  • I love doing discovery flights. I like to make them as interactive as possible to show the student a true version of how to fly an aircraft. This is their first opportunity to get behind the controls and see if being a pilot is what they truly want to do!
Trevor came down to Florida from Canada to take his first flight with me. He revealed that his Grandfather was a Private Pilot which made this all the more special.
    Enjoy the flight!

Flashbacks!!!! Not so long ago for me. Partly inspired by your channel (watched your channel almost since the beginning), and fulfilling a long held desire (I'm 50). I'm now 35 hours into my UK PPL. Your hands-off approach to discovery flights is just amazing. Balls of steel sir! That sense of "alot going on" is so very true. I was reminded of this feeling on my most recent navigation training flight. Timing, PLOG, radio, look-out, checks, I felt like I was back at day one again, or those first days in the circuit. I had to consciously remind myself of this to mitigate that imposter syndrone that grabs you from time to time. Seeing you celebrate all the wins throughout this video is just fabulous, and reminds me of my own journey to date. Your 'student' got a proper taste, and I hope he catches the bug too. Nice work.

I had my Discovery Flight yesterday on a 172 - my first step towards my PPL! I was lucky my instructor let me taxi and fly quite a bit, including the takeoff. It was incredibly eye opening and showed me my years of flight simulator 'training' is nothing like the feel of actually piloting an aircraft!

Recently I took up 2 guys in my plane for their first ever flight. I let them fly the plane around Central FL and handled everything else while I sorta taught them how things work. I was so happy to do it! I knew these guys so I had faith they weren't gonna try to kill me but I knew they were trimmed out and just doing everything properly. It was things like that that gives me the drive to one day go for CFI to continue the fun. I have a brand new baby so training is completely out of the mind right now but in the future I'd really like to do it. I taught so many guys at work to drive the big trucks so teaching was laid back and fun and it's even more fun flying!

My discovery flight was a NIGHTMARE. My CFI was changed on me three time in two weeks. When I showed up to the school, I had a 4th new CFI. She was extremely kind, but she initially hesitated to bring me up because the weather was terrible. It was a beautiful sunny August day (2023), but EXTREMELY TURBULENT due to rising thermals. After she sat in her own thoughts for a minute, she said "You know what, if you want to go I'll take you up." I said "Yeah, if you think its okay, I'm okay with it," because I really didn't want to reschedule and wait for another month. That was a bad idea. First off my door wasn't sealed properly and it opened on me during take off. I called for her to abort the take off and she did, thankfully. Second time around we took off and holy shit, about 800ft up the plane dropped 10ft out of the sky, went up 15ft, shuddered, and did this continually for my entire 20 minute flight. Insane turbulence!!! One of the wildest rides Ive ever had in a plane. When we were landing we dropped out of the sky and got kicked off course due to some crazy strong winds from the run way and had to do a go around. We landed on the second attempt. When we landed my CFI said "Well, thats some of the worst conditions Ive flown in, so if you want to come back, just know you've been through the worst of it."
I've decided to go with a different flight school altogether.

I will never forget my first discovery flight back when I was 13. It was in 1993 at KISM back when they used to have air shows. I was a Boy Scout passing out programs and there was a Young Eagle tent that was giving away free Discovery Flights. Finally had the opportunity last year to start my aviation journey and got my Private Pilot Glider Certificate at age 42. (Well I guess technically it was when I became a Hang Glider pilot in 2021). Hope to start SEL training this Summer where it all started. I am looking forward to the many “first flight lessons” (for new ratings and endorsements) along the way towards my goal.

I literally had the same experience yesterday with the turbulent climb out. I took my discovery flight out of SNA in SoCal and I was getting tipped back n forth quite a bit and it made me super nervous. I needed a little assistance and then we started to have a smoother ride around 1,200 feet.

Great video! Great that Lew acknowledged a bit of sim time can be beneficial, when I was flying between age 12-16, my once every fortnight flying lesson, I'd always be tolf to keep my head up, whether it was because of my age or whatever, I do think as good as some sims are, they can sometimes give a sense of false confidence to some people, and in my case forgetting that VFR means keep your head out of the cockpit! P.s in my 4 years of having flyinh lessons and clocking up at least 80 hours, I was never given as much control of the plane as your 'student' has.

At 41, with the aviation job market desperate, you should be able to get a corporate job (or something else) if you'd like. I also wouldn't put it past an airline really needing pilots to hire you in your early-mid 40s. Maybe you _want_ to instruct (I do, and at 55 I'm working on getting my CPL/Inst current then training for CFI), and that's fine, but just don't close your mind to something else if you want! My nephew is a corporate pilot and told me last year that at 55 I could get a corporate right-seat at his company. He said pilots are rare right now so age doesn't matter as much.

My first flight with an instructor. We took off and got away from the airport (airport traffic area with an active tower) and then he had me take the controls. After doing straight and level flight for a while I noticed my instructor looking around and spending a lot of time looking at the ground. I did not say anything, just kept trying to maintain alt and heading. I looked at my 1 o'clock position and there was a DC3. Yep, old plane with 2 massive engines coming straight at our airplane. I seen the DC3 pilot's face. I loudly said "OH SHIT" That got the instructor's attention. He looked up, saw the DC3 and quickly shoved the control wheel all the way forward. My head turned left and went all the way back as the airplane pitched straight down. I could not move my head and was looking at the inside roof of our airplane. I remember thinking he better do something or we are going to crash into the ground. After leveling off and climbing he told me to take the controls again. I said no, let's go back to the airport. I never went back to that place again. I did find a better instructor who was great and I got a PPL. True Story.

Definitely. You can’t feel the control pressures on a home sim. Unless your setup is very expensive haha

"Is carb Heat important down here in FL"? the question implies that if its hot, the carburetor will not freeze. BIG misconception.

I hope he realizes that Canadian and American licenses are different enough that he’d have to choose which to start with. It’s transferable but he’ll have to train under the Canadian system.

Sometimes i feel those flight sims without the real controls are too unrealistic that they make unlearning and relearning the real stuff quite an uphill task.

talk about having the wrong door design, the smart companies made sure a student wouldn't waste time closing their door and just kept a door for the CFI.

At 3.42 into this vid your student applies full right aileron to turn right on the ground and you don't pick it up.. or even mention it. He thinks he's in a car with a steering wheel.

It takes some time to get used to steering with your feet. Wait until Lew introduces adjusting the flight controls for wind while taxiing. You could be full right aileron and steering with left rudder. Gets confusing fast.
