I have both the Bose and Zulus, I agree with pretty much everything you said. There is one thing I'm finding super annoying with the Zulus and not a single reviewer has called out. There is a terrible echo from my own voice. Do you not hear the echo? Looks like I have the same GMA 345 panel you do (headsets set to stereo). while the Bose sound normal the Zulus sound like I'm talking in a canyon. Incoming audio sounds fine, just my own voice gets the echo.
@@jeffd324 I had the echo problem before the firmware update. Once I installed that it got much, much better.
@@LewDixAviation thanks for the quick reply. I just check the app. I did get a new app version of 1.1(229) but no update to my headset FW. I'm on version 1.6.0. Does this match what you are using? I have an iPad not an iPhone.
Ok after leaving the app open for 15 minutes I did just get prompted from a FW update. Taking the update now and will report back after my next flight.
A couple years ago, when I was shopping for my first ANR headset (was using a DC H10-13.4 at the time), it came down to the Bose A20 and the Lightspeed Zulu 3. I went with the Lightspeed because it was less expensive, it has the thinner Kevlar-coated wires, and I liked that it had more metal in the construction. The conventional wisdom at the time was that the Bose had slightly better noise cancellation tech, but the Lightspeed was still very good. I liked the Zulu 3 very much, but in some situations I went back to the DC (e.g. when flying with an instructor) because I didn't want to chance the batteries dying during the flight. I carry spares, but I'd still have to mess around trying to install them.
I recently purchased a Delta Zulu headset. For me, the rechargeable battery pack (with regular battery backup pack) and the built-in carbon monoxide detector were irresistible features. I also like that both cables attach to the top of the control module rather than one attaching to the bottom. Makes it easier to stow the control module in a side pocket or similar if desired. Like you, I wish the mic boom was longer. It's long enough, but only just. It could use another 0.5 to 1 inches. I also question the choice of connector it has for charging the battery pack. Instead of USB type C, they went with a "UAC" port. This means you need to use their cabe for charging. I haven't been able to find a lot of information about this connector standard but it appears it enables connecting multiple sources of audio and data. For example, it looks like it can carry analog audio in lieu of a 3.5 in. audio jack.
In short, I think you really can't go wrong with either one, but for me the built-in CO detector is a real killer feature of the Delta Zulu and other manufacturers will probably have to respond in the coming year or so.
Really great comparison Lew. I personally fly with the Bose A20 over Lightspeed mainly because of all the people that recommended it if I were to go to the airlines since it as a TSO approval. That's my plan considering I'm a commercial student now. I've been using the Bose for almost two years now and I'd say it's pretty comfortable, even on long cross countries. I honestly wanna get a pair of the DZ one day just to have another anr headset and the fact that it connects to an app where you can record is pretty cool let alone the CO detector.
PS. Could you maybe do a video on your camera and audio setup? I want to record some of my flights, I just don't really know how to set that up with a gopro :)
Great video. Love my Delta Zulu because of the CO detector. Those little CO detector cards stuck on the panel are crap and I wonder if you'd even be able to hear a panel mounted CO detector with a loud cockpit. It's nice knowing the DZ will tell me if my airplane is trying to poison me!
Thanks for the great review! I got a pair of Osprey sunglasses and I'm loving them. I could not agree more how comfortable these are when flying compared to my "brand" sunglasses... On to the headsets, would you say it's worth the upgrade from the Zulu 3 to the Delta Zulu?
I understand this is more directed to GA, but Iâd say for aspiring airline pilots make sure the headset you are spending some serious money on is TSO authorized. They may find themselves working for a company that requires their pilots to wear TSO authorized headsets, and one of these is not. Just came to mind while I was watching this.
Excellent video as always Lew. đ€đŒâïž
I'm fairly certain that most airlines provide an allowance to purchase an approved headset to their aircrews.
