  • Welcome to National Park #48, Gateway Arch national park in St. Louis, MO. I traced Lincoln’s life as I traveled across Indiana and Illinois, to arrive at the Gateway Arch. Plan on spending a full day at this national park to really experience it, the trip to the top of the arch is well worth it! My weather luck continued with a couple of beautiful spring days. There were tornado warnings in St. Louis just before and just after my visit!

We were there in the 1989. I am very claustrophobic but managed to take the ride up (and down) so glad I did. It was awesome. Thanks again for the journey.

I am really afraid of heights so I was interested in your take on the arch. I went up in 1992, and I didn't stay up there very long. I swear I could feel it slightly moving. The IMAX theater portrayal of building the arch was equally frightening for me. I'm glad that you had a beautiful day. I would love to see the Lincoln museum. I've not been there before. Thank you for sharing your travels.

Love your review of the Lincoln museum and homes. (Have you seen the excellent Spielberg movie "Lincoln"? Really gets at the grief he bore, and the incredible challenge he had in passing the 14th amendment.) Re the Gateway Arch ... sorry, but Dave and I have always felt that it has no business being a National PARK. It could have been appropriately designated a National Monument ... but in our snobby view, it doesn't come close to the standard of natural beauty and land preservation that we associate with the highest honor of a National Park. Still, I didn't know people could go up to the top! Fascinating.

I have seen Lincoln and rented it again after my visit to Springfield. it was like the movie went from Black and White to Color, knowing so much more of the context. About Gateway Arch, others have made the same comment about the park's status...and I don't disagree. If Congress hadn't made the designation it would have saved me lots of time and gas! I got the most out of it, including widening my knowledge of US History.
