Where hybrids really shine is in stop and go rush hour traffic. A neighbor had a 2006 Toyota Highlander Limited with the V6 and I have a 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited with the same V6. Back when we both were driving them daily (I still am) we compared our fuel economy numerous times. On the highway he got about 22mpg and hybrid version gets about 25mpg. It is better, but not that much. In rush hour stop and go traffic though, the difference is incredible; and the worse the traffic is, the bigger the difference. In reality bad rush hour traffic his V6 version often got as little as 10mpg according to his trip computer (confirmed using the gas pump). On those same days my hybrid would get as much as 47mpg (US gallons too). The worse the traffic and the slower the drive is, the more time my hybrid will spend with the engine off and the more time using the electric motors.

It's fascinating to me that while the hardware of luxury vehicles will always be ahead of what's in more affordable cars, the software of mid-level car companies has far-surpassed luxury brands.
It's not an important feature for luxury cars If you're rich and want luxury that's more of a feature, especially if you're chauffeured around so then the driving software is way less important to you and your chauffeur will just need to deal with it
Super interesting, isn't it? It actually makes sense. Great software is expensive to develop, but free per unit. So it lends itself to large companies (lots of engineers) who produce at high volume, and then it's virtually free for them to use this software in as many of their cars as possible, even the cheap ones. on the other side, Bentley doesn't have the resources to hire a lot of engineers to develop customized navigation software (for example) for the few thousand cars they make per year, so they either have to use/buy lots of tech from high-volume companies or put out half-baked software. High volume manufacturing is a wonderful thing.
W12 variant of Bentley Flying Spur can hit 207MPH. And that's stock, with a tune & bolts on, that thing would be insanely fast and quick!! Definitely a Model S Plaid version for the Internal combustion engine cars. Impressive!!
Not sure an EV version would sell as well; most people with this level of money value convenience, and EV's are not that. I'm sure they will make one eventually, but with the Lucid, EQS, i7, etc., the luxury EV's for people with lots of money market seems pretty saturated already.
Ive always thought big luxury cars like these, a rolls royce, a maybach etc. Make way more sense than an oversized hatchback SUV thing. These buyers domt care about extra EV costs, they dont have to worry about range or charging - they have drivers to manage these things - and more than anything the silence is a huge selling point, Rolls have been renowned for their total quiet for decades. Never figured out why its taken them so long, especially when Bentley is able to raid the VW group kit from the Taycan and such.
The S class and luxury cars like it are used by many governments around the world. These cars need to be ready at any time, and in Pakistan at least, still no sign of ev in the government, or a Range Rover for that matter. Time is far more important for company execs and government officials than some insulation.
Limo companies don’t currently have the infrastructure, nor the time to waste while charging. Some will buy these to save on fuel costs, but it’ll be many years until limos are fully electric.
Millage depreciation is a huge deal in limo services / luxury rentals. Charging time would be a non issue with 300mi / 500km of range. Especially with the smooth driving they do.

I like this being a hybrid actually. Nothing would damper the luxury experience harder than having to charge but being unable to, or being stuck at a slow one for a long time, or having an issue with your battery that can't be fixed because batteries can't be repair or are hard to find. Its not just about affordability, mass EV adoption still isn't possible right now, and its good to have PHEV options for a few more years.

Had a neighbor pro hockey player whose wife drove around young kids in one of these. I would end up behind her a few times and I swore I saw kids throwing cheerios at each other in the back seat. 😅
I’m guessing that they don’t make it electric because it would need a super massive battery. 20 miles from an 18kWh battery is absurd… You would need a 270kWh battery to have a 300 mile range on that car. That’s almost 3 Model S or 4 Model 3 long range worth of batteries.
@@BennnWJK to replace them completely, sure… But most of the vehicles on the road could be perfectly replaced by current tech EVs. And for most people it would even be a better user experience. Also, I’m pretty sure there’s something very wrong with this particular car in the electric drivetrain. 1.1 mile per kWh is absurdly low. Even the Rivian R1T (with much worse aerodynamics and weight) does over 2 miles per kWh… And Hummer EV, which the least efficient EV on the market, is still 50% more efficient than the Bentley 🤔