@@dafox0427 no they don't
I have the Bose, bought the Zulu's and the Delta Zulu's to try all of them out and make my owner comparison....after flying with them all , my Bose win , the audio quality is superior even with the noise cancelling off on the ground ... the zulu's , both sounded very thin without the active cancelling on ... but even the noise cancelling was better with the Bose IMO. 'for the love of flight' John
Nice features on the Lightspeed, and really like the idea of a built in CO detector. I enjoy my DC One-X, though.
As for the trim crank, when youâre sitting in the left seat, imagine the handle smacking you in the head as you turn it. Smack the forehead, your head tilts back and your nose points up. Smack the back of your head, your nose points down. Sitting on the right, just imagine smacking the studentâs head. Or Otto.
HA love that tip for the trim!
Iâd love to try the DC too
Great video. Are you back at ORL? Still waiting to hear that story.....
My man Lewis dropping an extensive comparison video one week before Bose releases their new headset đ Gotta do another one soon!
đ waited a bit too long to release this one eh?
Great video. Loved that cessna spawn in the game @0:49. ;)
I found Lightspeed to be my preferred headset initially my first reason was the passive noise reduction just made the work that ANC was doing to be a lot more natural. I just couldn't "hear" the ANC. then the comfort was just better for me, new features look dope might be time to upgrade to the Delta zulu
does the delta zulu mic rotate 360 degrees or still just 180 like the Zulu?
As a student, I rely on the expertise of those in the know from people that use the items...... Thank you for the video, its extremally helpful in making proper choices. Thanks again Lew, owe you again.
I prefer the Lightspeed. It's what I use. But I 100% agree with your assessment of both. I mostly like the way the Lightspeed fits and cups my ears. Good quality noise canceling and it feels nice to wear. But there is nothing wrong with Bose.
Absolutely agree!
Can we get this again for the a30 vs Lightspeed delta zulus
I just started flying so I went with the David Clark's. Now that I've decided to record my flights, how do I go about using whatever headset to link to my gopro 4 so I can get my instructor's comments and critiques in the vodeos?
I have A20's AX's Lightspeed 2's Lightspeed 3's and Lightspeed PFX's. Haven't tried the Delta Zulu's yet. But I pretty much default to the Bose A20's. I'm constantly going from plane to plane and the A20's allow both LEMO power and battery power. The Lightspeeds only allow LEMO if its a LEMO and Battery if its a battery. The Bose A20's also seem to be the most durable. Zulu 3's have an upgrades cable but I still have issues with them.
Long time viewer, LewDix! Great video, as always.
I also have both the A20 and Delta Zulu.
I use the DZ as my primary headset in my plane ('65 Piper Cherokee 235) and the A20 for my passenger or when I'm the passenger in another aircraft (moved the mic to the right side). In fact, that's one A20 advantage--right-side mic.
The other main difference is that the A20 can connect to multiple Bluetooth sources whereas the Delta Zulu only connects to one at a time. I often have my cell phone and iPad when I am flying. I need to run my EFB on my cell phone to get warnings in the Delta Zulu where the A20 can be connected to both and switch between the two on the fly. This is useful for getting a clearance via phone then back to your EFB for the flight.
If you use the recording function of the Delta Zulu it does drain the battery quicker, just a FYI. It is helpful though as it's like a poor-man's intercom audio cable. If you have the recording function active and then you start filming a video on your iPhone (yes, only iPhone) you will get the intercom audio in the video. Kinda neat for some quick flying videos.
I did most of my training and flying with the A20, while I've had the Delta Zulu for a few months in my own plane. I like each for different reasons. But, they are expensive and having both isn't the best option for all. I just thought I'd help with my observations.
Happy flying!
@MooneyPilot Yup, that's the A20 advantage over the DZ. I noticed after my first flight with the DZs that I wasn't getting Foreflight alerts from my iPad. I fired it up on my phone and started getting alerts.
I ended up capitalizing on running Foreflight on both by having my checklists in Foreflight on my cell always up and ready. So, I do like both headsets, they are just different.
Thanks from pointing out the Bluetooth issue
I have flown several Cherokees, and I now own a Cherokee 140 with the disco trim. And TBH I much prefer the trim on the ceiling. So much so that I'm considering a Piper Comanche as my next airplane because I love the ceiling trim so much.
