- This video will delve into the epic fight scene in "Ip Man 3" between the protagonist, Ip Man, and a powerful and brutal gangster. Considered as one of the best fight scenes in cinema history, this fight features amazing Wing Chun techniques and excellent choreography. In this video, we will analyze this fight scene in detail, breaking down the moves and techniques used by Ip Man and the gangster. Whether you're a fan of martial arts films or just appreciate a good fight scene, this is a battle you don't want to miss.
"Disabling my sight? Worthy technique. To show my respect....
I DISABLE YOUR BREATHING!"
Correction, DISABLE YOUR EVERYTHING* 🤣
Disable your energy
If you look at the symbolism, Ip Man won each round. His broken staff was a little longer, he had one dagger left, and of course he gave the finishing punch. He was just better, barely...but still better. And you know Ip Man was serious too with the sleeves rolled up.
Very good assessment. It seems the scene was dropping subtle hints at Ip Man's superior technique while maintaining the appearance of an evenly matched fight.
thats because he fights defensively, and counter attacks when given the chance. So for him, being slightly better makes him a lot better.
I really liked Cheung Tin Chi. I think he won me over even though he was technically a “bad” guy in the movie. Just his idgaf demeanour about fightinf
And Mike Tyson is better then both.
Imagine if he wore a T-shirt....
I envy these guys ,it's like dancing ,when you get a martial artist as good as you and you pretend to fight but don't intend each other harm.Must be hard work but lots of fun.
I love how Ip Man's wife was all like "FUCK THAT. YOU GO FIGHT THIS MAN BECAUSE I KNOW YOU WON'T BE SATISFIED UNTIL YOU DO". This was after he tells her the only reason he didn't take the fight was because she was sick.
Ip wife is like chi-chi in the real world
@@pcortes1987 well not really. She stated in the movie that she loves n respects ip man for his fighting prowess. N she herself knows how beast he is at fighting. So while doesnt like meaningless fighting like the one against chen in part 1, she will put her complete and utter faith in his skills when needed, like this scene for instance. Or in the elevator scene. Or any of the MAIN BOSS fights in the series.
@@pcortes1987 chichi was dominating
"I never asked you to stop being a woman, don't ask me to stop being a man."
R.I.P to Ip Man's Wife, Cancer's a bitch
Ip Man 3 is still my personal fave film from the series.
Mostly because Cheung Tin-chi, as the main antagonist, is not just super mega bad guy who wants to rule the world or whatever. He's just a simple man trying to make a living for his son. Doing so sadly also leads to him doing some morally dubious things (seen also in the sequel, Master Z) but underneath, there is indeed a good and moral man.
It shows cos immediately after this, he smashes the sign that states him to be the Grandmaster because he knows that he doesn't deserve that title when he was beaten by a better opponent. That takes insane guts and humility because throughout the film, it's clear that he wanted to prove to himself that he was the best. It isn't even about fame or fortune to him. So to see him realize that he is not the best then decides to change given that realization is just amazing character development.
master z was so good

I LOVED his movie too
4:09 that counter got me every time
That's one of my favorite attacks Ip Man ever does in the whole series lol. It's great.
i come back to watch this scene and it always surprises me .. its so sudden and quick that you forget about it
@@chaosrealmer3455 it looks like a muay thai move
Interestingly, the elbow counter is an unorthodox move in Wing Chun to show that Ip Man (and by implication his master Leung Bik) had innovated Wing Chun style to incorporate more elbows and kicks. Which is part of why Tin Chi is seeking to show his orthodox style's superiority as well as why he's surprised by it: it's not within his own repertoire.

My favorite fight scene in the entire Ip Man saga. Donnie Yen is a damn phenomenal martial artist, especially if he can beat other masters. I totally respect him.
Max Zhang is pretty awesome too - a good foil to Donnie Yen here. And then he gets to be the protagonist in Master Z.
@@michaeljay7949 That is very true, I agree that Zhang is also an incredible fighter. Absolutely!
Yen is stated by martial arts greats Jackie Chan and Jet Li to be the best practical fighter in the Asian Cinematic Universe. He has mastery of several hand-to-hand combat forms under his belt, most notably: Tai Chi, Hung Ga, Jeet Kune Do, Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Hapkido, Wrestling, Wushu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Taekwondo, Karate, Sanda, and Wing Chun. He is also an incredible acrobat, skilled in Parkour. He describes himself as a "mixed martial artist" and believes that combining multiple styles together makes the most effective and harmonious style.
Wth the other guy is equally as impressive and gets no respect. Interesting.
@@CJTranceAddiction He gets lots of respect. What are you complaining about?
“There is more to life than strength. I hope it doesn’t take you too long to learn that”.
- Ip Man
When Master Cheung Tin-chi smashes down the sign and finally accepts Ip Man as his superior it really shows how he was a good an honest character in the end, and his moral values and righteous heart prevailed despite his past actions, it really shows him as more than a 2 dimensional antagonist
I guess this goes to show that as soon as Cheung Tin-Chi was defeated, he learns from it and as time passes, he becomes a good fighter once he commits to fighting with honor. I mean both of these 2 men went their separate ways after the movie Ip Man 3. While Ip Man went to San Francisco to deal with Chinese discrimination, Cheung Tin-chi was dealing with Batista. We can say Master Cheung Tin-Chi did become a better martial artist after being defeated by Ip Man. So as soon as Cheung Tin-Chi learns to defend against injustice, he eventually beats Batista in a fight. Mike Tyson on the other hand was nowhere receiving injuries from Ip Man. Mike Tyson only accepted defeat due to a timer and he did come close to beating Ip Man at a faster time. So that should mean if Cheung Tin-Chi can beat Batista, then Mike Tyson should be able to do it too.
The winner here is the sound engineer!!!