Bentleys may actually eventually switch to being full electric for sound and luxury reasons but I don't think the tech is there yet. The downsides of an electric vehicle is a huge risk for a coach design car company. Failing parts? It's probably not owned long enough for them to wear out. Charge time? Availability of Compatible Quick chargers? That seems like a risk when reputation and prestige is all that keeps people buying these things. Volkswagen Group will get there but I'm betting the coach built stuff will be the very last.
Too many buttons indeed, but I do prefer physical buttons for super obvious things you always use, like climate control. I do see tons of stuff that will be broken in 10 years and will cost a year's salary to fix. :)
Honestly, I think the real solution in the future will be similar set ups like the karma revero GT. Cars will have an EV drivetrain and a battery but have a small engine that acts as a generator/range extender. Ik Mazda is exploring this type of solution with a small rotary engine/motor. This enables the manufacturer to use a smaller battery, making the whole process much more scalable and sustainable because they’ll be able to use less lithium/battery material (ie. the part of an EV that’s the most expensive) per unit/car. Gas tank sizes will be like 5-10 gallons. Just think ab it….

I'm sure an EV Bentley, Rolls, or Maybach would make an awesome short distance daily driver (just like they do for us plebeians), but I don't believe they would be very good for those fast, long distance cruises.
I notice Bentley has stated that by 2030 they will have an all electric line. I'm sure in a few years from now charging will be fast enough for high speed traveling Bentley EVs to make sense, but IMO not yet...
I don’t think any rich person would travel 500 miles by car.
@@Carrot-is-a-fruit because wealthy people don't think like you (or me). They often have lots of nice things that they barely use-- expensive cars are no exception.

Here in Britain you may not fit in some parking with that Cadillac Escalade, you will heavily depend on people parking correctly within their lines.

It's not that deep.
I mean to get anything more luxurious you need a Phantom, really, and the price tag on those is even higher. Not that most of these go for $300k, this one is actually pretty base level (minus the sport model and the black package), I'd factor in $50k+ in options easy
LOL Model X is way better for the price
Yeah it really deserves to be $300k when Toyota makes cars with better tolerances at $20k. Cuz that's how that works.
Does good luxury even exist anymore if the entire point of luxury is to have a piece of mind? Just like what CrimsonWolf said, if a much less expensive commuter car provides a better piece of mind (reliability) than a much more expensive car, then good luxury is basically dead.

I am one of many Bentley drivers/ Buyers who watch your channel.
If this car were 100% Electric I would be online configuring my order while continuing to watch the rest of this video.
As you know, given Rimacs somewhat recent acquisition of Bugatti and Porsche stake in ownership, we know that the entire VW brand (from Bugatti, Lamborghini, Bentley, Porsche, Audi to VW) all will benefit from Rimacs Electrification.
Also, given Rolls Royce announcement to go all electric, Bentley is now under huge pressure to keep people like myself from switching over to the dark side in search for an all electric nice car. By the way, I drive a Bentley and this is one of the only channels I love watching. Keep up the great Job, you are creating a legacy for many that will come after you. Cant wait for your video of the fully Electric version of this car hopefully next year model.
I totally agree that all that plastic getting greasy would be annoying but people who can afford that car can afford a cleaning every week. They probably only need a monthly cleaning since they go into the company office once or twice a month.
you can option that to be metal or carbon fiber i think
You can select an interior trim that's non plasticy and more metallic. This is just the standard interior trim.
No it’s still annoying trust me!
This is the base trim, the higher spec is miles better (somehow). The matte finish on the open pore wood holds up way better, but most owners are in the back or they'd have a Continental (or both, I know a guy with a Bentayga custom fitted with a Urus interior by the factory, money ain't an issue for this market)
It's not plastic and definitely a much better material quality lol!!!!

Hey Marques, you should make a video about what the best EV would be. And take your favorite parts from different cars and talk about what combo would make your favorite EV!

How about talking how far you would get with a caravan & family who take regular weekend breaks. I could drive from the UK to Germany do a lap of the Nurbergring & come back again all on one tank of diesel and within 24 hours. Do that with an affordable EV & I'm all ears.