Too many - in fact ALL of the other Cherokee's I've flown (Archer, 180, Arrow) have the trim wheel between the seats. And insufficient space between the seats to get a decent grip on the trim wheel. In the Arrow that I flew, it had electric trim and that was ok. I still prefer the ceiling handle. I agree that it takes a little bit to get used to.
I will agree that sometimes it's a tight squeeze to get your hand down in-between the seats for the "normal" trim. I do prefer that though. But this just means you're a better disco-er than I am! đș
I like the disco trim. I like the electric on my Arrow too. The wheel jammed between the seats, not as much.
From the left seat, every time you want to trim up, imagine brushing your hands upwards along your face. Trim down you swipe your hand down across your face. Youâll get it right every time.
Insightful stuff here Lew. Youâve gotta do another comparison eventually when the new Bose series comes out end of month.
I had no idea Bose were coming out with a new one! They almost certainly wonât be sending me some so to make a video Iâll have to buy them đ«Ł Letâs see how much they cost
@@LewDixAviation haha, that would explain why you did the video before next week. Iâm looking forward to it, and they should certainly have you on their list, who do we all need to talk to about that đ€
Seems like it's going to be the new A30s
I have a head like a đ„„ as well. Was looking into getting a decent headset Lewis so might go with the lightspeed.
Head like a đ„„ đđđ
I use the Lightspeed Delta Zulu it is a game changer đ€! Kind regards vom Austria
Classic David Clark with an ANR retrofit. I have $250 in the whole setup and they work great.
Been flying with my A20 for almost three years. Had a Bose X before that. Had a Red Baron (yep, cheap POS) before the X, starting in 2001. My current backup/pax headset is a Faro, only about an hour of use on it (nobody wants to fly with me :( ). I appreciate that everyone has their own preferences, but I'll stick with my A20s for a while longer until the A30's initial and inevitable bugs are worked out.
You should try David Clark's high end headset and see how they compare as well. I have friends who have them and really love their comfort and audio quality.
I'd love to!
Love the vids Lew but I think you missed an important factor, the ANR quality. Which is better??
Audio quality was won by Bose, ever so slightly. But you canât go wrong with either headset. Although now youâre paying a lot more for Bose.
With my pc audio setup the lightspeed sounded better than the bose. The quick cut across at around the 21 minute mark highlighted that even more. Although when actually using them I'll take your word that the bose sounded better.
I like my DC One X. Very comfortable and sound great
Just listening to the lightspeed, it sounds more clear in this video.
Lightspeed 3 user here. Prefer it over the Bose as well. Nice vid Mr. Dix ââ
Thanks!

Thanks for all you do, man!
haha thanks! Great to hear!
Hold up, itâs 4713C! Are you flying that more now? I work at sheltair ORL, let me know if you ever need anything next time you come by!
The most important takeaway I got from your review, Florida is hot. :) I'm in Georgia so I feel the struggle.
Serious note, the Zulus are now $1,199. Still makes them cheaper by $100 vs the A30.
Which do you feel won in the ANR department?
Are you getting the new A30? Would like to get your opinion on both since Iâm looking at buying one or the other. The audio recording on the delta Zulu is a great option that I have been looking for and might be the option that pushes me to that headset.
I donât think Iâll be getting it. Tried it on at sun n fun but itâs not an âupgradeâ from my A20âs. I canât justify the price. Iâll have a small review of my thoughts in my SNF vlog
is that a weight on the bottom right side of the yoke?
You may wanna try David Clark One-X Noise Attenuating Headset
Do you have to make any mono/stereo adjustments with A20s or DZ? I have the Zulu 3 and depending on the aircraft radio I have to take the batteries out to make the adjustment so the headset works properly
Iâve never had to make an adjustment
DC One X needs more love. Superior design to both in regards to comfort.
I've often thought that headset manufacturers should have a few different sizes in the same way that Flying Eyes has different size frames. Why? Because we all have different size heads! I recently switched to Lightspeed Zulus from Bose for the exact reasons that Lew describes. But, I have several friends with smaller or different size heads who say that, for them, Bose are much more comfortable than Lightspeed. It really is a sizing thing I think!
