I doubt I will ever have even an opportunity to try a rattlesnake, yet here I am, simply cause I enjoy listening to this lovely man.
I ran across one while camping/fishing here in central Oregona couple dozen years ago. I dispatched him, cleaned him and tossed him in the cooler. _(If I'd tried one before, I probably would have let the snake be, but I wanted to at least try fried rattle snake, so I harvested him)_
I fried him up and he was damned good!

Thanks for the fun cook out! Had a rattler in my large rabbit hutch and well he is soaking in some milk. That’s what got me here, I’ve ate a ton of different snakes growing up while playing “survival” with my cousins and siblings. Needless to say we winged everything we cooked because I didn’t grow up with a daddy or anyone to teach me anything aside from my one cousin that was “the best” in my eyes. So I do my best to include my kiddos in everything that happens and today we found a rattler in the hutch and now going to eat it and tan/stretch the skin. So thanks for this and God bless you brother, I’m glad I found your page!
G’day Kent

I've ringed the dingy-dong bell a long time ago. I regret nothing.
I've had my "dingy-dong bell" rung many times in my life, mostly by family; my brother and 7 sisters. I've been kicked, punched, bit, stabbed, shot, run over by a car, dropped out a 2nd story window, taken a chisel to the forehead, a baseball bat to the back of the head, poisoned, and drowned. I am thankful, however, as I've never been successfully set on fire (and not for the lack of trying).

Hi Kent. Stumbled upon your channel yesterday. Great content and already taught me a lot about your life and Old West culture. All the best from the UK.
Thanks Kent and Shannon! Just over the weekend I stumbled across a good ole fat 36” coon tail rattler in Southern Az! A little too close to camp for me, so he was sent to the great beyond. @@Dr-wheel-barrow-opperator I dunno about that. I had a collie that killed and ate every copperhead she could find. Never once did I see her go after a black snake or a water snake. 36-40” was the common size for copperheads where I grew up, largest one I ever saw in the wild was 48”. And that was measured not guessed. Caught and released a long way from my collie and anyone else. There in Texas they have some different copperheads, I think they are called either trans pecos, or pecos copperheads. They are different from a northern or southern copperhead. Anyway I’m getting off track here, but it seems most dogs have sense enough to steer clear of the snakes. Could have been that my dog smelled them on my clothes occasionally as I had my own venom extraction lab at the time. Maybe that’s what my dog thought I was eating every day 😂😂😂

Did this with a green Mojave rattle snake. Ran outta rabbit meat so I looked this up and made it. It was great! Made a hat band for my buddy in Oklahoma. Great job man.

Growing up in southern California we used to run into rattlesnakes all the time. One time my Boy Scout troop was backpacking and this rattlesnake made the mistake of coming into our camp. One of my friends was a pro at throwing rocks and he smashed the snakes head in short order. After skinning it for one of my friends to use as a hat band, we decided to eat the snake. We cut it up into small pieces and cooked it in some butter we had. It was actually pretty good. None of us kill rattlesnakes these days because we believe they deserve to live and they are good for the environment. If I was in a survival situation I'd happily eat one.
For "chewy" meats like snake, rabbit ETC try soaking them in Pineapple juice for about 6 hours after the milk bath, it's a natural tenderizer. I BBQ'd up a prairie rattler I stumbled upon a few years back, a "dinner/hat band combo!"
For tanning the rattler hide I salt it for a couple days, then soak it in a 50/50 mix of glycerin and rubbing alcohol for about a week in a canning jar. The glycerin keeps the hide soft and supple so it doesn't crack and lasts a lot longer.
Cleaning the snake did not bother me but. Seeing Ken with out a hat was more scary. Love the videos please keep going.
Thanks Rick for watching

Family story! My Mom, as a little “tad”, insisted her older brothers include her in the snake cleaning operation. They finally allowed her to hold the tail end while they pulled the skin off (like a sock). They got the snakeskin hatband, and Mom got a sudden handful of snake poop. Great hilarity telling that one to my generation of kids.
