  • The flight review is important not only for currency but serves as a check up of a pilot's skills. It's a great time to work on whatever you think you need to brush up on. Rob came down to do his review with me, which I'm very grateful for. He is a great person and a self proclaimed nervous pilot.     I am definitely one that has this same type of nervousness that comes from a lack of confidence, but also from having very high standards for my own proficiency and being hard on myself for making mistakes. I like to think it makes me a better pilot at the end of the day 😉 As far as steep turns go, nothing better than hitting that prop wash and knowing you nailed it.

    Nice video! I teach to always start clearing turns to the left first because if a aircraft is taking you over from behind they should pass off your right and you don’t want to turn into them.

    I absolutely love the falling leaf stall demo. As a student it can be tiring to go up and hear "Okay show me slow flight, power on/off stalls, steep turns...etc." over and over again. A falling leaf stall demonstrates a mastery of the aircraft, adds variety to flight training, and goes above & beyond what's required in the ACS. Also, excellent flying Rob! I'm guilty of making the same landing face. Awesome t-shirt btw.

    I absolutely love your videos. You keep the instruction light and the humor and goodwill heavy. It makes a huge difference to students and qualified pilots like this one. I’m a ppl working on instruments and would have loved to have a CFII of your caliber. You truly have a gift of relating to people and setting them at ease. Not many instructors have that gift. Keep up the good work! Like to know how the airline gig is going too.

    Simply a great video. Such good information unpacked in this video. Rob is better than he thinks he is and your demeanor disarms and establishes confidence in folks. Flying is so.much fun. I try to fly 2-3 hours a week. This week I’m on a business trip thinking I should quit so I can fly more. That’s not really an option but I do love when I can fly for business. Keep these videos coming. They keep me inspired to fly more! Rob’s video at the end was the perfect. No head swelling!

    BFRs were fun to do - most of the time. I had a guy come for a flight review years ago and started off with "If you fail me, I am not coming back. I've been flying for 10 years and have 130 hours." Looking back on that situation with what I know now 20+ years later, that guy should have been sent home and to another flight school because that attitude is hazardous on so many levels. BFRs can't be failed, but additional training may be required and there is nothing wrong with that if extra training is needed. Pilots need to go into BFRs knowing that and know it's a session meant to help improve and refresh their flying skills and knowledge and bring up any recent changes to FARs, procedures, etc.

    Falling leaf stalls!! I was so scared of power on stalls. My CFI showed me falling leaf once and I can say that after doing it, my fear of spinning on a power on stall went away. Great rudder control work.

    Rob, Great job! I’m a nervous flyer too and Cardinal owner. After stopping flying for a couple years I just finished my flight review. But I’ve lost any ounce of confidence I had especially with landing. I really enjoyed and related to this video. Rob would love to be your Facebook friend from Dallas TX.     Steep turn to the left for me when flying from the left seat. I feel my body weight in a left turn below the horizon gives more stability and the aircraft "sits in the turn" as it were with less effort and input . A steep turn to the right I feel my body weight above the horizon and I feel I have to balance the aircraft more delicately and the opposite way round when flying from the right seat.

    Another Excellent video Lew! Rob, you did an amazing job! I too am starting work on commercial. After some time not flying, I find that I have lost confidence too.I have found this is more pronounced when I fly alone. Each flight instructor I fly with says similar things and never really touches the controls.I have found in my case, it probably has more to do with flying infrequently than anything. Currency does not equal proficiency, but proficiency usually does equal confidence, right? Currently, I am doing alot of PPL review, mixed in with commercial study to revisit those fundamentals...Which you can never really do too much. My hope is that between that and flying as much as my schedule and my wallet will allow, I will get it back, knock out commercial and then on to CFI/II. Best of luck in that same journey Rob! Lew, thanks again for continuing to educate and inspire sir!

      @@LewDixAviation Slightly different rules back here in the UK but as I have an FAA Commercial as well as a UK PPL I have to do both 😂 Coming back to the USA in July to do my ME add on and going to visit Oskosh, can’t wait

    Hate right turns, makes me little more sick in my stomach 😅 also, have some confidence issues now coming back and completing my ppl now in different state, weather, topology, cfi and a Cessna instead of a Cherokee! But I’m going to be just fine, it’s a matter of focus that should be just 100% and nothing else matters when you’re up in the air. Good luck on your commercial!!

    I’ve watched nearly all of your videos and glean something from every one of them. But, this one really resonated with me. I recently passed my PPL checkride in November and have the confidence jitters as well. Thanks for posting this video. Absolutely fantastic. (P.S. Thanks for the Va formula. I’m appalled that I didn’t learn or remember that from my PPL studies!)

    That was great! I'm older and just got my PPL a year and a half ago. I have almost 250 hours, but I still won't do stalls on my own. The steep turns I do in the light sport aircraft I fly are pretty good, but as soon as I do one in a C172, it goes to hell in a hand basket.

      It's just a matter of knowing the airplane. Every airplane flies differently. I still don't like stalls as a cfi but it's important that we can get in and out of them on our own. And be proficient in recovery. A lot of anxiety stems from not knowing. I recomend really doing deep into the aerodynamics of a stall so there are no unknowns when you do them. That's what helped me.

    I really like the falling leaf stall. I am a student pilot and will ask him to practice that. I think that will help me a lot with rudder control during a stall.

    Rob... friendly advise here. i used to have a yoke mount, and i switched out for a suction cup mount, and i mount mine to the left glass between the panel and the door in the Cessna 172 boat edition. It works great, and it is not moving around when i need to touch it, and the placement allows me to see if close up, as i also have transition glasses. and it works MUCH better being up high than down low. THe suction mount is like 40 bucks i think.

      @@LewDixAviation awesome. Yeah i started my Instrument "training" last night, with a friend that just needs to take his CFII check ride in a week. I flew under the foggles for 2.5 hours, and did 2 ILS approaches and an RNAV. my first approach looked like a snake, the last 2 were pretty descent. But having the IPAD mini up high, allows me to keep it in the line of sight for the flow, so that i am not flying head down in the clouds and get vertigo.
      A HUGE plus having it mounted high.

    There is a accident at my local airport in Australia where a student when out on a solo interacted with the auto pilot without instruction and ended up killing themselves. There was about 120 inputs into the autopilot. This is why most schools here now teach basic auto pilot use.

    Private pilot in training, I tend to do a better right steep turn than left, so the left gives me more trouble.

      Very interesting. For most people, the left steep turn is easiest due to left turning tendencies helping to “aid” in it

      I sucked at them too. Apparently you can do almost a hands off steep turn by using up trim. Haven't tried it yet. MzeroA channel has some videos on it. Sorry Lew. You probably do too lol