It's definitely a personal thing. What works for one may not work for another. Thanks for the insight, and great sunglasses!
my main issue with headsets like that is that huge assed block you have half way down the cable... for me it would get in the way. I have an old non ANR headset and just has the small mono/stereo switch right by the connectors.... the instructor has the a20s and he's always fiddling with the stupid huge block as it's always getting in the way
Interested in a comparison to the David Clark OneX, as Iâve been considering all three!
Iâd love to get my hands on a set!
Was going to mention that. I got the OneX because I found them to be more comfortable when I tried the Bose A20 and the DC OneX side by side. (Two CFIs had them at my flight school). No one had a Zulu so I didn't consider that. I will say that fitment is a personal thing. As far as the performance, I have been really happy with the OneX. The seals seem much more compliant to the point I can wear a beanie (it's cold here in MN) and sunglasses with thicker arms without losing the seal to my head.
Again it's a personal thing though. I imagine the shape of your head will dictate comfort.
@@Fast351 thanks. Iâm a David Clark guy and have always owned their headsets. I tried on the Bose/Lightspeed/Clark at Oshkosh this past year and yesâŠit was before the release of the Delta Zulu. I was impressed with the OneX, but donât know how it compares to the DZâŠ
2nd comparison video I've seen on these two sets, as well as one comparing the A30 to the Litespeed. In every video, I think the Litespeed sounds better. When you speak, it is more clear and has a bit more bass / midrange in it. The Bose in every video sounds very "tinny" for lack of a better term.
Iâm gonna wait till the new Bose aviation headset comes out here pretty soon!! Itâs about time they come out with a new one.
My partner is very excited for the new headset to release. She has been eyeing my A20s up for a while!
Wow youâre cute⊠and yes⊠Iâm going to wait and see what the new one is like. I am leaning more towards the DZ though.
LEW.... VERY VERY NICE Landings my friend
How long can you record on delta Zulu?
For us everyday Joes on a budget, go with the Lightspeed Sierra. Save $300 and still get phenomenal performance.
I used to wear Sierra back in the day
Bose a20 gen 2 / Bose a30 are coming out in the next week or 2
Fabulous review đźđźđźđźđźđź
Is the carbon monoxide detector good for the life of the headset? Or does it need to be replaced at some point?
From my research, itâs likely the detector will have to be replaced at some point. But Lightspeeds have a 7 year warranty so refurbishing that should be no issue
Rockin the Kore Aviations right now. Wife says I donât fly enough to justify either the LS or Bose đ
What wife says, goes. Do not stray!
both of you make me very sad
Love ya bro, but should have waited till the new Bose comes out. I'm a Lightspeed guy, but timing wise, this is like comparing the PS5 vs the PS4
Had no idea about a new Bose headset coming out đ
I guess you have to review the Bose A30 now đŹ
Doesnât bose come out with new ones in like seven days?
I have light speed . I thibj they sound so much better .
I just hate that i cannot get my cell phone audio to come through them even though i set up the bluetooth
Ever tried the in-ear ProPilots?
Never. Iâd like to try them though

đ It may have been emphasised because I am indeed also a child
I did the fanboy choice with Bose. Iâve used David Clarkâs before, but Bose appeared to be the GA standard. Design is great, comfort is decent and voice quality is outstanding. If the foundation ANR is spot on, then all the cool apps and sliders wonât make an appreciable difference. There is a reason why 80-90% of flying videos feature Bose headsets.
Its hard to audition expensive headsets and no one wants to bother with buying and exchanging so they settle with the one with the strongest marketing.
Just like the flight training world has been brainwashed to like Cessna, we pilots have been brainwashed into thinking Bose is the only option. I love my Bose headset and was struggling to find the desire to use another one in the Lightspeed, but I'm glad I did.
Now just the David Clark ANR headset
wish Lightspeed had used a modern USB-C connector.
