  • Welcome to National Park #46, the Great Smoky Mountains! Spend a week with me exploring this national treasure. I’ll give you my advice from personal experience on how to deal with the inevitable crowds. No wonder there are so many people, the mountain views, the rivers, streams, and waterfalls, the fresh air, the wildlife, the hiking, history, and of course the commercialized tourist towns just outside the park are all big attractions. Whatever you’re looking for, it’s all here!

Thanks for sharing. I have not visited GSNP but when I do I go to the "other" side of the park. I enjoyed your memory of your Dad. "Stroll like dad"

Learned so much in this one! I had no idea that GSMNP was the most visited NP. If we ever go there I will definitely rewatch this video for your crowd-avoidance strategies. Also: "Stroll like dad" could be a great life motto.

A hiking hack... if you look for running clubs, some have trail runs. I met an 82 year old (with his dog Kevin) who wonders around texas to hike. He likes signing up and walking the 5ks (there are usually 5k,10k,25k cut off is usually about 7 hours) but if he were to get hurt, there are lots of people out on the trails - but usually it not crowded except the first mile. So for solo travels - it's a little bit of security.
