- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. You don't like any books out there so you write your own. 17 million other people read it too. You get a book deal from Random House and you become one of Time Magazines most influential young people. Moral of the story - something is missing in the world you create it yourself.
Beth Reekles is an avid writer, reader and drinker of tea. When she was only 15, she penned her young adult romance novel, The Kissing Booth. She began uploading it to the story-sharing platform, Wattpad, where it accumulated more than 19 million reads. At age 17, while she was still completing her A Levels in French, Spanish, Maths and Physics, Beth was offered a 3-book deal from Random House UK.
Originally from South Wales, Beth is currently an undergraduate of Physics at Exeter University. She has published three books with Random House: The Kissing Booth, Rolling Dice and Out of Tune. Beth was awarded the Scout’s Birthday Honours Badge for Writing in 2013, was named one of Time Magazine’s 16 Most Influential Teenagers in 2013 and was number 6 on The Times’ Top 25 Under 20 List in 2014. She has also been shortlisted for the Women of the Future Young Star Award 2013, the Romantic Novel of the Year Award 2014 and the Queen of Teen 2014 Award.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
I prefer "write the book you want to read" as opposed to "write what you know." A good researcher can write the book they want to read *about* the things they didn't previously know.
I'm glad I watched this, looks like she was out of her comfort zone but stuck through the talk and gave solid advice from her experiences despite the nerves, good on her.
She will go far this girl. Why? Because she has been in the pit, speaking publicly, the spotlight on her, which is not easy for anyone no matter how intelligent or experienced the public speaker is. She's young and probably knew she'd feel very nervous at the start. Moreover, she could well have been thrown in at the deep end here. If she was, she survived the test. But she remained composed just enough to carry her message through, successfully. That's character! And that's courage! (Successful public speakers probably do not appreciate, or choose to ignore, the positive, conducive environment that they may have grown up in that allowed them to gain early self-confidence.) So that's why she'll go far, in whatever field she does.
I deeply regret the fact, that I'm not particularly familiar with the type of literature and the writing styles, that this charming lady worked assiduosly, with a great passion and vision to develop (to the obvious joy and content of her rewarding young audiences, and against the somewhat limiting sometimes, as we can learn - circumstances). This, however, does not make me any less proud of her, .. And glad, that she was kind to share some of these detailed, personal insights, letting us better understand her experiences and perspectives on perseverence, wisdom, enviable foresigh and determination in developing her own talent and writing voice - despite deeply hidden (this often remains unraveled) obstacles and, perhaps jealously guarded, young talent's insecurities, which would all be otherwise a lot less easy to understand and include in our perceptions - especially - from the likely vantage point of the "more lucky", "more typically-gifted" or just more "lovingly encouraged", among us. - Great TedxTeen talk !
I still remember the shock of seeing the kissing Booth at school library and thinking "I've read that on Wattpad!"
It's amazing how writing one story on Wattpad has lead to such great success and achievements .Truly inspirational. Congratulations Beth :)
saf shire do people get there work stolen on wattpad? I've never been on the site, but it seems that would be common?
and now its a Netflix original! it really is crazy and Beth is a real inspiration for all writers out there💛
My 9 year old wants you to know she likes your video. It is inspiring.
A few years later, "The Kissing Booth" gets a movie adaptation
Adrianna Piccolo yep! 😁
I'm waiting on the third film👀
And another few years later, there's a third movie!
This has given me more confidence in my writing. My friends showed me Wattpad and I was in heaven. My friends were a big confidence booster, and thank you for even more. Congratulations on the books. I havent read them yet, but I will. I promise. (Hopefully you see this...)
Her words were very inspiring! I'm starting my own novel and although I'm in a bit of a writing slump, I won't give up. Writing has deep down been a passion of mine. Whether it be short stories, poems, novels, screenplays etc. Beth has certainly motivated me to battle my shyness of showing my work.