The most balanced and cool fight entire of the series.
Don’t forget the table fight in ip2
That and bruce lee vs karate guy in alley in 4 lol
@@zensek yep, that's so damn cool tho. table fight
4:23 Imagine if that kick landed
Owwwwwwwwww

His balls would be gone
No kids then
when the staffs break, if u look closely u can see that ip man's staff is a little longer than the other guy's stick. Helps show that he surpasses him but only by a small margin
It proves nothing imo
ImTruthia it actually prove a lot. In martial art, there is an idea that the longer your weapon, the more reach and a better advantage you will have. So Ip Man has a longer stick after they broke off, it means that if they were to continue fighting with the stick, Ip Man would win. Same with the knife, Ip Man still has the weapon at the end while the opponent is disarmed, another with for Ip Man. Then the hand to hand is obviously another win for Ip Man. So literally, Ip Man has beat the other guy 3 times during this entire scene. And they knew it too, since when the guy lost the previous 2 fights, he switched to fists, which cause Ip Man to throw away his knife and “let” him fight again for another round. Else he would have already won 2 out of 3 rounds.
ImTruthia it’s not literal proof, it’s symbolism
Lol
Staffs never break the same size you dorks, trying to see things that are not there
05:57 look at how ip man first blocks him... Then touches his side to feel how far he has to punch... It's such a cool detail, because he can't see so uses a fast little tap to know where he has to land that hit
agreed
3:58 uu can clearly see that IP Man was always waiting for that moment of "no weapon and shiiit boy, time to kick yo ass now" 😂😂😂 he just doesn't like using weapons unless he gotz to!
He starts going crazy on him he attacks like twice as much just to beat his ass

This is one of the best choreographed fights on film I've ever seen. In fact this whole film was incredibly filmed so damn well. I've seen thousands upon thousands of Kung Fu movies, other kinds of action films with fights in them yet this film is superior to just about anyone I've seen in regards to the fighting sequences. The camera work, it's positioning, the angles the lighting, the speed used, the music just all of it is absolutely perfection. In my opinion this film can be used as a case study for those studying to become film directors especially in the action/martial arts genre. I honestly was kind of taken aback on how good this movie was formulated as a whole. Very very good. I know I sound like a fan boy but damn it was impressive as hell. Anyone else feel even remotely as I do?
This comment right here! I literally just said the same thing on Twitter just now after watching this clip again 💯🔥
It's my favorite in the franchise, and one of my all time top 10 best martial arts films. The action is just phenomenally well done.
Agreed! And i love how they ended the fight with a blinded one inch punch ! That was a beautiful finish!
My fave Ip Man closing fight because it’s the only one where his opponent is a fellow Wing Chun practitioner. The choreography in the hand-to-hand section is beautiful.
I love the final bit, keeping just out of range of the chain punches, then finishing the fight with a 1 inch punch, beautiful
I love how it only takes a bigger and muscular man to make Ip Man injured. When he fights a man his size, he's barely injured, no matter how much skilled that man is, like General Miura and this.
Twister, Frank and Scott Adkins were his toughest combatants.
It's simple physics :)
@@jrewing1512 Agreed. But imo Frank is the toughest. He's freakin' Mike Tyson xD. One punch = alot of damage.
@@TheFikri136 Yeah. Though this is a movie. Non of the fights actually happen.
JR Ewing REALLY? I thought real Ip Man actually fought Tyson and Scott Adkins!
My fucking God.
This is the first Martial arts movie i cried watching! Ip man's wife is a bad ass ! Could care less if her accepting this challenge is historically accurate they both genuinely had cancer . " It's not always about strength " a battle field covers a wide range of plains !
ending of ip man 4 is sum else
The best thing about this film is that they don't use super-shaky cameras like in all motion pictures we saw. The scene speaks for you without using deadpan dialogues whatsoever. It shows you what they are doing. Right here, right now.
Yes indeed you made an excellent observation. This choice of camera work style is so perfect for this fighting scene. It's as if we're up in the sequence like some kind of floating apparition.
This fight isn't just physical, this is a hurt and saddened IP Man who has understood the importance of his loved one.
The speed, cinematography, music and just the spectacle of this entire basically makes me blind to the improper technique and historical inaccuracy. Great fight scene, and film in general.
0:20 when you and your friend successfully stack sharpie markers together in class