I had a friend that barely used the combustion engine to the point that he got a message saying the diesel was about to expire..... yes Expire!! He lives in Central London
13:05 Bro, in the 90’s we used a folding map.
why dont you film and do the driving part segment? That's like, the most interesting part.
It's kind of getting a bit jarring since has them for a week and has a production team, but won't show a drive or play a song.
Because he only looks at the tech of the cars. He has a clear lack of automotive knowledge so what would he explain about handling characteristics and day to day living with the car during a driving segment. You’re better off watching Doug DeMuro, Straight Pipes, Savagegeese, etc. It’s the same thing with the car reviews that Linus puts out. They don’t know cars outside of the tech that goes in them.

@@rihards12344321 of course it makes sense. Look at the number of views this has compared to Jay Leno’s most recent video and Jay is a genuine car enthusiast. You can tell Jay loves cars by the way he speaks about it. MKBHD just sounds like he read the bullet points that the vehicle manufacturer rep gave him. It's fascinating to me that while the hardware of luxury vehicles will always be ahead of what's in more affordable cars, the software of mid-level car companies has far-surpassed luxury brands.
It's not an important feature for luxury cars
If you're rich and want luxury that's more of a feature, especially if you're chauffeured around so then the driving software is way less important to you and your chauffeur will just need to deal with it
Super interesting, isn't it? It actually makes sense. Great software is expensive to develop, but free per unit. So it lends itself to large companies (lots of engineers) who produce at high volume, and then it's virtually free for them to use this software in as many of their cars as possible, even the cheap ones. on the other side, Bentley doesn't have the resources to hire a lot of engineers to develop customized navigation software (for example) for the few thousand cars they make per year, so they either have to use/buy lots of tech from high-volume companies or put out half-baked software. High volume manufacturing is a wonderful thing.
I was just going to buy this. Thanks for the review 🤪

“Much rather have cupholders and things in the center than another person.”

I love this channel because it shows me all these cars I can never afford lol
Limo companies don’t currently have the infrastructure, nor the time to waste while charging. Some will buy these to save on fuel costs, but it’ll be many years until limos are fully electric.
Millage depreciation is a huge deal in limo services / luxury rentals. Charging time would be a non issue with 300mi / 500km of range. Especially with the smooth driving they do.

A tech review reviewing a car that's being discontinued? What's wrong with that picture?
I like this being a hybrid actually. Nothing would damper the luxury experience harder than having to charge but being unable to, or being stuck at a slow one for a long time, or having an issue with your battery that can't be fixed because batteries can't be repair or are hard to find. Its not just about affordability, mass EV adoption still isn't possible right now, and its good to have PHEV options for a few more years.

8:56 “you’re gonna have a good time in the back of this car”🤨
I’m guessing that they don’t make it electric because it would need a super massive battery.
20 miles from an 18kWh battery is absurd… You would need a 270kWh battery to have a 300 mile range on that car. That’s almost 3 Model S or 4 Model 3 long range worth of batteries.
EVs tech still has a long way to go before it’s ready to replace fossil fuels…
@@BennnWJK to replace them completely, sure… But most of the vehicles on the road could be perfectly replaced by current tech EVs.
And for most people it would even be a better user experience.
Also, I’m pretty sure there’s something very wrong with this particular car in the electric drivetrain. 1.1 mile per kWh is absurdly low. Even the Rivian R1T (with much worse aerodynamics and weight) does over 2 miles per kWh… And Hummer EV, which the least efficient EV on the market, is still 50% more efficient than the Bentley 🤔
@@Greatlatius that’s probably the dumbest shit i’ve ever heard in my life. We don’t even have the electricity to charge all these dumb EVs and they’re not sustainable. Battery technology sucks. Forced compliance has never worked.
@@Greatlatius It really wouldn't. Imagine the disgusting waiting times for chargers, moreso than there already is 😂😂😂😂 You'll have to wait a day to charge your car at a charging station. Mercedes EQS can comfortably hit 300+ miles of range with just over 100kwh battery pack. Hyundai IONIQ 6 is also not far behind even though it has a 77kwh battery. Not sure wether you are living in the current world??

Are you switching to front cam for recording yourself? Or do you flip the phone around? The quality looks good..
In what way is this car coach built?
They will release their first EV in 2025. By 2026 they will only produce Hybrids and EVs and by 2030 they transition to only producing EVs.
Too many buttons indeed, but I do prefer physical buttons for super obvious things you always use, like climate control. I do see tons of stuff that will be broken in 10 years and will cost a year's salary to fix. :)

Even without pro-res, the camera captures your matte-black forehead in amazing detail! Keep it going!