This is the best advice I've heard from any of the writing help videos. Kinda the thought process I had going into mine. When I began writing music I read a quote where Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top (of all the people right?) said "Write the songs you want to hear." This is still how I write music and this is what I am doing in my novel. I'm so glad she wrote what she wanted to read and it paid off. No matter your ability, let creativity flow. Don't worry about your skill, knowledge or experience. What ever creative thing you do or are inspired to do...do it.
I've watched many Ted talks about everything from science to economics, and yours is one of my favorites. Can feel the honesty and passion you have for what you're talking about. Really appreciate hearing your perspective, and thanks for the advice!
Hm, yes.
This is soooo motivational, I’ve watched the kissing booth on Netflix but only heard of it on Netflix so I never really knew the author but hearing her story of how it came to be is so enlightening! Love this
Beautiful speech, humbly delivered. What a lovely lady, so inspirational! Thank you
That's a lot of wisdom in a young mind. Good for you. You seem to have picked up all the right things about your purpose in life, and the best ways to fulfill them. The way you speak is quite inspiring and I'm sure many viewers, like me, would like to listen to you narrating your experiences, again.
You seem like an honest and open person, Beth. I hope you have a great success!
Beautiful advice. Touched me. I’m encouraged. Thank you
The thought of writing the book you want to read is simply thrilling and it presents a new way of thought for me in writing. Totally enjoyed this
Inspiring story!! Loved the way she has described her journey.
I am an author and have essential tremor so I am so glad to see that Beth didn't let the latter get in the way of her pursuit of the former. I know another prolific and successful romance writer who also has the condition. I hope Beth continues her writing even as she pursues her career in the sciences would encourage her to continue motivating others to go after whatever they want in life! Thanks for sharing Beth!
Brenda Collins Deeks how can I find like you am 29yrs old I started writing since teen age am in higher University Right now graduating I still undate my creative writing and mostly true story it's 4000 words quickly I can make it more but how can I know it's good edited or attractive I am looking help English is my second language
Thank you
Just saw the trailer for The Kissing Booth within the last ten to twenty minutes. Read it YEARS ago when I was younger and found wattpad. It was a hit on there, and I do remember it getting published. That was already a large milestone for any reader on the website, but to get their book adapted into a film? Amazing. However, this is astonishing to see because there are so many small writers who just enjoy sharing their stuff through wattpad and this is a possibility for so many of them. As a really old fan of her first novel, I'm really excited to see it blossom into a film and acknowledge her success.
Wonderful talk, very inspiring! Thank you so much 💗
Thank you Beth Reekles for sharing your thoughts on writing.
This is one of the best ted talks ever, im glad I watched it
The talk, though brilliant, wasn’t my favorite part. The fact that she was so shaky, vulnerable and still carrying on with the speech was in fact the demonstration of the bravery she was talking about. Good stuff.
Wow! Such a sweet talk Beth! And so inspiring! 👍👏👏👏💕
What a beautiful and inspirational young woman. I enjoyed this immensely.
This was really inspiring! Thanks Beth ❤.
thanks for sharing your story on how you started
What an amazing talk!!! What an amazing human being!!!!!!
Hold your horses shannon
I can relate to her! I'm 15 and I've been writing since I was 10... But my problem is that I could never finish a story... I never have time for writing because of school and Clubs and other teenage stuff. And when I do write I write on Wattpad and I post a lot but nothing is ever finished and I feel like that's my goal. To FINISH something. Watching this has really given me a push to do so so thank you X
CRcHeRiEmCb Trust me, I am the same way... I have these amazing ideas, but really just no way to finish them. All you need is the motivation to write and you're all set!
CRcHeRiEmCb
now you are 17, i have never wrote a book, nut havesome 35 years resechinng since i had 15 years, on how to write well told stories, but never founfd a good answer an the subjet. Wattpad is so amazing!!