Best and most impressive fight scene from ALL the Ip Man films imo. Best movie in franchise.
Probably my favourite fight seen in any film, Donnie Yen is amazing, the choreography in this film and other Ip Man films was off the charts..
5:55 Ultra Instinct Moment.
This fight is choreographed to a mastery and up man with the double one inch punch. The other master was feeling pain that he never felt before, enough to make him submit to every fight to Ip man. This is so intelligent Bc Ip man did not want the fight, so he ended it to end future fights. 9000 IQ plays
One of the worthy opponents and legendary battles
05:58. Now you know where Bruce Lee learned is 1inch punch
I thought they made him end this scene with the "signiture"move of bruce lee to again make clear that they have already trained together, since there was this quote in wich he asked bruce if he could show him some moves "in return". Or at least i remember something like that.
@@Prowler- The whole series of fiction lol. Real ip man did none of these things. (he still is a badass I bet though)
@@purefatdude2 Where did i even said something about real life? I meant in the plot of the movie. :D

Most technical yes. Most impactful as far as emotions was the 10 black belts scene for me. There was a lot more on the line and IP man came out of character and went full rage because of his pain. IP man 4 definitely didnt reach this amount of skill.

I got master z ip man legacy is that a good one haven't watched it yet
Such focus, concentration and skill. I love it.
Their clothes here also represent the Yin and Yang. if you think about it. Ip Man wearing white, and Cheung Tin-Chi wearing black, respectively, shows how their skills are displayed. Ip man is calm, focused, precise, and relaxed, while Cheung Tin-Chi is brutal, blunt, and lethal. However, this can be debatable as Ip man displays aggressive Wing Chun moves when triggered.
When you and the other person has a crush on the same girl

6:00 that is what we call an OP move!!!
Ip was totally fine with the fight. From the staffs to the daggers and to the hand to hand combat. But the moment his opponent tried to do something sly like targeting their eye or just doing cheap shots. That's when IP man just ended it. He was disappointed and didn't want to fight anymore. He already proved it with the 1 inch punch then just stared down at him and walked away. There are good sportsmanship and there are bad ones in fights to prove yourself better.
But he did the same thing with Tyson. He didnt hit him, but he tried to hit the eye
3 inch bro
@@miguelvargas6931 Its different.Wing Chun is kinda woman's martial arts style for less powerful woman to fight man and that's why you can see there are many "dickmoves" through Ip Man fighting to Tyson like attacking his eye and dick. That's how "Wing Chun" fight to the stronger one. Also, there are no limitations and rules when Ip Man fighting to Tyson. All he need to do is to survive in few minutes. But fighting to Max Zhang is totally different thing, Ip Man take that as a fighting exercise between brothers who both learn the same Kung Fu so he won't use cheap shot or dickmoves to hurt Max Zhang . And Max Zhang used it because he really wants to win Ip Man.
Fundamental part of Wing Chun is to target sensitive areas. The groin and eyes are hot spots in the true martial art. In the fourth one he even uses an eye gouge in his final fight. Admittedly, he was a cancer ridden kung fu master with one injured arm, but he DID use an eye gouge. *Edit* He also did at least two crotch shots, and a trachea shot. Again, crippled and cancer ridden tho.

Is it me or does the hand to hand fight look a lot like Naruto's ty jutsu fight with Momoshiki?
The person who choreographed that fight took heavy inspiration from real martial arts style including this one wing chun, I forget though if actually inspired by this movie(s)
I *think* this was the film where both Ip Chun and Ip Ching (Ip Man 's sons) were Wing Chun advisors
This entire 3rd movie was Ip not wanting to fight and then reluctantly he had to fight. And Ip fought only to protect and defend. He hates hurting people. Ip just wanted to spend time with his family.
Ip would've beateb that dude from the start but Ip was holding back the entire time. The other dude used a dirty trick move on Ip at the end and then Ip realized it was time to end that sparring match. Ip's punches at the beginning was never meant to hit. It was the last punch that all Ip needed. Ip always holds back until HE'S FORCED TO REALLY FIGHT... SURVIVAL MODE KICKS IN.
Ip destroyed 10 guys (black belts) in the first movie. That was him with NO RESTRAINT. HE JUST WANTED TO HURT PEOPLE, which is something he doesn't like doing.
Real martial arts is all about restraint and real discipline.
Ip's only real 2 competition that were a threat throughout this 4 film series was Twister and the Mike Tyson character. Two boxers = Blunt Force Trauma to the head.
masterpiece.
