazzmaster. The middle position with the 1meg pots is currently too harsh for me.

    Hey, great demo! Just checking something; were you switching out both the volume and tone pots or just the volume pot?

    • @MrGlynsPickups
      @MrGlynsPickups  Před 2 lety +3

      Hi, the tone pot was 500KOhm with a 0.22 cap the whole time. Always best just to change one thing eh.

    I thought Humbuckers required 500k pots. No?

    • @MrGlynsPickups
      @MrGlynsPickups  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Hi Dave, thanks for asking. It isn't a 'requirement', more of a convention.
      Most humbuckers are designed with 500k pots in mind but there's certainly no need to follow that.
      If your pickup is too bright then you could try a 250k or even 300k. Jazzmasters switch from 1Meg (1000k) on the lower circuit to 250k on the upper circuit. It just gives a different tone.

    Hi Glyn, thanks for this. Were all of the pots demoed at 10? Sorry if I'm being obtuse, just trying to get my head around this. Cheers.

    • @MrGlynsPickups
      @MrGlynsPickups  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah, everything at 10, I tried to play as consistently as I could, all settings the same.
      The difference between 250 and 500 is much more obvious the louder you get because you feel that difference in sensitivity.
      The way pickups and electronics 'feel' when you play isn't talked about much. It's that feedback loop between the attack of the note and your fingers.
      You know how it is when you change a set of pickups eh.

      @@MrGlynsPickups Yep. Thanks Glyn, this video had been enlightening. I've never had a variety of pots on hand to try this myself. Cheers.

    Is this not just because you are sending more signal to earth with a lower resistance pot? That is the difference between the pots. Less resistance to ground. If you lowered the gain on the amp to the same would you get the same effect?

    The higher you go the brighter , opposite applies . Caps are opposite of that principle