This girl is amazing. I love you
I sense tension in her voice. But she conveys a very important and powerful message. And it was well delivered.
I like you :). You are very inspirational. Thank you for this video. I have started writing a story about my life and it seems like there is sooo much to write about. You have helped give me some courage
Her voice💜💜 amazing...
That is exactly me. Thank you!

I want to start writing today, thank you very much :)
Proud of you, Beth. Your old friend from watpad!
This was amazing, thank you so much for sharing your story! You are so inspiring!
"Everything in life is a story, So make your life something worth writing about"'
Oh, she's just like me! I read Eleanor and Park and I was like, "Wow. I need to find another book like this." But I couldn't. So I wrote one, too! :)
Very inspiring!!
Wonderful advice.
I’m so inspired 💜
So inspirational ❤
I understand everything you’re saying!
I’ve always liked reading and when I first read the kissing booth I said I wanted to be able to write a book like her. I hope one day I can finally write a book people will like even if it doesn’t get many reads.
Wow that is so inspiring
Omg I feel this on every level but I am still working on my first novel!!
She sounds and looks a bit nervous xd but nice speech and it's really inspiring.
+animeislife_ Very inspiring :)
It's nice to see someone genuinely looking nervous. This girl here will give hope to many who see this, fear public-speaking, yet have to do public-speaking at some time in their life or career. Or at a wedding!
She recovered well. She summoned up strength from somewhere to remain composed. I wonder if successful public speakers have, pound-for-pound, this young lady's courage.
Thank you for motivating for writing. I am passionate about writing and will write a lot of novel for making the world a better place. Thank you for sharing your story.
Imagine if she hadn’t. Take the step, don’t be scared. Her life changed because of her.
#GOALS
she is massive thanks to god you are my universe and i got the chance to see your story🥰🥰

Great stuff...
One of the big goals in my life is to publish my book.
Dear Beth -
My name is Antonio and I appreciate the wonderful TED Talk that you did! Thank you for the motivational talk. I am a budding writer, mostly non-fiction, so I took your advice of “write what you want to read” very seriously.
If I might offer one piece of advice that might help you is to take typing classes, if you still can, and learn to touch type. Touch typing, without a doubt, is one of the greatest skills that I have.
I also suffer from Parkinson’s Disease / Essential Tremor, but thanks to my ability to touch type, I am still able to type because the touch typing ‘breaks through’ the tremor and gives me the ability to still communicate effectively what I have to say.
Take good care, Beth, and good luck in whatever you choose to do with your life. Best wishes,
~Antonio Dominion
I’d really love to hear how this young lady is doing now, in 2021.
I swear to god. Teens give better ted talks than adults
Simply Sookie Yes. They're not selling anything yet.
What you write isn't important, the importat thing is whether you like writing? Do you want to share it with people? Or do you want to hide it where only you know your character's epic journey into the unknown. I put my own past into my stories and sharing some of the things in the stories just seems scary to me.
I find it therapeutic and easy to write from/about my past regrets, loves, friends, bullies and all. I think there was a physiological therapy method where the subject write their trauvmas, kind of like that. Also I never seem to find the drive to write more as my interest shifts after the first chapters.
Nice!
Pss: I am going to get the book. And hopefully the blue ray too
¡Poder Wattpad!
I hope there is a community for architecture too
write the book you want to read
Beth Reekles is hired. She gets access.
is she still publishing on wattpad....????
Vampire & warewolf 3:06 😂😂
Please guys tell me If anyone knows website where I can upload my books too..
