I’ve been told by Steve Evans of Ronin Graphics decals 🇦🇺 that a drop of dishwashing liquid in the water greatly aids sliding them around. He screen-prints his sheets as well.
All in all the plane turned out nice. I haven’t used their 1/24th scale decals before but have used several of their 48 scale decals without much issues. But you are correct, the insignias are a little thick. I didn’t use the micro set and sol, I used the tamiya mark set. Didn’t do any damage.
Interesting update Brett! You shouldn't have too, but would fine sanding the decals be of any help? And p.s. you probably put the decals on better than the ground crew ever painted them, they could be quite workmen like with painting!

Decals look great if the carrier film ends at the decal print.😊
