- You Don't Need Water to Wash Your Car. In 2012 my husband, two sons, and I were taught how to wash a car without water. It is literally a waterless car wash secret and we want to share it with you while we wash our Black Ford F-350.
Waterless Car Wash Recipe:
32 oz Spray Bottle amzn.to/3vsh9Xp
1 Tbsp Baby Shampoo/Wash amzn.to/3vmlN9w
1/2 Cup Distilled Vinegar amzn.to/3ptkGUH
Water
Open the spray bottle and pour in 1 Tbsp of baby shampoo/wash and 1/2 cup of distilled vinegar. Top off to the 32-ounce line with water. Gently swirl to combine the ingredients.
Now that we have made the waterless car wash solution it is time to wash my dirty truck.

When and Where We Learned About the Waterless Car Wash Solution
The winter of 2013 we spent in California after a drought (when is there not a drought in California?). We had just made what we call a hard and fast trip from WA to CA. Our travels south had been delayed in Washington by business and we wanted to get south before the big snow hit. We drove from Central Washington to Southern California in a day and a half with 1 truck and 1 SUV towing 2 trailers. When we arrived in Southern California our Pickup, SUV, and two trailers were filthy dirty.
After we spent a day getting everything sorted and set up it was time to get the vehicles cleaned up. Rhett (my husband) pulled out a hose, a bucket, and a bottle of dawn dish soap. He had the hose hooked up, the dawn in the bottom of his bucket, and was filling the bucket with water when a very nice older gentleman walked up with a spray bottle, some baby wash, and a jug of vinegar.
"Young man, let me teach you something," he kindly said.
Rhett turned off the water and gave our RV neighbor his full attention as he taught him what I want to teach you; the recipe for a homemade waterless car wash. Then I'm going to teach you some tricks and techniques for using it to wash your vehicles.

Great tips. Thank you for sharing... thus is great for use in areas where there is a drought or water restrictions. We go through this occasionally when we cabt even water our lawn. So this technique is perfect to use all of the time.

Whaterless washes are also used as a lubricant for the clay bar that you use to clean dirt and particles from the paint.
Love the video and the tips. I would want to add a portion of some sort of liquid wax/fabric softener, but otherwise, it sure looks promising. I don't like to pull out the hose for washing my car or taking it to car wash often. Hence, I searched for DIY waterless. Tada. Love it.
Thank you for the tutorial. This is what I was looking for. I would further appreciate receiving the answers to my following questions:
- For how long have you been cleaning the truck like this? Have you noticed any negatives such as the clear coat getting worn off here and there, or scratches?
- Do you "contact wash" it once in a while or do you think one could pull it off by cleaning one panel a day, daily? I work full time and also push through my PhD thesis so I have very little time for car maintenance.
- Do you wax the truck once in a while? Any recommendations on what to use for that as well? I want to maintain the paint but I am worried about using products with harmful chemicals.

After you spray, wipe it in a straight direction- no circles! Do a few wipes if it's not too dirty, then flip the cloth or use a clean side for the next wipe or section.

How y’all effectively clean the microfiber clothes? Like anything, believe you target the stain wished to remove- so if it’s grease- degreaser … then use the same color per function like blue towels for glass only, yellow for body only, grey for etc- and wash them all separately… but! What chemical combo do y’all use per and what manner do you use to clean them? Like 5gal bucket with drill/auger, old clothes washing machine? Hand wash? Thanks!

thank you nicely elaborated and demoed,appreciate the hard work. also since you transitioned from full water wash to waterless, which is the less time consuming one?i generally end up doing weekly /fortnighly water wash if the mud marks are too much.
If it is a heavy soiling we do use water but otherwise we have found it is just as fast if not faster to do the waterless.

@Rick Robinette, thanks for your video love. So, when it comes to this beast of a truck I will give you the rundown of how "she's" (my husband swears she's a girl) been cared for. After the long hard muddy, salty, dirty winters we take her down to a local car wash where we do one massive spray down and clean off all the winter junk. Make sure you spray that undercarriage. During this wash we use that pink spray on wax (if you can actually call that stuff wax). The only other time we use the local manual car wash is after we are out in the fields working or playing in the mud. We never use automatic car/truck washes because the dually doesn't fit and we don't like those things beating our vehicle to death. Other than that, this truck only gets hand-washed using this solution. We wash our truck about 2 times per month from spring through fall. No wax! We do occasionally use a tire spray when the summer sun is high and hot to help the tires from cracking and provides some longevity. I hope this helps, Emmaline
Have 2 park under a tree. Gets sap daily. So I do this same method with microfiber, and it really helps! I had to start with a really good automatic car wash first, but this way I don't have to go there nearly as often.