Nice
I am 16 years old and I love to write a story or perhaps be a storyteller but I don't know how to start going about it
I read the book. It's funny how the character Elle came from Rochelle. And she doesn't like being called Shelly. Lol that's the first time my name was mentioned and my nickname too. But I love my nickname. Lol the opposite of this story is I end marrying my bestfriend. And his the eldest. 😁😂🤣
❤️
And now it's a movie
👏
That was nice, that was nice
now a netflix movie
Any wattpaders here?👋
This is irrelevant but she kind of looks like Allision DeLaurentis from PLL
Also, consider that even the best writers like Steve King constantly proofread their work for grammar, and punctuation mistakes. He suggest to get a basic grammar book and get back to the basics, You are probably better than you think you are. Writing is really just capturing YOUR VOICE on the page. Do you have a VOICE others seem to respond to ? (prep) That matters most: getting YOU on the page. Mechanics must be there to be taken seriously. There ARE people you can hire to do this on your final manuscript. We all "sharpen our claws " each day as writers. JUST WRITE your story or the story of others...do not think of grammar . Put your VOICE down. Then look later at places to clean up. If you have a Story that might interest or help others. IF you have a knowledge base that makes your VOICE valuable or EXPERIENCE in a field...this will organize your thoughts in a way that will enhance every part of your life. The depth of self-reflection alone is worth writing. It might not be your thing. But...maybe it is. Even if it is only putting your thoughts into a Journal for fifteen minutes each night before bed. It is not easy. It takes work and diligence. Don't do it for someone else. Make sure if you take the leap...you have done for YOU and no one else.
"Write the book you want to read" OR, maybe you should do an Audiobook. Maybe you need a new challenge because you've slayed all the dragons in the Kingdom lol NEVER STOP challenging yourself. SPIRAL OUT. KEEP. GOING.
I see errors above lol It is part of getting your thoughts down. You clean it up later, It is not being picky or beating up on you; If we English majors did not see something there we would not offer our own skills to help you. JUST GET IT DOWN. Worry about the mechanics later.
What books do YOU read? What books SPEAK to you? Look at them. Write the kind of book you would enjoy reading. (It is what I do)
How to write your own story? Throw in every cliche you know until it sounds like a book.
tem algum brasileiro aqui
I have essential tremor
step 1. dont write in red ink
Any wattpader here???

No offense to Reekles but the first time I read Kissing Booth my impression was concisely "teenshit". It still is. There's nothing seminal or interesting in it which bored and disgusted me like hell. Maybe I have read too many good stuffs already. Even an real life episode of mine was more dramatic, romantic, crazier than her story. The success of her work made me hate living on this planet even more.
P.S. I've been working on my own book for 4 years so I applaud her for giving a talk to encourage people to write.
Well you should remember that there is many kind of people who like different types of stories. Success of her book isn't in any way away from you. Actually it's often the opposite. It may attract people who don't usually read to discover new books.
Indeed many real life episodes are much more interesting than what usually is seen in movies or books, but that is actually quite irrelevant before someone has written a book or made a movie about it. You are in the exactly same situation as the girl in the video. She didn't like the common subjects of books available and started to write one from her own perspective.
A bit like many PC gamers aren't understanding the hype going around very simplistic mobile games, which are a huge success. Why are they a success, when traditional PC games are much deeper gameplay wise, have more story, graphics, everything. But the truth is actually that the audience is different.

Thanks for your reply, man. Actually I can't understand why she had to write her own book because that kind of boy-meets-girl setting is so common. When I learned that she also wrote out of frustration with books out there that she couldn't like, I expected her to write something much more unique.
I'm a gamer and enjoy both big games and small games. It's not about the amount of content or graphics but about unique features of the games. This is my favorite small games list on Kong www.kongregate.com/accounts/Mastertek/favorites which comprises of not the best games but games that each makes at least a "point". Kissing Booth made no "point".
People also have core principles in picking things. I only enjoy things that can activate at least a bit of my intelligence. When I read KB, I felt dumbed down.
+Anh Viet Anything that starts with 'No offense' is invariably offensive. The book just wasn't for you, its appeal was lost on you, but that doesn't make it a bad book or 'teenshit' as you put it
+Luke Carter No offence but I agree with what you said about the "book just wasn't for you".