0:47 you "bounce" the video but look at the tail of the cessna back there. someone's being punchy with the brakes!
11:00 I've seen/heard that same bad static from the A20 in some planes.
Shopping for a new headset. Leaning towards the delta zulu as one ear is a worse than the other and hope the software can help. It just kills me that headsets this pricey...everyone sells lightspeed and bose for full list. Never a deal, or sale. Expensive hobby I know but full list just pains me. đ Might even grab a20 if someone blows out some old stock.
My biggest reason I don't like my Bose is because of my head size. Larger heads get squeezed a bit more with the Bose so I've actually been looking into David Clarks or Lightspeeds
For reference, I'm 6'5" (195.5cm) with 8 3/4 head (22.2cm)
Yea. We big headed people have to house more of a brain so having something clamping is detrimental.
@@LewDixAviation Especially on long cross countries. I did 9 hours and by hour 5 they were really starting to hurt.
The guy I was flying with was complaining about his sunglasses so I used the opportunity to plug my Flying Eyes as well as your channel ;)
Next up - break down the Lightspeed headsets? Lightspeed DZ vs Z3 vs S?
Good idea. If I had all of those haha
Lightspeed, get on this! LewDix viewership is all ears (see what I did there?) for a product breakdown!
Your voice sounded better on the Litespeed
Can you do one one the A30 pls
Hmm - I wonder how it compares to the A30 ?
The Balls (Bose) are bet er mate âđ»đ
Interesting to compare them - thank youđâïžđ
I believe that the DC One Xs are more comfortable than A20s. I've got A20s, I still can't decide about the spring unit - perhaps my head shape is weirdđłđđ The new A30s are supposed to be better, less clamp force - I've no experience of them.
The LS DZ maybe higher spec on paper (sadly the app only works on phones starting with an "i" in front of their name?đ€đ) the DC OneX's are superb too, but in the UK, the back up and parts etc for LS and DC? Sketchy to say the least. Bose aviation and domestic products (Eg headphones)? Good service plus parts availability is good for consumable/perishable parts. You pays yer money and makes yer choice I guess. And now we have the A30s toođ€đ€
Shame the A30s don't have armoured cable (but the DZ's don't either?đ€), but the easy clip mic change is superb, avoids the need for a screwdriver. Also won't the LSDZ's require the CO meter maintaing in a year or two, don't they degrade, not sure if they're mildly radio active toođ€đłđł
who doesn't love a good muff.
Pls do a A30 review
Thereâs a new Bose headset coming. I sense a rematch in the future
We'll see. I didn't know there's a new one coming out but I'd like to get my hands on it.
Thank you for the review. My personal experience with Lightspeed has been really bad. I had two Zulus with broken cables and there were no spare parts available from the manufacturer. The support was horrible and now the headsets are essentially garbage. I can only warn against purchasing a Lightspeed headset based on my experience.
Seeing the mic boom on the other side of peopleâs face bothers me too!! 9:41
a difference no one covers in their comparisons and reviews. The mic boom geometry. If I swing BOSE out of the way, the mic hits my eyebrow. The Lightspeed swings clear of my face and head.
i have to say that in these videos, the mic sounds a lot better in the bose
And I think the exact opposite :-)
i bought the A20 because I do not plan on buying a new headset ever at these prices.. i paid $1300 after tax for the A20, insane price to me but it is what it is. They are TSO which does not mean anything performance wise, more of a monopoly on FAA. My reasoning is that I dont want to buy a TSO headset if I get an airline job if I owned a nonTSO headset. Otherwise I would have gone for the Zulu 3s even because of the comfort
Yea the prices are definitely a downer for any of the headsets. It's an investment though. The Bose is a great headset so you didn't go wrong picking that one. You wouldn't have gone wrong with the Lightspeed either. The TSO is definitely something to think about if the airlines are where you want to go.
Bose A30 is coming soon
No APP for us Android users for the lightspeed. Super disappointing but I still love my DZ
I have an android phone and ipad when flying. do you need to be constantly using the app or am i safe to use the ipad for firmware updates and the android for bluetooth music