I've tested many kinds of baby washes and shampoos, including the ones mention in the video, and they all make a LOT of foam, so you need to use the vinegar. You can even add a little liquid wax, but you will need to determine how much for your needs, so it will spray easily.
The vinegar lowers the pH, and decreases the amount of foaming from the baby wash.

pH can change things in this situation.
The vinegart lowers the pH, so you don't get too much suds, and the soap still works.
Are you allowed to use a pressure washer? Best to remove any abrasive grit first, especially around wheel hubs. Also I believe the commercial formulas use a lubricant like silicone oil emulsion to minimise scratching. Hair conditioner or fabric softener may work.
We’ve never done the pressure washer. During a drought it would have used too much water. Your ideas are intriguing. We’ll have to look into it.
Center pivot irrigation in the background using tens of thousands of gallons per day. I'm thankful to live where there is ample water. Is that E. WA State?
Yes, Eastern Washington. Without irrigation made available because of the dams and irrigation systems we would not have ample water for farming and life.

Is this a carwash instead of a bucket of soap water and a hose down? Or as more or a afterwash wax? application applied to a cleaned paint surface? Love idea of not using water to wash as on rain water.. but worried about scratch/ buff marks rubbing dirt into the paint job?..
It is an actual washing. It doesn't seem to have caused any problem with the paint.
I like keeping my mustang clean. This will save me from having to drag out the hose or paying 15 bucks for a single bottle of that waterless spray.
I am so glad it is useful for you. This has been our go-to car wash solution for a very long time.
The vinegar keeps the solution from making a lot of suds when you spray.
Use DISTILLED WATER to make the solution. You don't want to be adding dirt to the wash solution.

We have cleaning vinegar which is stronger than regular vinegar. Which one is suitable for this ?
A cleaning vinegar will work fine for this. We just used regular distilled vinegar. I would not use apple cider vinegar.

I'm not sure. This solution has worked so well I'm hesitant to adjust it. If you try it let us know how it goes.

I would be way too scared to leave tons of swirl marks with this method. Good for quick and easy results, but probably not good if you want to keep your vehicule away from swirl marks, especially on a black paint!
Does it smell like vinegar when done?
Vinegar is amazing to add to a cleaning solution. It does smell a little like vinegar initially but the smell dissapates quickly.
Ahhh.. while I think the home made car wash mixture and method is great, A good rinse down with the pressure washer before the spray/scrub/wipe down would be best. Going straight in with spraying and wiping/scrubbing without a good rinse down is going to cause a ton of micro scratches to your paint. I know the microfiber picks up a ton of the dirt etc, but that dirt is still on the towel you’re using to wipe your vehicle down.
Basically, it’s like very fine grit sand paper to your paint.. it’s SO important to rinse your car before washing.
Also- pressure washer’s are considered eco-friendly. Due to the high pressure and controlled nozzle, you don’t use anymore water than you need, leading to substantially less water waste.

Green algae.....hmmm...If you try it we would love to hear about the results. I imagine more water would be needed in your case just to wash away the bits of algae you dislodge. :)
i was going to warn against pouring an acid on your new truck paint, but then i saw it was a FORD...
Maybe you should look into fortified shampoo for fast hair growth.

That truck was filthy. As a DIY detailer, I really can't recommend this method, but it seems to work for them. Waterless wash should only be used to wipe off a thin layer of dust, finger prints, light dirt. Perfect use would be for someone whose vehicle is in a car show and they want to give it a quick cleaning. First, I would have used an all purpose cleaner on the grill, lower panels, and the tailgate. Let this dwell and then rinsed it off (preferably with a pressure waster). Then I would have foamed the vehicle in preparation for a traditional contact wash. Improper wash and drying techniques are the most common cause of scratches and swirls in a vehicles clear coat. I suspect that this truck's paint is filled with marring and scratches. But, as I said, it works for them!
There is no way that is not Dan Aykroyd....
Skip the vinegar. The acidity will ruin your clear coat. 10% baby shampoo is enough. I should add that the ph is still too low for car wash

Watch what Dish washing detergent you use. Dawn & most other detergents are DEGREASERS & could ruin your paint on your vehicle. I ruined the paint on a car of mine YEARS ago when I was a teenage.
Good to know. We've had great success with the baby shampoo and baby wash.
Professional detailers often use dish soap to strip waxes and sealants off of a paint to prepare it for polishing and applying new coatings. Avoid dish washing detergent for washing your vehicle.
Why baby wash?
Because it is a mild soap.
Why not dawn dish soap?
I have found that any of the dish soaps make this solution too sudsy and doesn't allow the vinegar to create such a streak free shine. Baby wash truly gives the best finish.
Dish soaps are used by professional detailers to strip off waxes and sealants from vehicle paint. Dish washing liquids should not be used to routinely wash your vehicle.
I'll stay with the car wash!

Ok, first of all... you can't call this Waterless Car Wash if your recipe has water in it. And second, vinegar can speed up the rust growth! It's acidic enough for iron in metals like steel to react. It also can dissolve aluminum, which the F-350's body is made of. It won't be serious for the first time but if you wash it often over time, you will see some damages. You guys need proper education before you can pass down your "methods" to others.

All waterless washes (even commercial ones) contain at least some water.They washed an entire 1 ton truck with a 1/2 gallon of liquid. This is not a method I would choose on my vehicle, but there's no reason to be a jerk. This process works for them and they wanted to pass it along.
