My parents bought the 1st ones in 60--I thought it was underpowered &ad the 2 speed powerglide transmission at 55 mph you had no passing gear as it was out of range for low gear ???
Sounds like that car was a blast from the past! No passing gear at 55 mph must have been an adventure.
@@auto_icons Later years increased the horsepower &the 4 speeds were much faster--they also peaked up the suspension-I would consider buying 1 of the models--even had turbo's **
The true demise of the Chevrolet Corvair was the pony cars of the mid 60's, & other compacts being able to put a V8 in there engine bays. Everybody was more interested in straight line speed. If anything Nader helped prolong the production of the Corvair by at least 3 model years as it was going to be dropped with the introduction of the Camaro for 1967. Still Nader didn't help much either.
Ah, the Chevrolet Corvair - a classic tale of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. You're spot on about the rise of the pony cars and the allure of V8 power. And yes, Nader's infamous critique was the final nail in the coffin, but perhaps it did give the Corvair a bit more time in the spotlight. It's a fascinating piece of automotive history, that's for sure!
